Its great to see a good review of this game. I first played this game in the mid-90s and fell in love with it. I never find other people that have heard of it , let alone played it. Subscribing

I played this game out of curiosity using a NES emulator on a PC when I was about 13 years old. I loved it. I've never played anything like it, I only knew IBM's Alley Cat and Prince of Persia. I really enjoyed the tunes, the fairies, capturing the slug spirit, the little things going on between NPCs and the sweet ending sequence. Legend of The Ghost Lion, pointed me to other nice NES adventures like Musashi no Bōken, I'm glad I played it. I liked this game so much, I got the japanese movie on Laserdisc and got it sent to a professional movie lab to get the pristine data out of it. Might watch it again soon.

Ohhhhhhh if you got a good high quality version, let us know if you ever upload it anywhere! I’d love to see that.

@@The8BitDuke Oh sure! for some reason the french lab I sent the laserdisc to, gave the data back to me in two formats, one is a DVD that has the picture quality you can expect from early laserdiscs and the other is a bluray disc clocking 107 minutes that i'm sure it's the best known visual representation of this film, I assume they located a master somewhere or did some insane upscaling job for the bluray disc because it looks superb, I can watch it but I don't have material to rip a bluray disc. I do have a hacked Playstation 3 however and I've heard you can rip BR Discs with those, so I'll try to do it as soon as I can, put it somewhere and let you know. Just don't tell Sony!

The combat becomes much more manageable once you realize the magic rope item necessary for some parts of the overworld is usable in combat. It binds the monsters for a few turns and is reusable.

I feel like I’m having a bit of Deja vu here. But that’s silly. This is clearly a brand new video! ;) Great to see another 8 Bit Duke video on the internets. And it’s cool to see a more in-depth revisiting of this game. And even though this one has a lack of jokes about Bread losing its peanut butter and jelly supply, I’ll still give it a Like. :P Hope you’re doing well, man!

I learned about the movie via articles about the game, and ended up watching the movie on KZbin. After I saw it, I saw you mention this video in the comments of the movie and decided to go check out your video. This is a really good video! While I disagree with your (very understandable) opinion of the movie, I like how you keep comparing the two.

I still have to beat this game and Phantasy Star because out of all the 80s and 90s (j)rpgs I've played over the years, these two game are the ones that I've tried playing and beating many times but I keep forgetting where I was at in these games for one reason or another...

Nice to see you back again! This video was very interesting, and i'm kinda surprised they made the movie in full english but never released it over here. You'd think it would be a no brainer to put on DVD/Blu-ray here since it's already dubbed, but I guess it must have not done well.

I know how lame I'm going to sound, but I just can't get into RPGs that don't show both the party and monsters on screen. The closest I can get to this style is PSIV. I'm a late 90's nerd, and it spoiled me.
@The8BitDuke5 жыл бұрын
Have you ever played Shining The Holy Ark on Saturn? It’s the same kinda style as Shining In The Darkness in Genesis, but it’s from a first-person view - so you see your party run up and hit the enemies, and you see the enemies come around the corner or crawl up from the dirt or fall from the ceiling - I really like that! But I know what you mean, it feels a little empty if you don’t see the party. That’s something I’m really glad they’ve added into Dragon Quest now hahaha

That is insane - I bought this from a seller locally in Ohio for not THAT much. It probably goes for around 150 with the box, but my box is a bit rough so the price was much nice. I think she’s about 75-80 for just the cart.

Nice to see you back again. Great choice of game to review for your return! I happen to own a complete copy, I got it quite a few years ago before it became collectible. I did get through the game once. I agree, the Ghost Lion is tough to beat! I'm still wondering why they chose an 80's style workout girl for that cover. Strange.

The movie looks insanely silly and boring, but the game isn't THAT far off from the movie. The basic beats are there, just twisted. Reminds me a lot of Warlock on the SNES/Genesis where they basically merged the first two movies together to create a new plot.
