Visited Croatian part of Yugoslavia back in '83. Absolutely beautiful area and people were awesome. They played the song "Džuli" everywhere as it had done well in the Eurovision that year. I turned 14 during the trip and even got drunk once, they would sell me alcohol probably because I was quite tall. Now, the weird thing was a little later back in Finland I saw a dream, that I was visiting the same places again, but they were devastated by war and the dream had a very dark tone. This was long before the wars started, and to what I know those areas I visited weren't touched by the conflict. I don't necessarily believe in premonitions, but certainly it was a weird dream to have.

Hey I lived in Yugoslavia for 20 years 7 in Spain and 25 in USA. Yugoslavia was the best country with less laws and more freedom than USA. We had free Medicare free Dental and free universities. Very few people had a loan on their homes that were mostly owned by people or state and we had no property taxes. People were pretty relaxed. Btw that guy was not homeless we didn’t have any homeless even the very poor had a roof over their had. You just had a freedom to sleep anywhere and police would even ask you any questions I did it at 17 on Croatian coast. The best system and country ever. Even though I am pretty successful here everything is not about the money but if you are born in the USA you probably can’t comprehend that.

Yugoslavia had/has the BEST music scene in the world. When I heard "Selma" from Bijelo Dugme, I knew that I had to learn the language. I have seen several Ex-Yugo concerts: Zdravko Čolić, Lepa Brena, Van Goh, Riblja Čorba, Bajaga, Bebek, Bijelo Dugme, and Crvena Jabuka to name a few. I was fortunate to meet Žera when he was in Chicago. He was so sweet. And I also got to meet Samir and Admir Ćeremida when I was in Sarjaveo. I stopped by their kafana Havana. I had quite the fan girl moment. The singers from Ex Yugo sing with their souls. The songs really touch the heart. I would love to return to the region. I felt so much at home.

Yugoslavia in this period looked great, but it had horrible hyperinflation and dysfunction. The break-up didn't come from utopia. In 1990 the economy went to hell. And there was already fractures in the state and the army with fractionalism and corruption.
@PolitikaPolitika-ws9mk2 ай бұрын
Sadly yes, corrupted officials started to take over after Tito died in 1980s (because he didn't actually had an heir - sounds funny but he didn't imagine that his legacy would require another Tito to continue to exist...) he was always saying "Look after the brotherhood and unity when I'm gone" but people started to immerse in nationalism and some foreign powers started to interfere in the domestic politics. Some of the officials still managed to resist the influence and hold to neutrality of the Yugoslavia, when those foreign powers understood that Yugoslavia like that would never be politically or economically enslaved by those like them... they started the nationalism propaganda and the rest is history. The war was artificially created. People didn't know what they were fighting for... It was sad. I remember that my grandfather who passed away recently said "Yugoslavia was a haven on earth. You could have everything, you could rise a family, live decent, work honestly and watch your children grow healthy and safe." That was Yugoslavia.
@samuelsquires423Ай бұрын
Yes, but it was cheered along by the west too. Very sad. It wasn't just torn apart by token cartoon-evil Serbs. It's extremely complicated, but yeah the catalyst is money. The reborn Tito needed to be found. The racists sent back to the Island gulag. My wife is a Bosnian, Hungarian, Bunjevci, very Serbian non-Serb from Serbia and her parents said it was fantastic, the sucked, and friends and family were running coke with courier pigeons and alcohol in petrol tanks. So while it didn't happen suddenly, luckily tvey were all Yugo as fuck and biologically ready for chaos. My comment has no point, but gday, how's it going. Love that place, closest thing to Australia I could find in Europe ❤

@@PolitikaPolitika-ws9mk bravo for this, CRUCIAL sentence: "and some foreign powers started to interfere in the domestic politics". THERE ARE ONLY ONE GROUP OF MONSTERS THAT ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR 99% OF ALL WARS AND EVIL ON THIS PLANET. THEY RULE OVER THE GOVERNMENTS IN UK, USA, SWITZERLAND, ITALY, AND SO ON. THEY ARE A FASCIST GROUP OF NO - EMPATHY PEOPLE, AND THEY WANTED TO DESTROY US AND OCUUPY, LIKE THEY ARE DOING NOW. EU, NATO, UN, WHO, WEF - IT IS ALL THEIR SCUMBAG OPERATIONS. If you were single and had a job, then you've got single room,,,,,after that you've got married, you went in like and got two room apartment,,,,,, when kids came, you've got bigger flat. .... That was Tito's Yugoslavia, too.

In honor of all the wailing, illiterate, nobodies in the comment section, I will leave a short summary of Yugoslavia's economic realities. In 1991 - Yugoslavia's worst year, she ranked as the world's 24th economy, and was ahead of Austria, South Africa, Indonesia, Argentina, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Romania, and Norway, with a debt-to-GDP set to 18 million billion (15% of the GDP, the source is CIA's Factbook), and this is during IMF's "restructuring" that had gutted the industries, the public sector, and the agriculture. Furthermore, Yugoslavia was offered IMMEDIATE* entry into the EEC in late 1990, all member-states, barring Germany, were in favor. Months later, Germany proceeded to unilaterally (act of aggression in all but name) recognize and support the illegal secessions of Slovenia and Croatia, therefore starting the Yugoslav Wars, the rest is history. In summary, a powerful, developed economy: "Mutual interactions between the two sides intensified in the late 1980s and early 1990s but all progress was cut off as of 25 November 1991 due to the wars in Slovenia and Croatia. Before the cut-off, Yugoslavia was the EEC's second largest trade partner in the Mediterranean area, just after Algeria, with 90% of industrial imports from Yugoslavia to the EEC not subject to any duty. Unfortunately for all the liberals and the deranged nationalists, the country was destroyed by the rising Unipolar West and Russia because it refused to surrender its geopolitical, cultural, media, and economic sovereignty, and not because of "inflation", and other made-up reasons that you regurgitate 24/7.

I was born in Bosnia-Herzegovina, then Yugoslavia (1969) and it was a crappy one party country (the only political party was the Communist Party) and a crappy standard of living. And if I felt that way, even we were among the better standing families because my father was the owner of a private bakery and I was the only child (we were a family of three), then imagine these families where 4-5 people lived of workers salaries which were 50-100 euros (monthly!) , pensions were miserable, there was huge unemployment, eternal inflation, shortages of various things such as coffee, detergent, gasoline, even f**** bananas, then worthless currency (dinar), and newly married couples in 99% in many cases lived together with their parents, often 5-6 people each in a two-room apartment of 50-60 square meters. *THATS the REAL Yugoslavia they didn't show you!* p.s. you can tell and sell your cheap crap about Yugoslavia to someone who doesn't know the facts. .
