Күн бұрын

The beautiful and groundbreaking 156 was one of Alfa Romeo's biggest successes in the late 1990's, with more than 670,000 cars built. Today, in the UK, the ravages of rust mean that less than 1% of the cars sold here are still on the road! Chris the Alfa Nut takes his super rare, restored 1998 156 2.5 litre V6 for a late Summer spin and talks about how this happened.

Hi, Chris, That's a beautiful example of the Alfa 156 and would be complete with the tanned interior. The detailing of the engine is excellent especially with the polished ports. However, with regards to your misfiring issue, it is possibly as a result of the replacement cold air induction pipe kit. Make sure it is properly secured with all clips, hoses, etc. are airtight. This is indeed common on the Busso engines. I had the same issue on my 164 3.0 V6 something ago, which was quite embarrassing as it started spitting out fire. The issue was sorted immediately as I secured the fastening clips.

I’m a strong believer that the 156 saved Alfa Romeo in the late 90s. Winning European Car Of The Year in 1998 really helped raise the cars profile. Walter De Silva and his team at Centro Stile did a great job designing the 156 and it’s stood the test of time and looks better than ever today. Well done Chris for saving this one from scrap. Many wouldn’t! It looks fantastic now. If you would like to see more 156 goodness please see my channel and video on my super low mileage dream 156. Thanks again for awesome videos Chris 😎

I personally think the Giulia was a generation too late. If the 159 was a RWD platform it might have changed Alfa's fortunes. Whilst it's still a beautiful car, it doesn't seem to have that much going for it other than being a good cruiser and very good looking.

Great video and great restoration. I have owned an Alfa Romeo 156 SW 2.5 V6 for more than 10 years, and never had any problem of rust. I thought that rust was a problem for Alfa Romeos of the 70's and 80's, but not anymore in the 90's and after. The V6 Busso has a lot of character and its sound is so great. The design of the 156 is awesome.

Hi Alfa Nut. I've lately become a fun of Alfa Romeos. I'm really interested in a156 T-Spar 1.6 that has been abandoned for some years now. Its gone for about 80,000KM, which I feel is still got some 20k to go before I start changing stuff here and there. What is your take on this. Its Rosso Red, Dark Blue Momo leather seats and a wooden steering wheel...such a beauty.

These cars in general are getting rarer and rarer. They need a lot of tlc but for some models its worth it. I have a 2004 GTA sport wagon, in Gabiano Azuro. The "how many left" site doesn't specify between saloon and SW and only states 109GTAs Road legal left in the UK. I reckon about 35 of them are sports wagons. I’ve seen a lot of them on their way out with barely running twin spark engines. They require solid maintenance, especially at higher miles, and the 5th or 10th owner usually isn’t to keen on that. Also, the 156 has double wishbone suspension, which is very cool, but also sensitive to maintenance and expensive to fix vs. struts. I know a 156 owner who scrapped it because of the expensive work required on the suspension 😢

I miss my 2001 156 V6 SP3. Black with white leather. Bought it back in 2007, previous owner neglected it and I was new to Alfas so spent about £2k in repairs but then it didn’t put a foot wrong for 3 years and was warmed up then thrashed everyday. Put a Cybox cat back (tried a decat but it sounded horrendous) and a BMC Carbon intake and she turned heads… Sold it with 125k miles and apart from 4th gear syncro getting a bit noisy when rushed she lasted a good few years. When freshly washed with clean wheels she was a gorgeous gorgeous thing, every angle. I’d love a GTV V6 2.0 Turbo - Italian special 👌

What a gorgeous car.....im envious. I had a 156 2.0 TS sport 2 back in 2001 and had it for 8 years. I loved it.....ok, no V6 for sure but still character there and style. My last Alfa was a 2002 147 with the same engine that I saved from being taken as a part ex for just £100 ,mental isn't it.....and with some TLC it was A super fun fast car with real style.......I think another Alfa is long overdue in my lock up, I prefer the pre 159 style cars myself but they are getting thin on the ground like you say. I guess it's the badge that matters though in the end isn't it. Good upload, I totally get the passion of this brand👌

some years ago, I bought ( sight unseen ) a stock 98 Alfa 156 2.5 24V in silver with red leather and wooden steeringwheel and gearshifter for less than 1000€. One owner and always maintained by Ferrari ( ..no joke ). scratches on every corner of the car ( due to the age of the owner I gues ), but no rust and no technical issues. After 40000km , the waterpump slowly started to leak.... Back in the days, I coudn't afford the labour for a new timing belt and waterpump. So, I sold it :-( It was one of my best cars ever!! Nice one mate. Cuore sportivo sempre.

Cheers Rob - I'm pretty sure that the misfire is just old ignition coils which need replaced, the bummer is that they are on the rear bank of cylinders, so a top end strip down is needed. I'll just stop complaining and get on with it!

Hello @thealfanut , great car and great video! I would like to ask you why this sport package model isn’t really famous here in italy. How it is called? and for which version/engines was available? Also, how you can know if the body work is original or not? thank you so much
@TheAlfaNut
@TheAlfaNut 8 ай бұрын
Ciao! Thanks for watching. The reason why this version is not known in Italy is because it was a package fitted only by UK dealers at the time. “Sport Pack 1” “Sport Pack 2” and “Sport Pack 3” (this car is an SP3). The packs were only fitted to the Twinspark and 2.5 V6 Lusso versions of the 156 I believe and included 2 versions of the rear spoiler (low and high) black instrument dials with orange letters instead of white, a carbon wrap on the centre console and lower, uprated suspension. The bodywork is original because I have old photos of the car when it was new. The wheels originally supplied on the Sport Pack cars were 16” Teledials but my car has custom made 17” wheels which are replicas of the 166 “Supersport” alloys. These were made by a British company who are now closed and I have never seen another set.

I had a silver 1.8 T-spark. Lovely to drive but the MOT said it needed just under a grand worth of welding and most of the suspension bushings plus brakes were getting close and an airbag light was on. Glad to see 156`s are getting the recognition they deserve. I`ve got 2, a silver/red leather `01 TS 2.0 and a fantasy blue/black leather `98 V6. Also have 4 other Alfas - `61 Giulietta Spider, `65 Giulia Ti 1600, `70 GTJ, `74 GTV 2000. Have owned many many previous Alfas and firmly believe 156`s are one of the better cars Alfa have made and in the greater scale of things likely to be " a minor collectible" Alfa. Over here in NZ they sold very well and because of our kinder to cars climate there are still many around. Rust is not an issue but sun damaged paint work and sun damaged leather upholstery is.

I also have a 2001 Busso engined 156 and without doubt the misfire is because of the rear bank of coils. There isn't much airflow back there and the original Bosch coils have a service life of exactly ten years. You will need to replace all six coils and all six spark plugs (iridium's) if you truly want a reliable car that goes as well as it looks. I did mine ten years ago when it was ten years old. I used Bosch coils with NGK plugs and it has been perfect ever since.
