not really. an abridged series revolves around change, and while i can't be certain what the original lines were, yu-gi-oh is at it's heart a comedic series (and also a horror series, but there's no reason those two aspects can't coexist) so at the end of the day, this isn't the dub being weird, this is yu-gi-oh being weird, because yu-gi-oh is weird. though this does not at all apply to some of the 4kids lines, especially during season 3 of gx where they genuinely just stopped caring. but even when they did care, they made a lot of nonsense decisions.

While there are issues with some of the 4Kids productions, the early dubs are glorious examples of figuring out how to work around censorship and cultural differences to create something brilliant. Some of the most amazing one-liners and quotable lines were invented whole-cloth for the dubs of Pokemon and Yugioh and came back around to influence even the Japanese interpretation of the characters.

I found Kaiba so funny that I characterize Noah as 'Kaiba with a negative filter'. Highlights include: He points out how Kaiba would react to the magic stuff in Macbeth down to imitating his voice while Kaiba is in the room and increasingly pissed off when he won't shut up.
