I saw this film yesterday, and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. It may be the first movie I've seen where the Nazis are portrayed as "real" people, not as stereotypes or caricatures which makes it all the more unsettling. You cannot see what is happening behind the wall but you can feel it through the characters and and the symbolism. Brilliant piece of cinema!

It is only in theaters at the moment. I watched it today and it was an outstanding movie. Worth it to go see in theaters uninterrupted and totally immersed. That’s a really good point though I think Schindler’s List and The Pianist also showed the Nazis as real people, at least Pianist did when that Nazi commandant showed him mercy when he was discovered. What I loved about Zone of Interest is the duality of man: Rudolph Hoss would spend the day time executing Jews and issuing stern orders and by afternoon, he was eating dinner with his families and reading bedtime stories to his kids. He was an evil commandant but an excellent father. And I think that’s the major theme that Zone of Interest was trying to portray. People can be both evil in one light and terrific in another. Rudolph Hoss will go down in history as an evil human being; fatherhood does not improve his image in any way. What’s so scary about Rudolph Hoss is the human psychology and how this behavior is still relevant today. Nobody is totally one-dimensional. A person can do evil one day and lots of good the next.

@@thanksyoutubefortakingmyhandle From Glazer? I love both Sexy Beast and Birth, they're very different films from each other and what Glazer has done since then. Sexy Beast is a great gangster film where Glazer's background as a music video director shines thru with great use of music and rhythmic editing and Birth is, well... it's an interesting twist on a "undying love" story, I wasn't first sure if I could relate to it due to its subject matter but when the end credits were rolling I felt like I had been punched in the gut, in a good way that only a great film can hurt you.

This film is scary as hell and unfortunately, very timely. I don't know how people who can commit heinous acts like these are able to sleep at night, or even look at themselves in the mirror. Compassion and empathy are human characteristics, yet so many are utterly devoid of it.

Yes, empathy is inside our dna, but not necessarily in the way you think. For most of evolution, our brains were practically hardwired to care for and empathize for people in our tribe.
@user-sn5nh7md5o

Compassion and empathy are not, we're still animals. We're taught that as children by those that love as. Look how palistinian children are taught to hate Jews, Christians, and other non-believers, even using Disneyesque characters to do so. Watch the interviews of kids and pre teens of what they want to do when they grow up. The attack on 10-7 on makes more sense. "Bring terror and death to the unbeliever, even unto their women and children". If you believe those are the words of God, what do you expect to happen. Also reference the elementary school attack at Beslam, Russia Sept 1-4, 2004. Normal humans do not do those things to children. unless it's what your taught to do.

Trailers should be like this, showing just a glimpse of what the story is about without giving away too much. [EDIT: The trailer is actually like this because the movie has no pilot at all 😂 A little disappointing tbh...] The industry is so desperate to make people go to the theaters that show basically every key scenes in the trailers destroying the experience of watching for the first time.

You had me at "Jonathan Glazer." Birth is severely underrated. There's an intimacy in the close-ups of Nicole Kidman that approaches Maria Falconetti, and The soundtrack and cinematography give off vibes I can't quite describe. The movie is simultaneously tumultous and warm; cozy, almost Christmas-y. Then there's Under The Skin, which feels so perfectly alien and intimate in a way we rarely see in science fiction. Funnily enough, Sexy Beast is the movie I am least familiar with, despite having the highest critics scores among the three listed here. I watched it once and was probably distracted.

Under the Skin is the best of those three, in my opinion. It's a flat-out masterpiece that explores the nature of empathy in much the same way The Zone of Interest seems to. I think a lot of people simply didn't understand it. I'm always surprised when I see the critics scores. I think it was a case of misplaced expectations. Glazer doesn't make many movies, but the ones he does make are profound and get at the most important issues of human psychology.

There's a visual effect implemented in at least a couple sequences that was awe-inspiring. The music was instrumental, no pun intended. Beautiful scenery, ironically. Kubric-esque cinematography. Haunting. Doesn't have to spell it out for you. The tone hit its target.

I watched this with headphones. Definitely the way to watch. At some point in the movie, my brain just became exhausted with the constant cacophony of the camp. At some point I wanted to take the headset off just to make it stop. I figured that was the directors desired effect, so I left them on. I can almost see how a person could get used to living outside those walls. At some point the brain would have to try and filter it out in order for some relief. I thought the mother expressed this contrast wonderfully.

The Studio A30 treatment is evident in the surreal effects that pass through the film like shadows. The industrial/human sound of groaning and the scene with Hoss descending the staircase near the end of the film. The metaphysical ingredient adds to the horror of the reality. Hoss got his after all was said and done. The Soviet war crimes courts were far more severe than Nueremberg. And rightly so.
