It's not so much the violence that made old anime great. There were plenty of great anime that weren't anywhere near as gorey as this. What made the anime back then so great was just how experimental it all felt. From the 80s to the early 00s, we had plenty of great anime. Now it's all about pandering to shut-ins with cheap waifu templates and wish fulfillment.

Anyone remember Saturday Anime on the SciFi channel? The first real exposure of anime I got. Project A-ko, Venus Wars, Galaxy Express 999. You could see the animators hand in their work. The stuff now is just so blatantly computer aided. Not that its bad its just feels.....disconnected.

80s & 90s. Certainly Awesome good simpler times but I wouldn't say harder! No or limited internet, thus things weren't digitized nor so heavily logged & registered on data bases, so other people and the State couldn't track you down as easily and you had a lot more privacy and anonymity and you could get away with a lot of things more easily. Also no cell-phone zombie junkies all over the place looking to get their daily dopamine dose from likes & positive comments on social media, so people were more athletic and better looking over all focusing on real every day life and actual interactions with people.

Fucking hell! I remember often seeing this on the shelf at the old VHS stores in the anime section back in the day. Never figured it was this ultra violent given the box art mainly depicted the main character. Oh my fickle mind back then, this is some RoboCop level shit!

Anime was the bomb from 1970-1999. Anime took things to the next level of insaneness with violence, gore along with a compelling strong storyline that actually made people care about characters we rooted for. This mini-series was the cherry on top because of my love for Cyberpunk and excellent action and story. Incredible storyline + incredible characters + action = a masterpiece. This is one of them. Not to mention a fascinating concept.
