Hi, I'm from Portugal, I study biology and I love watching your videos. There are a few ways to get around some of the flaws in the experience. If you have your back to the wall and your arms down, not only are you in a more comfortable position (without your face crushed against the wall), but you also prevent your hands from escaping the glove and you can use the soles of your feet (instead of from the sides) because you can bend your legs.

For a fun summer science project, I actually had the same idea, and had about the same success. The two biggest things I encountered were: 1. Keeping the hands in the gloves and 2. Keeping the surface clean. I touched the hood of my buddy's car with it, and it stuck really well but even that thin layer of dust made it not work afterwards at all, even with the self-cleaning. So if you could somehow find a way to keep the gloves on and keep the pads clean enough to work but still be versatile enough to use consistently, then you might be golden.

Yeah you definitely need to find a good movement that helps you take it off while you're still climbing...plus you can try with just the finger tips with tape...as far as getting it off maybe a wave like motion from a certain angle can help? Worth a try. Have fun.
@TheStigma
@TheStigma 2 жыл бұрын
This actually seems very plausible. I think the main problem here is more about the nanotape being very poorly integrated into and supported by the suit than the adhesion not being strong enough. If it was woven into the material and you had really good strappings to distribute the weight properly I think this would work fine. You would need to use a very different and methodical way of climbing, so it would probably require some practise to utilize fully too. I dont foresee people climbing up buildings like spiderman anytime soon, but I can totally see this being used to enhance climbing gloves, or even some work gloves. Usually these rely on rubber to enhance friction to prevent slipping - but this anti-shear adhesion seems way more powerful. This material is sure to have lots of usecases outside of just tape. It doesnt seem to be very expensive on a cursory search, so I think I might have to give this a try.
@Vaatrad
@Vaatrad 2 жыл бұрын
This. You don't want the hand to do any gripping, you don't want any question of the hand staying in the glove (to which the tape is attached). The hand needs to stay as flat as possible (when bearing weight) with strapping/structure to allow the weight to be borne at the elbow/shoulder/torso.
@TheStigma
@TheStigma 2 жыл бұрын
@@Vaatrad Yes, it would likely be best to have a full gauntlet up to the elbow, with rigid parts to transfer the force. You may as well add more adhesion surface to the forearm then also, allowing you more options. A weird idea worth exploring could be to have the inside also be made of nanotape (meshed) so that the force could directly be transfered to the skin very evenly and not allow any slippage. That could in theory be much simpler, cheaper and more comfortable. I dont know if sweat might impair the adhesion, but I dont see why it would be a problem to use one skin when there is no chemical or permanent bonding :)

@@Vaatrad I believe it would be best to do a vest with multiple fabric strips going from the back and chest to disperse the weight, using my hand as the average the example a human hand is 18.5 in² and the tape advertises 7.7 pounds per in² giving us 144.76 per hand while both hands may give us enough strength to stick to a wall but unfortunately that is just sticking our goal is climbing. So we need a foot pad, the side of the shoe approach we saw in this video definitely would give us a stable enough platform to actually climb a wall so we either need to do it in the front of the shoe or a slightly less aesthetic but more utilitarian approach would be to have a rotating panel with a hinge that could go from straight forward 0°to a 75° angle inward to give us more wiggle room while climbing and lastly on the shoes would be the actual shoe itself, I weigh roughly 220 and supporting the remaining 75 pounds on your ankles and soles while climbing isn't fun, so as the final part of brainstorming we need to make climbing comfortable so on the bottom the shoe I made an aluminum platform the the hinge could rotate on giving us a more stable ascent. Finally all that's left is put it all together and start climbing, not that I have one 😉

I have an idea how you can make this work. If the gloves were made to be held with a bar grip built inside the glove, you would have much better support to hold your weight while you climb while also keeping your hand from slipping out the glove. I imagine this design requires its structure to be quite sturdy in order to avoid shearing the grip out from inside the glove when you put weight on it.

I did the math and you'd need to have four nanotape pads (for each limb) with a radius of ~45cm for 70kg to effectively climb a wall In theory

@women.9445
@women.9445 2 жыл бұрын
@@arad2456 uhm it was a while ago I dont remember too clearly but I think I got the approximate average surface area of an average geckos feet which use practically the same material and then scaled it up using ratios and mathematics to calculate the surface area of nanotape needed for that specific weight. There's probably more factors such as limb length etc etc. Also note I took the geckos feet as just perfect circles since they're irregular shapes which basically helps with my estimate being very conservative and over the actual surface area needed

I'd recommend some straps fitted to the gloves that wrap around your arm to hold the gloves on. Instead of tape on your shoes, try kneepads with the tape on them.

Try it with your fingers pointed down. You’d have to have your hands near your waist to get the right angle. The problem with your fingers pointed up is that the gloves are spilling your hands out. With the open side down, it’s basically a bucket turned upside down, the perfect way to dump all its contents. Also, try it with your back to the wall and the tape on the bottom of the shoe.

Literally today, living in Hawaii, we had a golden day gecko walking around our hood and side window at 55MPH. There were some funny moments, but the dude found a safe spot and survived the 25 minute ordeal. It is a common thing here. But is really a testament to this video and the science.

A gecko's tail comes into it as well. The point you were making about the hammer having a twisting motion... a gecko pushes its tail into the wall to counter any rotational forces.

You can stick in backwards direction (FACING TOWARDS CAMERA) putting nano tape on the back of your body to stick on wall ( I think the perfect mechanic)
@whyjaywonders
@whyjaywonders 2 жыл бұрын
Nice try! Major problem is even the first step works, to make the next one you need unglue the arm to advance up the wall and there lies the problem as it is counterintuitive since we need the arm to stick very strong to the wall and it will require equal amount of strength to unglue it.

i think a more mechanically viable thing would be to make what are essentially tonfas, but with the tape on the long side, and probably flattened and flexible to allow for some good bendability so that you can actually detach from the wall. a similar idea could be done for the feet, either using similar tonfas or by making rigid shoes to allow a straigh foot approach. one thing worth considering though is the walls strength, im sure they arent designed to support an adults weight on them like that. also that making these things does make the whole project significantly more expensive as well

he needs toe hinged/flippable nano tape secondary soles on your sneakers so can walk up the wall and bear most of the weight like your feet are resting on temporary platforms. This with some nano tape gloves with internal supports in the wrist area which connect straight down to shoes with tensionable straps, so can transmit forces between both hands and feet ,for a coordinated 3 out 4 static contact points wall crawl eg upward right foot followed by right hand followed by left foot followed by left hand and somewhat similarly for sideway wall crawl. with this setup can progress only needing to shift about 25% of your weight per action.. Add a nano belt contact point and even less effort would be needed...

@The Action Lab Put the NANO TAPE on the INSIDES of your knees. Also, the the agrigate total of your footprint against the surface needs to be increased so that the RATIO of your "ADHESIVE-CONTACT-AREA" to BODYWEIGHT is similar to the RATIO of a gecko's FOOTPRINT to BODYWEIGHT.

You should do this again but with big flat plates with handles on the back. That will give you more surface area for the tape, but also it will be easier to hold onto compared to keeping your hands in gloves. Humans can climb, the problem is that a human can't easily climb a flat vertical surface, unless the surface has a niche that you can grab onto. That's where the plates would come in.
@junyutan9408

Go for climbing shoes with no tape, it’s counter intuitive but using toes are how climbers climb. Check the Wide Boyz channel for tape gloves used in crack climbing, and overlay the nano tape on that might work. The nano tape looks insane, I think it might be doable.
