The 3M 2800 filters have been my go to for years, and I love the idea of using them in a HEPA filter configuration. As someone who bought a IQAir last year, I have been disappointed in it. It filters great, but the bearings in the fan have started to go. I am dreading having to send it back. Tangentially related, but have you considered looking into DIY approaches on the dust separation side of things? One of the projects I have on the backburner is reverse engineering the Harvey G700 cyclonic dust separator - using a dust collector fan, short lengths of 8 inch PVC pipe from Amazon, and 3D printed adapters, fittings, and fins to replicate the functionality of a $2500 machine. @@The3DHandyman Yeah, not a problem. And I do have a few q's. I'm curious about the footprint and throughput of the Model E and that smaller inline Model B-ish version with the 30x14 filters. I've got a under utilized 20x20x40 corner that perfect for such a beast. I'm guessing that info is incoming in a future video. Also, have you tested filtering any harsh 3D printing filaments through the carbon filters with good results?
@The3DHandyman8 ай бұрын
The footprint of the Model-B is about 3 inches wider than the filter, so the 14" filter model would be about a 17" square. I'll need to add dimensions to the listings. Forgot about doing that again, haha. The smallest Model-E is an 18" wide, but because it is circular you can turn it to vacuum it and it wont get any wider than 18". The 14" B will be 24" diagonally, so if you want to put a prefilter on it and vacuum it, it takes up a lot more space if you need to turn it. I will be doing some resin printing tests when I get a chance. So far, all I have tested the carbon filter with is FDM printing. I suspect it will work well but I don't know about the longevity of the carbon when I hit it with that resin stink. Hopefully that video will be out in about 2 months or so 🤞 Thanks for all the comments, Albert!

Awesome design work, and love the level of detail you've put into the testing. I've been holding off on building one of these due to space constraints in my garage shop, but that will be changing soon, so I am super excited to see that you've continued improving these designs. My current setup (shop-vac with cyclone for most tools, dust extractor for sanding, and ceiling mounted air filter) does an okay job...but there's still TONS of fine dust everywhere the next day when it all settles out of the air. Definitely think the Cat drum fan kit is going to be on my shop upgrade list here really soon, unless of course the testing on the canister filters pushes things in that direction.
@The3DHandyman8 ай бұрын
Thank you! I will get into the same level of detail with the canister filters designs. Spoiler alert... I like canisters for ducted filtration much better than Axial fans. Axial fans and large disposable filters are a much better combination. If you cant go with a ducted design, the Cat fan and some 20x30in filters are the most efficient option by far.

Man, I can't wait to see the results of the cartridge filter test. I purchased one of the Cat fans for the powder coating spray booth I'm building based on your recommendation and it'll be pulling through some similar cartridge filters. I _should_ be using an industrial tube axial fan but the Cat is a far cry from the $1500 alternative. Even running three Cat's will be significantly cheaper. Hope it'll do the job.

Spray booths are a challenging build! They have a lot of needs. I did have success with the cartridge filters and the CAT fan in the upwards "pull config" more so than the downwards "push config". That said, I had even more success with the 12" inline fan that handles static pressure better. Also, ducted filtration rocks. It's a bit like a budget downdraft paint booth. I'll cover all the details on the cartridge filters in the upcoming video and I already have a video out on ducted filtration if you haven't seen that one yet. Thanks for the comment!

Great video. The battle with dust is a constant struggle in my shop. I have a couple different DIY filters in the shop now; always looking to improve the efficiency and ease of maintenance. I’m looking forward to seeing your plans for woodworkers to use. I appreciate the information on the impact of air turbulence in the shop. It is a good time (weather and shop temperature) to turn off my fan to test whether it has been hindering or helping the dust control effort.

Thanks! I hope to have the plans available on my website by this weekend.

I made one of these with a standard box 20" fan and a high-flow 20x20 HEPA filter strapped to it. The fan motor wasn't meant for that kind of static pressure and you could smell the motor getting hotter than it was designed to. I checked the temperature with an IR meter and it was fine, but you definitely need two or more filters to not overwhelm a cheap fan with air resistance.

This is an impressive amount of designing and testing, thank you. Although I am getting a bit confused as to which would be applicable for a residential / bedroom situation, given that you discuss industrial situations throughout the video. Could anyone that has a bit of a better overview indicate to me which kit would be best for smaller residential rooms? Thanks in advance!

There are so many KZbin videos on this topic that facts become almost impossible to discern. Your approach is helpful in this regard. Even so, I find that the curtness of your statements leans into the staccato realm. Being a person who likes to mentally walk through important decisions, more information in a readily attainable format would be greatly appreciated. Do not take my comments as negative...they are just how I process things. Your testing and recommendations are extremely helpful and build confidence in the solutions you promote. I hope you keep up the good work that you are doing and continue to inform about your results. It is great that you are also offering free plans as well as kits and parts for sale. Thanks.

Fair enough. I think I went through 3 different scripts for this video before I ended up with this one and I still ended up cutting in a few random things that felt were left out. Those cuts can fee a bit abrupt at times. It's also a challenge deciding what to say without saying too much or too little. It's my nature to want to say every last thing about the topic but if it's a comparison video at the same time it could end up being an hour long and the average viewer attention span is about 6 minutes. I'll be covering some concepts in single topic videos where I hope to be a bit more through. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Just working on my air filtration needs and had a product design thought for you...a flanged, bell-shaped inlet extension, for your favorite AC fan. Keep the fan blowing into the box, and mount the extension on/over the grill. Like a mini-CAT.

