I studied at San Carlos Seminary. Soc Villegas and I are on the same year book. A little different time then but not by much. Then and now, the religious would have an easy smile for their benefactors and the well-to-do, but seldom for us ordinaries, maybe not by intent but by habit. Then and now they use the pulpit to politicize people often against the will of many parishioners. Numb and dumb by what they perceive as an exalted status, they plod on with the usual vitriol acting like they are the enlightened elect. Criticizing, demonizing, disrespecting peoples elected officials but doing barely nothing. Often, they will be the first on the streets encouraging a reaction, but has nothing to offer other than the usual distressing "bring down" rhetoric. As for me, if there is much criminality and disorder around, it is not only the governments duty to stop it, it is as much the Church' obligation to prevent it. If all the church will be doing is demonize those who are actually trying (with some dying) to stop it, it is because the church have failed its work.

It is clear that God 'desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth' (1st Timothy 2:4). So we know that with Him, 'mercy triumphs over judgment'. Even so, 'free will' is not enough to explain why some are saved and some not. Romans 6:23 says that eternal life is a GIFT, not a reward for good deeds or even for making the right decision.

When I see or hear about President Duterte I am reminded of King Nebuchadnezzar whom the prophet Daniel served during Israel's Babylonian Captivity. Now before you go into an outrage, please hear me out first. At the start of his rule, Nebuchadnezzar wasn't an ideally benevolent ruler, in fact he was a despot, a feared dictator who dispenses cruel punishments. In fact he, Nebuchadnezzar, ordered that the Judean king who was disobedient to God in spite of the warnings Jeremiah gave him, to be blinded and as a result, was blind till he died. Nebuchadnezzar was the epitomy of a feared ruler and stern leader. He was fearless, arrogant and so sure of himself. He was the same leader who destroyed Jerusalem and Solomon's Temple. He had a huge golden statue of himself built to honor him and ordered the kingdom to worship it. Yet despite all these, in the Bible God called him "My Servant". To the Israelites, Nebu was the biggest scourge, a cruel punishment because of their disobedience to God for turning away from Him and instead, worshipped other gods to whom they built idols and statuettes. There was an abundance of social injustice - the poor were unjustifiably oppressed by the rich, while the temple priests turned a blind eye and colluded with the oppressors. Sounds familiar? Yet God called Nebu "My Servant" because he did as God pressed upon him to do, to BE THE INSTRUMENT OF PUNISHMENT AGAINST HIS DISOBEDIENT CHOSEN PEOPLE WHO HAVE ABANDONED HIM AND TURNED THEIR WAYS AGAINST HIM. But why did God choose King Nebu? Why not just send earthquakes to open the ground and swallow all those disobedient to His rule just like what happened in the wilderness during Moses' leadership? Did anyone really understand why? I'm sure the prophet Jeremiah did, and later on, Daniel too. In Isaiah, God says "My ways are not your ways, My thoughts are not your thoughts". As difficult as it is to understand God's ways, why He appointed king Nebu upon all Israel, and why He appointed Duterte upon the Philippines, we can only be sure that GOD KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING and that His ways are ALWAYS WISE and GOOD. At this point, we must remember Romans 13. "Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God." In the Berean Study Bible version it says: (Submission to Authorities) "1 Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which is from God. The authorities that exist have been appointed by God. 2 Consequently, the one WHO RESISTS authority IS OPPOSING what GOD HAS SET IN PLACE, and those who do so will BRING JUDGEMENT UPON THEMSELVES.…". In short po, obedience to God MEANS obedience to the authority He installed; Obedience to the authority God set in place MEANS OBEDIENCE to God. Thank you po.

When Pres. Duterte made his abominable comment re:"Stupid God", I was really taken aback & greatly appalled. How could he? Because even though at times he may have projected himself to be mean & sinister and/or how his opponents diabolically castigated him to be a person of such, I have always known him as a God-fearing individual with the kindest of heart. How on earth could he make such a blasphemous remark? After a while though, I realized this is surely another instance of his SMART RHETORICS (as he is dubbed by international analysts as a POLITICAL GENIUS), I believe he never really meant to desecrate God nor it's really a legit outburst of profanity & irreverence against God. It's so damn obvious & palpable, disrespecting the good Lord was never his intention. Pres. Duterte, in his speech during the Annual Nat'l. Convention of Vice Mayors League of the Phils, speaks about "Shaking the entire Tree...", "Testing the limits of everything". These are known strategies/abilities that only a few intellectual leaders can tactically employ. This is just tantamount to the brilliant decision made by the clever KING SOLOMON, in one Bible story in 1 Kings 3:16-28 where he ordered a sword to have a living child divided and be given to the two claiming mothers. This clearly shows a wise judgment the king had handed down which make the people feared him, for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him in administering justice. So, what's the relation between King SOLOMON and President DUTERTE? They both got a lot in common. They're bound to be considered & known as 2 amongst the world magnificent leaders/rulers...Two of the WISEST and GREATEST, that is... The HOLY BIBLE is very clear on the SEPARATION OF CHURCH & STATE. Unfortunately, though, churches' leaders blatantly disregarded this mandate of God and instead interfered, meddled, dived-in the DIRT OF POLITICS, not only most of the time but ALL OF THE TIME.
