Feeling as though you have bugs or parasites under your skin is one of the most common delusions, called delusional parasitosis. It's often seen in drug users. My university's entomology department used to have their phones open to the public so people could call and get bugs identified by description. The head of the department said that a huge amount of the calls were drug users experiencing delusional parasitosis, desperately trying to identify the "parasite" and ask for ways to treat it. Edit: The people in this home have delusional parasitosis, not Morgellons. No one has Morgellons. Morgellons is an illness that people claim is caused by ACTUAL fibers under their skin. All studies have shown that everyone experiencing so called "Morgellons" are actually experiencing delusions or some other form of mental/physical illness. No one with "Morgellons" has ever been found to have fibers or parasites in their skin.

This is soooo nit picky but I’m an asshole so I just want to point out that sometimes people do pull fibers from their wounds, but when tested it comes from their clothes and most likely got in those wounds from the person who is suffering delusional parisitosis picking into their skin. The only reason I brought it up is because I *just* watched a documentary on this and it was so well done! It followed this woman who for sure was pulling these red fibers out of her skin and it was set up to zig you one way, to think “shit maybe it is real” to ZAG immediately and be like “look at her sweater” let me try to find it because it was SO GOOD

They sometimes have Cotten or wool fibers, but this is delusional parasitosis, with this specific type affecting those who are suffering a psychological break or use heavy mind altering drugs like Datura. I urge you to do some more searching and find some of these videos supposedly showing the fibers they can totally see, but no one else, not even their unbiased audience,can see.

Last month, there was an incident where my mom, while talking on the phone, suddenly rushed to the hospital. She explained that her aunt had mistakenly fed my uncle Datura by stir frying it. It seems that her aunt had heard from someone that consuming Datura might help with his health complications, so she decided to stir fry it to make it easier to consume with rice. Shortly after consuming it, my uncle started vomiting, coughing up blood, and then fainted. He was immediately taken to the hospital as his pulse rate was rapidly dropping. Thankfully, he received timely treatment and his life was saved. Datura is commonly found in grassy fields, bushes, and footpaths throughout my country as it is a wild plant. Despite its medicinal properties, it is often overlooked and mistaken for regular grass or a wild plant, so consuming it is not considered. There are many old wives' tales about its dangerous effects if consumed.

There’s a pretty good movie out there called Bug (2006) starring Ashley Judd and Michael Shannon that is about this phenom. Also, the IRL case of someone referred to as the Vampire Kelly (NSFL rabbit hole warning if you look it up). In the past few years there have been a rise in bird mite infestations which can drive people crazy with itching and the skin-crawling feeling when their eggs hatch in the skin. They are incredibly tiny but impactful and very hard to eradicate once infested. People have torn their skin to shreds from the itch and been misdiagnosed with psych disorders as a result. It’s all a complex grab bag of issues for sure.

I had the sensation of bugs crawling under my skin when my liver wa inflamed, I couldn't sleep because it was so bad. I stopped drinking and I stopped taking medications like the ADHD meds I was prescribed and it went away. It came back almost instantly when I took meds again. Stopped and it stopped, Willing to bet a lot of people who experience this have a liver that's struggling, seems to be common with addiction right?

Most of these can be described as mental illness amplified by drug abuse some it is just mental illness and needing a shower I remember when I was in middle school walking with some friends near a strip mall going to get burgers from the DQ when a strange man said help it is under my skin the friend who had a cellphone called 911 and started recording after giving the nearest address a used furniture store we thought that he was stabbed or something because of blood no dude was mentally ill, had 3 different drugs on him, and freaked out more when both the cops and ambulance arrived and we saw him digging at his skin all the way until he was handcuffed to the strecher

I would imagine those with this neurotic disorder also have other conspiracy notions that shape their perceptions of life as well. We all have our own scope of what we believe to be real and not real by what it is we are around or associating with. It is human nature to understand our world by the limited environments we choose to experience or had believed were the only experiences we could have. With the introduction of the internet, there is now more information, true and false alike, that travel at the speed of waves to our devices. Radio did this, television did this, but now the internet is giving everyone an overload of information to such an extent that there are many who cannot discern what is real information vs entertainment or delusions. Have this plus drugs plus others who delve into theories or otherwise of certain values? This is what may end up happening. There is many things ‘bugging’ us, but it’s not the government’s fault. It’s our own dang minds, environmental stimuli and choice of recognition. Behold, we are all mad here.

My Mother is 67, and She has believed she has bugs for about 3 years now. She takes hour long showers, and bleaches stuff in her house over and over. My mom was always very smart and independent. It breaks my heart to know my Mom is gonna spend her last days on earth miserable thinking she has bugs. I even bought a microscope so i can show her that her " bugs" are nothing more than dirt or scabs or just trash in general. That did not work though.