Wow, all-around awesome job on the data the designs the video, all of it. Thank you!

Seems like there should be a bigger version of that AC infinity cloudline fan, or a quiet drum fan.

I've been struggling with sinus problems for years, mouth breathing and snoring at night, not being able to get good rest. I feel like HEPA filters help me out, but these designs seem even better! I'll make sure to try something like you've shown out, thanks a ton for sharing all that knowledge in such high quality mate! Keep up the good work, well done!

I made the cat fan filter for my garage wood shop and it works wonders. Don’t even need the when air filters on the ceiling.

Great video and very well presented! What I found is that I still try to ventilate as much as possible to the outside, if that's an option. Other than that I didn't have amazing results with auto mode air cleaners (sensor based) and I do believe this design is really nice. A timer would be a great addition, so that you could leave it running for an hour or two while leaving the shop / place with dust buildup? As you said the right scaling is another great way - having the option to just leave it running on low and only cranking it up on demand for example. The solution with the aluminium profiles also is really nice. And it will very likely fix many of the issues with wood. That said the only sad part is that shipping to the EU basically basically costs as much as the whole kit itself. 😅
@The3DHandyman8 ай бұрын
I hear you on that. Shipping to Canada is ridiculously expensive as well, no need to cross an ocean and it still 160USD. I also like the sensor based controls. Will have to put that on the schedule. Thanks for the comment!

I have a fairly large shop space at 26'x40', with 12' ceilings, housing a wood shop, fabrication space and automotive shop. Currently, I'm in the process of redesigning the space to actually be somewhat functional versus the hodgepodge it currently is, and I'm considering a built-in filtration/circulation system. I have to say, I appreciate some of the math you've included here, because I was unsure of how many filters I would actually need! I plan on having a separate dust collection system for the woodworking side of things; this setup would just be for general air quality. I think two ~1000cfm inline fans in a duct, with the inlet filters at one end of the shop, and the outlet dispersed and directionally vented at the opposite end, may work. That should be able to cycle all the air in

I look forward to buying and testing out your kit using my Dylos particle meter. I currently use a WEN ceiling mounted air filter and it is not enough even though it is the larger size. I just purchased a Harvey g700 dust collector that is not yet hooked up. I also plan to add a cannister filter to the exhaust side of the WEN unit like shown in stumpy nubs video a few years back. My goal is to get the best air quality in a 2 car garage as possible and the particle meter is eye opening. I think you model B unit combined with the WEN w/ added cannister design should be very effective in the future.
@The3DHandyman8 ай бұрын
That sounds like a great combination for clean air. I've seen Stumpy's video. If I remember right, he uses the Wynn canister? I tested that one against a few cheaper alternatives and it's the best. I'll talk about it in my canister filter video. That should be out in the next few weeks. That g700 is a beast! Great choice. My Budget Jet can barely handle my CNC machine. I'll be needing an update some day soon. Not sure I could get one of those into my basement tho. Haha

Fantastic effort sir. I've been using the 8 inch AC infinity filter and wanted to build something like this to make it look nicer in the house. Happy to find that I can simply order the kit you've already designed!

Exceptional work, sir! Yes, many of us have for years been slapping together what has now become known as the CR, with anywhere from 1 to 5 furnace filters mated to an inexpensive box fan. The advent of the Rona brought additional interest and with it, a few improvements and answers to longstanding questions. I've watched several of your videos on the progression of your dive into air filtration, and very much appreciate your attention to detail and your dogged obsession with improvement along the way. Two things in this video caught my eye... your ceiling mounts and your carbon filtration, but I don't readily see these in your videos listing -- are they yet to be released?
@laboulesdebleu83358 ай бұрын
OK, I've seen a little more about the charcoal option in the Model B assembly guide video and am definitely interested in that one for my needs.
@The3DHandyman8 ай бұрын
Thank you, sir! I will have a video on the ceiling mounted version out the weekend, hopefully. Then in about a month or two I will have a video on VOC removal out. I have a lot of the data already though. I designed this kit to make up in the shortcomings that I was in all the other carbon filters that I tested. The outer filters will hopefully keep the charcoal effective for at least a year. My preliminary tests seem to indicate that is possible. Just got that kit listed: www.etsy.com/listing/1687840516 Let me know in Etsy if you have any questions. There are a lot of comments here to go through and it's easy for a reply to get lost 👍

I’m going to order the pre filter today, using your affiliate link. Built my 2nd model B yesterday. I wish the mesh came in different colors, don’t like that yellow. Can’t wait to see your how to install pre filter video coming up! Is this better than using speaker cloth as a prefilter?

little on the "300" comment, but still a great investment! after trying many and I mean many different air purifiers from amazon, I finally started looking at the "what-ifs" for different options and stumbled across your videos and channel - will definitely be ordering a few for the house! Thank you!

That is over the top crazy interesting. I love the testing and data you share. I built a previous version of one of your filters but now I see I should pull the air down and out which is opposite of how I did it.

It works in both ways. In some cases the up method works better. The concept deserves a video to itself and it will get one some day soon.
