For one, using the cutting edge takes off too much ferro and leaves divots in the rod and second, you never strike moving the knife - you should be drawing the rod over the top of the knife while it stays stationary.

But in fact, yes. What else scrapes the fragments off the rod creating enough heat to ignite them? Visit a machine shop or quickly drill steel yourself and see what heat is created. The shavings can come off glowing red-hot. Behaving like magnesium, when ferro rod shavings are peeled off fast enough they are hot enough to ignite. That's friction scraping it off. This is why magnesium has to be machined at slower speeds and with coolant - too prevent it from burning up. Magnesium burns at 3,000 degrees F when ignited. On a very small scale, it's not very difficult to create those temperatures. For example: Even the burning ember of a cigarette approaches 1300 degrees F. Magnesium can ignite at just 1166 F. Fun facts. Great Job making this display! My respect to this producer! Wow! Fun to watch. Interesting to combine alternate ignition. Photographing rod sparks is more dramatic and maybe easier than trying to capture the effect of lighter flint and striker wheel.
