I’ve always wondered. Have “normal” animals ever existed in the Avatar universe? Like how Naga is a polar bear dog, does that mean polar bears and dogs were separate animals in the past? Does anyone in that world even know what a polar bear and a dog look like individually? I have watched avatar, but it was a while ago so I don’t remember if this was mentioned.

Lots of animals within the avatar universe are chimeric, few normal animals exist but they're there wolves, foxes, and yaks just to name a few. The southern water tribe's armor is actually based off of the wolf, sokkas ponytail is called a warriors wolftail, hell actual wolves and yaks both appear in Amons origin story

@Laquelectro that is possible but I honestly can’t see a platypus and a bear mating. The reason I asked the question is cause some of the mixes of animals just didn’t seem right when thinking of the two animals matings to create the current product. Like it’s very hard to imagine a platypus and a bear mating somehow. Like how would that even work. But then again, the possibility isn’t 0.

Bosco the bear exists within the avatar universe. However, due to the gaang's reaction to bosco being just a bear, it can be concluded that chimeric animals are so common that regular species are rare. They do exist, of course, since bosco and other background animals are living proof of regular animals in the avatar world

I like to think of it like they use the same words to describe animals with similar features. Like crococats and cat owls for example, although regular cats might not exist in the avatar world, they both share similar features, and animals with those features are described with the word "cat"

This is by far the main reason why I liked LOK because of Naga and Pabu. Wasn't a fan of the show. But I still watched it since it's from the Avatar universe. Season 2 was the worst season for me but season 1 and season 3 and 4 were good seasons. The show is decent and it's not bad as I thought it would be. But you know I still prefer the original.
