Man, Aravos/Viren is seriously one of the most terrifying villains I've ever seen. It made my skin crawl how he _always_ had the perfect plan in every situation all the way through the end of season three and seemed to be three steps ahead of absolutely everyone. He really does seem unstoppable. But I guess now that the dragon prince has been returned to his mother and the mother is alive, I guess the universe maybe has a shot at survival. Hopefully Zym has some crazy magical powers up his sleeve.

I want to believe that Aaravos had a Human lover, and by the same token he also wanted to help Humanity in their struggles. Thus introducing them Dark Magic. The other Elves and Dragons found out about this, seeing the dangers it could posse and they could either bear the thought of “LESSER BEINGS” finally reaching their level. They decided to banish all the Humans from Xadia and lock Aaravos in the mirror out of pure fear, desperation, and greed. Thus also explaining Aaravos hatred towards the Elves and Dragons.

Aaravos is following a couple of old english/celtic fae rules in the first few episodes. First: Elves, fae, fairies, aren't supposed to give their names because they are essentially fallen angels. They are less malicious than demons, but not good enough to be in heaven. If they give their name, they are actually giving the other entity power to control them. It isn't just a name, but their essence. Second: fae cannot lie. A side effect of being part angel. Most folklore that involves the rule shows how easily they can twist the truth to suit their needs. Humans are wary of fae in most folklore because there's a high chance that the elf will be more demon than angel and cause them misfortune. Most of the stories involve them kidnapping humans.

They exist anywhere nature is. But that doesn't just mean where forests are. No, no, no. They exist wherever life flourishes. So, the air, the sky, the desert, the sea, the forest, etc. The fae are everywhere. Edit: I just remembered something that I was told once, the person basically said this, "Fae are neither good nor evil. They are neutral. They do not take a side."

I find him so intriguing. I know he's done a lot of bad things but he is, like Viren, on a search for equality of humans and peace for them. I assume he's seen the arrogance he often talks about in Xadias inhabitants and thus has over the years instead found empathy for the humans and rage for his own people. The positive emotions and his wish to help are seen in his protection of that one city, that story of the young queen of Kadolis a few hundred years ago and his feelings when he's given an apple by a human, for example. He's been taken over by his emotions, but for some reason he was kept alive, in captivity and under watch by the dragon king himself. As Viren, he has a good heart underneath, though crimes may not be forgotten and I feel as if thats gonna be Virens death. But Aaravos? I don't know, he seems so important to Xadias history and fate. Nobody is truly evil in this story, if you notice the pattern. It is an eternal war for survival, freedom and peace. An act and then revenge. I hope he comes to his senses at the end and finds his own peace, I do not wish for him to die even though many in the story would probably have it rather that way.

My own wild guess as to Aravos's goal is that after mastering all the forms of magic he became convinced that there was another unknown primal source and while trying to discover it he became interested in humanity because of their apparent lack of connection to any known primal source. So ultimately Aravos's true goal is to facilitate some human mage becoming the first Necromancer to tap the Death source so he can learn a completely new form of magic.

Aaravos is such an intriguing character with a lot of potential, so I'm excited to learn more about him. What we've learned from different tidbits of lore and interviews over the years suggests to me that the creators have had a grand plan for him and for the mythology of the series since the beginning. The question is, did the Startouch Elves cast him out because he did something truly terrible, or was it something they just didn't like? It's suggested that Ziard, the human mage killed by Sol Regem, was a part of Aaravos's plan, before he was placed in his prison. But what happened that was so BAD for Aaravos to decide that he's going to add fuel to the conflict between Xadia and humans, and bring ruin to his own people? Did he always have a dark heart, or did circumstances turn him bitter and cold?

As far as i can tell he was just power hungry and obsessed with gaining more power. He was jealous of the humans ability to freely link with the elements while magical beings could not, and may or may not have engineered the deaths and erasure of knowledge of the human archmages (as he's 3 thousand years older than the next oldest character we know of), and likely discovered Dark Magic in the process of trying to figure out a way to link all the sources within himself. He also wanted the Unicorns gone as they were the only other known star-touched creatures aside for the Star Elves (Star Magic can warp reality itself and also see the future and bunch of other stuff, so it's dangerous to have that in the hands of creatures who like to meddle for sake of the downtrodden). And used (or even potentially incited) the 1st Mage War that broke out over the Source Stones to turn humanity against the Unicorns, and taught them Dark Magic and gave them tools to aide them. Unclear exactly what he wanted after linking the sources, but he's now probably trying to internalize all the powers of the Primal Sources and become a functional god, and probably intended to use the humans as fodder to fight the other magical races but his cover was blown before he could properly make his moves. If he hadn't been imprisoned, it's likely the 2nd Mage War that broke out after the Exile wouldn't have occurred with Aavaros present to keep them all in line and lead them. (the 2nd Mage war nearly lead to humanity's extinction and absolutely destroyed the Western Lands (which is why life is so hard there now and everything is such a shit hole barely hanging on). Given how much damage they did to the Sun Elves even in such a diminished state, it's interesting to ponder what sort of damage the original Human forces would've done had they not consumed themselves and all their resources fighting over the lands in the west for the last several centuries.

