"Are you going to win?" the journalist asked the rebel.
"We don't deserve to lose," the rebel answered.
That was the first exchange journalist Gaspar Morquecho recalls having with the revolutionary Subcomandante Marcos on January 1, 1994, in the central plaza of San Cristobal del las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico. Morquecho, feeling a mixture of still drunk and hungover from the New Year's celebrations the night before, interviewed the Zapatista leader minutes after he and his comrades had stormed and taken over the municipal hall of San Cristobal.
Twenty years after the Zapatista uprising, VICE traveled to Chiapas to meet Morquecho, the first local journalist to speak with the Zapatista Army face-to-face, so he could recall the events of that fateful day-it was the first indigenous armed uprising in Latin America in the internet age.
In 1993, Mexico's then-president Carlos Salinas de Gortari signed the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with the presidents of the United States and Canada. NAFTA was meant to establish a globalized tri-national economic front, and it went into effect January 1, 1994.
That same morning, as a direct response to the neoliberal policies that were gradually taking hold in Mexico, thousands of indigenous fighters emerged from the rain forests of the Altos region of Chiapas, in southern Mexico, with the intention to take seven municipalities, including San Cristobal. The group called itself the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN).
On January 1, without warning, the EZLN released the Declaration of the Lacandona Jungle, in which the armed group declared war on the Mexican government, and demanded "jobs, land, housing, food, health, education, independence, freedom, democracy, justice, and peace."
From that moment on, and during the 12 days that followed, the war between the EZLN and the Mexican Army gripped several towns and villages in Chiapas, resulting in more than 100 casualities and a still-disputed number of disappeared people. What also remains in dispute is the legacy, the impact, and the strength of the EZLN in Mexico today.

Its funny when people act like the Mayans disappeared suddenly and its a big mystery what happened to them. I studied in Southern Mexico while in college and traveled around the Yucatan peninsula and Chiapas. The Mayan community is still very strong and the Mayan language is spoken more than Spanish in some areas. They fought the Spanish for hundreds of years and later the Mexican state. The Zapatistas are STILL fighting the same fight that their ancestors did. The Mayans never vanished. They abandoned their ancient cities to fight a guerrilla war from the caves and jungles. And they have been doing so for half a millennia. They outlasted the Spanish Empire and have even managed to carve out what is effectively an independent state in Chiapas.

Of course, and you are made of false patritism with false victories causing wars just to raise your currency and economy. What are you going to sleep in other countries tell me if ezln comes to power and removes the government who will be next? Mexico is a country oppressed by others mainly us look at the mexican revolution as they were really interested in usa and germany look at the free trade agreement do not you think mexico is losing? look at the drug trade only exists because you are a lot of drug addicts and to top it off they sell me arms believe me I am looking forward to the day that the ezln takes power after the corrupt government you follow and not inbecil in that movement there are not only indigenous people there are all kinds of people even mark their boss is not indigenous and all Mexicans are the same as them if you already forgot we are not white we are brown we do not look Spanish so stop saying stupid things you only have balls to terrorize countries and exterminate almost completely Native American population we belong more to this continent than you.

Emiliano Zapata was one of the leaders of the Mexican Revolution, which began in 1910 in Mexico. He fought against wealthy landowners who had usurped land from peasants. His aim was to get the land back to these poor farmers. The motto adopted by him was “Land and Liberty”.

It was an opportunity to explain WHY the Zapatecas assembled and became the Zapatistas, fighting for land rights. It was an opportunity to show the absolute electricity that is the artistic and wild current that runs through San Cristobol. Sorry but not a very good documentary. I learned nothing about the Zapatistas and who they are or why they chose to rise up, what elements of society make up these groups, nothing. All I learned was that there is a group called the Zapatistas who rose up about 20 years ago in Mexico. By way of explanation as to what caused them to take up arms, all I got was literally a laundry list of vague concepts so general that they can be applied to damn near every uprising that ever happened ever. Concepts like "exploitation," "liberation," and "justice". Zero specifics. And then we learned that the PRI led government committed treachery against the Zapatistas in the peace accords, and yet again, no specifics. What did the Mexican government do? How did they betray the rebels? Did they betray the Zapatistas by getting them to think that they were getting a better deal than was actually case, or did they betray them by violating the terms of the peace accord after it had been signed? And what about the government's perspective? Would they characterize what transpired as a betrayal? Again, we don't know, because the documentary doesn't delve any further into the matter. All we get is a snippet of a guy saying that treachery had occurred, with zero context, zero exposition or investigation of surrounding facts and events, nothing. Nada. So I come away from this documentary knowing nothing more about the Zapatistas or their rebellion than I did before watching it.

There's talks of rovolucion in Michoacan, Sinaloa and other nothern states in Mexico. I would GLADLY die for my country and join to at least get rid of the cartels. Corruption will always be a problem as long as people gets in power. This is not just the case of Mexico, corruption exists in every country. Viva la Revolucion!

Kinda off topic but, ....the problem lies on the U.S.A. NOT the cartels. U.S.A needs to change political and law aspects on how to restrict drug usage. Many think that by making things illegal (for example alcohol prohibition), we completely eliminate the problem, and that is not the case. We just end up brushing it under the rug. If we have a tighter law policies, restricting usage to minors and making sure we fine people using inadequately, or even abusing while at work or what have you, or taxing really high, the gov benefits from this. Fighting an addiction we have funding to take care of the addict from his own usage. We just need to end this war against drugs.

000CLos problem lies in mexico too. When you have a government is willing to defend the criminals and kill unarmed citizens before doing their job you can't blame the drug usage in the USA. First fix corruption, then rid the country of the remaining filth.

I really appreciate that this documentary was made interviewing Mexicans and not just by another foreign historian. I feel that is also a sign of oppression, to take the voice of the people to give it one, kind of paradox. So thanks Vice, very eye opening and appeciated. Viva Mexico!

Excellent proposal, nevertheless it lacks a lot of perspective and information. El Subcomandante Marcos is an incredibly important character in this story. The ideals he portrays and represent are important for a lot of mexicans. I hope you could do another news edition with his story and the story of this movement which means a lot to what is happening these days in our country.

Some of the subtitles had errors in them (it’s spelled Ocosingo, not Ocozingo). Makes some interesting points, but I would have liked to hear more of the voices of the Mayan people of the region, rather than second hand accounts from local reporters (who did not seem to come from the communities where the uprisings began)
