It works because it's a 4/4 song with a simple chord progression and no major bridges/breakdowns or changes in time signature or key. The only thing that gets garbled is lyrics.

Rhythmically this kind of dance beat treats 2 and 4 the same. Even in 4/4 things like latin rhythms will probably get pretty wonky as well as anything that’s counted more like 3 + 3 + 2, even otherwise simple songs like “Use Somebody” by Kings of Leon.
