The device shown here has been called a ferrocell. To be clear, it probably does not show the magnetic field lines. Most likely it shows the specular reflection that results from the iron particles aligning to the magnetic field lines (kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppScmJuMmZalqdk). This seems like an active area of interest and there may be some value to the ferrocell even if it doesn't necessarily show the magnetic field lines.

reminded me a physics experiment back from highschool. the setup consisted of a glass sphere with vaccuum inside, as well as a piece of coal in a circuit acting as resistence. over it was a cone with hollow tip, so when the coal was electrified, it generated a beam of light that was actually purely negatively charged. The real show was when two hugeass electromagnets were also powered up, which ultimately curved the beam of light in the vaccuum, bending it all the way into a coil, if my memory didn’t exaggerate the visual in the last 20 years. I thought it was going to be that, but still thanks for rehashing those fond memories from the lab. There probably is a standard name for this experiment device and you - and anyone else reading it - probably knows. but given your content, I’m sure it would be cool both for watching and creating.

Just so anyone can understand: There’s a difference between bending a light ray without a change of medium (n1=n2) as in actively changing a photons path by some force acting on that photon and changing the path of particles with light reflecting on them. Therefore you’re not bending light in the literal sense. The only force that can do that is gravity.

Nowadays students don’t get to experiment, record their results and form their own conclusions. A hundred people following a recipe of ingredients, techniques and cooking temperature and time. Will end up with completely different outcomes. The experiments and narratives are always fascinating.

2:06 Magnets are so cool! I received a magnet set when I was a kid for Christmas one year. I was always experimenting with it. In fact, I snuck my magnet set outside and often took it to my neighborhood playground. I waved my magnets over the sand and was surprised to see these non-living "black things" jump up out of the sand and cling to the magnets! I didn't find out they were iron filings until I was a lot older. I just thought they were magic little creatures (I pretended they were alive) that needed to be rescued from the sand. Lol I didn't keep them because I didn't want my mom to know I took my magnets outside. She never said I couldn't, and I never asked. I just assumed I'd get in trouble. 🤔 Anyway, when I was an adult (or at least pretending to be one... haha), I took a newly purchased magnet out to some sand at a local park. I wanted to show my daughter the same "magic" I experienced. Unfortunately, this didn't go well. There were no magic beings waiting to be rescued from THIS sand!! How disappointing. So, off to the internet to try to figure out why they weren't there. From what I could find, iron pilings are sometimes found in beach sand. I'm assuming, then, the local park didn't use beach sand. Or, perhaps it was filtered to remove such "imperfections" like iron filings. 😡 I was truly upset about not being able to share this magic with my daughter, so I purchased iron filings online and placed them in Dollar store sand for my daughter to find. Lol I don't have a technical, logical, scientific mind. I'm more of the imaginative type. But that's what makes magnets so appealing: they "attract" both left AND right brained people. 🙂

First off, don’t type “WRONG” unless you’ve got the correct answer and want to share what it is. Secondly, it doesn’t. Magnetic field lines aren’t physical and you don’t see the field lines. You can see the actual lines, but you can see where they are. Like putting smoke into the air. The smoke doesn’t make the air visible, but you can see how it’s moving. That nail trick looks like it would work to find stud locations in the wall where sheetrock is screwed to the studs!

That is very nice visualisation. I guess the intensity of the field could be approximated by measuring the size of the magnetic field arc produced by the magnet and then comparing it with the magnetometer reading. The bigger the arc produced the higher the intensity at the source? I wonder how accurate such approximation would be...

Greetings my friend! First of all, I want to salute you that indeed, such amazing job and wonderful experiment you've had carried out here and am sure this very short yet powerful clip does finally solved a long-standing doubt and a straight solid answer to the point which has been much disputed among the scientific research field, Bravo! Anyways, here's a personal question out of my curiousity that I would love to bring out to you James, or perhaps everyone for a fun discussion/ consult. So here's my question :- **How far can a magnetic field bend light? Could it be bent enough so that it goes around a three dimensional object and comes out (after going 180 degrees, I guess) the other side, being bent by the magnet, therefore making it seem as though the object had the light bass through it completely, and it does not appear to the human eye? Here is the best example I can give: -->=light, O=Object, *=mag. field, / or \=light bent. **___** |***| If this can be done, please tell --->/*O*\---> me how, and what would be needed to perform such a thing. ( PS - This would need to be done in a round sense, as in all around the 3-d object, not in just one line, so kindly please keep that in consideration. Also, if anyone know any other way to get the desired effect please feel free to comment or reply me here, CHEERS! )** Wishing everyone good health and may that divine bliss and perfect happiness follow every single beautiful souls here bring endless joy and fulfillment for the rest of your life. Blessed Be. AN'ANASHA!✨❤🌈

Graphite powder for lubricating locks is diamagnetic and will also illustrate magnetic fields when mixed in mineral oil in a bottle or a shallow tray. Conveniently, the flakes are reactive to the magnetic field but do NOT all clump toward the magnet at all.

Excellent. It might help us if you would show the north and south pole lines carefully and slowly to us without just moving the magnets.

that reminds me a little bit of what it looked like back in the days of CRT television when I walked by the TV with a big magnet and the picture went all goofy-looking. Moving the maget around on the screen, everything right around the poles of the magnet distorted (since the magnet altered the path of the electron-beam).

Super cool video! It would be interesting to see what the ferrofluid alignments look like when you try to touch the same sides of magnets together, like N to N, or S to S? and maybe see how the magnetic lock works on it too (the one you had in a previous video that can turn on an off by turning the alignment of two magnets together)
