This situation unfolded after Big Zulu, whose real name is Siyabonga Nene, a highly renowned South African rapper, released a diss track aimed at addressing the current state of SA Hip Hop. In this track, Big Zulu took direct shots at some of the industry's biggest names, including K.O (real name Ntokozo Mdluli) and Kwesta (real name Senzo Vilakazi), both of whom were prominently featured in his lyrics. In response, K.O and Kwesta wasted no time clapping back with their own diss tracks.
Kwesta dropped 'Quantum,' a track packed with metaphors referencing Big Zulu's past as a ‘Nkabi’ (a hitman) and his history as a taxi driver. The title 'Quantum' cleverly alludes to the popular minibus taxis that dominate the South African transportation industry, and Kwesta uses this to take a jab at Big Zulu’s earlier life. On the other hand, K.O fired back with 'Omega Freestyle,' in which he specifically references the type of shoes worn by many taxi drivers in South Africa, further digging at Big Zulu’s background.
In this interview, we explore the significant impact that Big Zulu’s diss track has had on the South African hip-hop community. These lyrical battles have reignited the competitive spirit within the genre, drawing widespread attention from fans, fellow artists, and media outlets alike. While diss tracks are a long-standing tradition in global hip hop, the SA Hip Hop scene has not seen this level of back-and-forth intensity in years.
Duncan, another prominent figure in the industry (real name Sphamandla Mbambo), was also targeted by Big Zulu in his diss track. Duncan responded with his own fiery rebuttal, delivering shots that cut deep and shook Big Zulu. Duncan's response was so personal that it prompted Big Zulu to publicly promise to "deal with him in person," as the feud seemed to cross from professional rap beef into personal territory.
However, during the interview, Big Zulu, K.O, and Kwesta all emphasize that, despite the aggressive tone of the diss tracks, none of this is personal. They make it clear that these exchanges are simply a form of lyrical exercise, a way to showcase their rapping abilities and push the boundaries of their craft. Big Zulu, hailing from the small township of Bergville in KwaZulu-Natal, has made a name for himself not just through his sharp lyrics but also by staying true to his roots and drawing from his personal experiences.
The diss tracks may have stirred up controversy, but they have also brought a renewed focus to SA Hip Hop, reinvigorating the competitive edge that has been missing from the scene. As the three artists continue to exchange bars, it is clear that the rivalry remains strictly within the realm of music, adding excitement and intensity to the genre without venturing into real-life animosity.
