I feel confident that once robots are ready for prime time, that they're gonna proliferate extremely quickly for the simple reason that they can speed up basically all aspects of resource extraction and manufacturing. E.g. Mining company Rio Tinto is already using autonomous machines to dig for resources. And as you pointed out, the robots can can help build more robots. And all this can happen basically 24/7/365. Very amazing - but also scary. We already destroy mountains of earth each day for resources. Once that's automated, I'm a bit terrified of the likely extremely unsustainable results

Something is obviously different from the past, there are so many companies getting into this now. If the tech wasn't ready companies like this wouldn't be gearing up. The obvious thing is that the main technical hurdle is AI software that can handle diverse tasks. But if anyone has seen Gemini 2.0. we may have already passed that hurdle. Reasoning is the current frontier for these robots but there has been some progress here as well. When a frontier model takes 6 months to train i wouldn't be surprised the models for these robots are already being backed.

Humanoid robots to cut factory workers and eliminate labor costs -> generate more profit -> reinvest in automating factory for maximum efficiency I work a boring factory job and think about different hypothetical machines that could build the thing I'm making (humidifiers) faster but the cost of those would be extremely high. Once you can just plug one of these robots into a human role, you can save costs and use that extra profit to increase efficiency and output (every factory in the world will be doing this). Things are about to get very weird in the next 10 years.

I could understand if there were a labor shortage in China but that's not the case. These robots are not necessary if there are already humans that can do the work of these robots. Isn't President Musk/Trump already all in with China's cheap labor? Here is a snippet from an American Prospect article… "You can argue about whether the U.S. should be restricting investment in China. But it’s incontrovertible that a billionaire who has a bunch of investments in China and wants to make more all of a sudden disrupted a normal congressional process that was going to restrict that investment with a bunch of lies from his media platform. And lo and behold, when the new funding bill emerged, the outbound investment feature was dropped. In fact, all traces of provisions related to China were removed from the bill. Donald Trump preens as someone determined to “get tough” on China. But he’s empowered someone with serious business entanglements in China to seemingly serve as a barrier to any policies related to China over the next four years." I'm sure MAGA just loves this news........well, they pretty much are okay with every lie Trump tells them, so there is that.
