So, since wood exudes volatiles when it's heated, then heating it under vacuum would actually cause the volatiles to escape even sooner because there is no pressure helping to hold it together. What if we tried it the other way around? What if we INCREASED the pressure and tried melting the wood? Could we melt wood in supercritical carbon dioxide? That would probably dissolve the volatiles and we would get recrystallized organic compounds when the pressure was released. What if we tried something inert, like high pressure argon? What would that do?

The volatiles are a degradation product which means you would still get burnt wood with volatiles that would escape when you released pressure eventually

@@paprikalp7989 This is exactly correct. In fact, heating wood in carbon dioxide is how we have been making charcoal for millennia. Edit - OH, this just made me realize something. A whole lot of americans are kind of obsessed with BBQ. We can have charcoal in both natural chunk style *and* briquette style. Those briquettes? They're probably actually melted together in the process of manufacture. That would explain why they don't fall apart if they get damp or something.

The scientists in Switzerland didn't win the award just for getting lucky, but more so the detailed description of what is happening. It is not exceedingly rare that observations are made by non-scientists first, but they don't realize the significance or they lack the tools and knowledge to study and properly describe it. Then later scientists stumble over the same observation and then study and describe it properly. It's always interesting when that happens though, I wonder how many important observations have already been made but never published and described.

@@zagreus5773A lot of accumulated human knowledge was just observations without scientific study and description. Example, in the 1800s, preserving fruits for winter using layers of sugar and chopped raisins in a sealed jar was common. Nowadays, science knows that chopped raisins release antioxidants, which help in preventing the degradation of the preserved fruit. Back then, they just knew it helped.

Cool effect that I didn't know about! I see several comments asserting that this is how the various fiberboards are made (HDF and MDF), but a quick google search suggests that these products use a synthetic resin as a bonding agent and are not just fused melted wood. Steam bending wood does have a very long history, but, as far as I know, can't be used to fuse two pieces of wood together, only to mildly change the shape of a single piece of wood of limited thickness.

I wonder how this could be adapted to construction to encourage more reuse as well as of course reducing adhesives which are generally one of the most toxic construction materials anyways

The lignin in bamboo is a lot of fun to work with. I would recommend using a heat gun to bend bamboo. If you are patient you can make some incredible curves with strips of bamboo. The greener bamboo is more tolerant with being bent, I soak the more seasoned bamboo in water to then avoid burning it with the torch or heat gun. Great video!

Okay, this works for fastening one end of a round wood dowel into a round hole in the wood. That only gets half the job done. How about the other end of the dowel? You can't spin it to heat it to the bonding point. How about a square or rectangular tenon in a mortise? You can't spin either end. You can't really vibrate it the way the Swiss did, either. Maybe some ultrasonic energy applied to rectilinear joints in a focused manner would work? Or focused laser energy? There's more experimentation waiting to be done to broaden this technique for more versatile applicability.

I used to work in a wood shop for the Navy. One of my tasks was shaping the wood for boat beading. We used to steam the wood and get it very hot and then pull it out and bend it quickly and then let it cool in the bent shape

Im making kites using bamboo for 34 years. Im using fire to straighten slightly curved bamboo sticks since 90's to make easier build a kite that flies flawlessly. Someone told me that bending bamboo while slightly putting it in fire actually bends it permanently while im trying to pick straight bamboo sticks.

6:24 That might also just be because you heated the wood unevenly and left one side with less material causing it to bend but i'm not really sure about that since it looked like you hit it with the laser closer to the top

Wow! I hope that the worker who accidentally discovered that you could weld wood without the need for plastic was given a raise or promotion! After all, he found a more environmentally friendly, cheaper method that also saved time! (Also, since it eliminated the fumes created by melting plastic, it was safer!) That sort of discovery is priceless!
@jwhite5008
@jwhite5008 5 ай бұрын
It might be oversold a bit... while woodwelding has its uses, it is not going to replace adhesives any time soon, and neither are the adhesives as problematic as they may seem. Melting plastic adhesive *properly* should release very little fumes. Generally this process is more expensive and labor-intensive in comparison to adhesives but it depends on circumstances. As for environment - the impact is not completely negligible at scale but not large either. Building more robust objects that are not expected to be replaced as often is much more important that producing them in a more environmentally-friendly way. It may be possible to do both.

The second part about permanently bending wood under high temperature exists for more than a thousand years now. The primary use of this technique was in ship construction which is also used to this day. Only difference is that it uses steam to achieve high enough temperature without burning the wood.

Hints to pronounce German words. "ie" is an ee sound, "ei" is an eye sound, "sch" = sh, v's are f's and w's are v's. This is always true and there are no exceptions. Bonus round is that "th" is a short t-h sound, so "thor" is said "tor" :). Thanks for another great video :D

Tbh, there are plenty of strong natural glues that are much less damaging to the environment than running an electric drill, especially a battery powered one (by far the most common type of drill these days). Mining and refining lithium and charging it with a power station that's probably made of an unthinkable amount of steel and concrete and powered by fossil fuels made from countless dead lifeforms, condensed over millions of years, connected with a power grid that also relies on very large amounts of steel, together with various rare minerals vs Finding a dead animal, soaking its hide and straining the glue from it Probably possible to make a vegan version with pectin instead of gelatin too, though I havn't heard of any attempt. Still amazing though. =)