My heart is set on the idea that Aaravos is the reason humans found dark magic and he wanted that rift between humanity and Xadia. New trailers for S4 show that he has been manipulating the politics of the human kingdoms and Xadia for a long time. What I can't figure out is why. His methods seem to loosely reminisce the divide and conquer war tactic but other than raw manpower, I cannot fathom *why* he would want the two lands separated, since Xadia is clearly the bigger threat to him since only magic can really beat magic, which Elves and Archdragons seem to have a lot of.

Personally can I say that as one of it's functions. The key might be able to allow for creatures to connect to a primal source. In a similar way that Callum did. But. It isn't instant and takes concentration and the ability to focus on understanding that primal source. I actually think that Aaravos actually created this as a channel for the various primal sources but didn't work like a primal stone like he intended. But instead allowed for a mild connection that with patience and consistent focus. Allowed for a person born without that connection to connect to the source and the Aaravos used that to connect himself to the various sources. This is also why it responds to the various sources in other creatures. It is designed to channel that power so of course it all works together as focus of the primal sources. It is the KEY to the primal sources within us and other's and it understands and wants to channel that. In Calum or Calem's dream whne he connected to the primal source of the sky, it showed itself promenently in that dream. And if anything I believe that if used properly can allow for the consistent and conjuctive use of various sources together. Now I don't think this is nearly as likely but why was Aarvaros sealed away? That is someothing that I think to many people forget about. There is no explanation about who or why? And how does the key work in this. Well I think that the key actually was used by various mages together to seal him away and remove him from all of the world. giving him no direct control over any of the sources which is why he can only channel the source through viran. Not in his world not that we have seen this suppported overall but I think it could be likely. Anyway all of this is just a theory anyway. Although I don't demean Calum's gaining his primal source and I would love a natural way or form to bond with the primal source or maybe in a nexus but still it is just a theory. But also I think that this definitely work. The thing is that maybe all creatures could bond to the arcanum and that some people have more affinity for it then others? Maybe that's why Callum is the only person known to have bonded with a source as human. I think that to bond to a source that you need one or more of these various things before gaining the understanding and properly bonding. - Affinity with the sources - Magical heritage - Key of Aaravos - Experience of magic that causes the realisation There may be more but I think that you need one or more of these to be able to connect to the primal arcanum and use magic. The more of these you experience the more likely you have a chance to bond to that arcanum. I think it is also plausable that dark magic actually opens these "Gates" inside of you to these arcanums and allows for these connections but forces the channeling of it. And Callum rejecting it and the key of Aarvaros channeling the sky arcanum allowed him to finally to connect properly thorugh his own self determinism. Once again just a theory.

To me, he will always be Elvington the Evil. He's literally the devil, if he was an elf. Right down to being a being of light as a startouch elf, making Faustian bargains, possessing supreme intellect and power, charismatic, deceptive, and access to creepy forbidden magic. I have no idea where all this information is coming from but it makes perfect sense. So he's manipulating Viren into stamping out Xaidia to get his revenge. I also wonder if the mirror isn't an allegory for the internal division of human nature between light and darkness: When Callum used dark magic, his mind fragmented and part of him felt drawn to the impulse of dark magic, but this clashed with his ego. This reckless shadowy side was not destroyed and instead manifested as a new determination to learn primal magic in spite of what he was told. In a similar fashion, Aaravos could represent not only the personal, but the absolute evil within all beings that Viren has stumbled upon through his arcane practices. This evil being the dark aspect of the Self. At first, the mirror protects Viren from Aaravos' influence. He does not listen because what he finds feels alien and external to his own personality. But, ever wily and cunning, the spirit Mercurius, in it's poisonous latent state, convinces Viren that he is but a "servant," and rapidly asserts more and more control. If it were not already apparent that the elf was pulling the strings, his means of doing so was a star-patterned silkworm, apt for spinning lies. The ritualistic imitation of Aaravos', or the unconscious, side of the mirror signals that Viren is coming to identify himself with the archetype and thus come under it's sway. It's interesting to think that Viren trusted this figure at all given that he was an elf, perhaps further suggesting a thematic connection... There are also interesting parallels between Aavaros and Callum. Callum has reached the apparently unheard of understanding that all living beings whatsoever are capable of tapping into the primal sources and performing magic, though he hasn't quite hit on the reason for this, which Avaros will perhaps expound on at a later date. The reason is that, like faces of the the cube Callum now holds, the primal sources are each facets of a singular whole. There is no differentiation between them at all. To see that oneself *is* the primal source is to have mastered magic in it's totality. Contrary to what is believed, elves are not gifted with magic but rather deprived of it's wholeness: "I am a moonshadow elf. I am one with the moon, but nothing else. The rest is other from me, independent, and possibly hostile." Humans, likewise, are born into the illusion that they are separate from magic. Solar and lunar magic are of no use in dispelling these illusions because the sense that the two aspects of magic are different energies perpetuates it. (This is why Viren's spells couldn't reveal anything about the mirror, since it is symbolically the division between the conscious and the unconscious.) Dark magic, in practice, is the magic of spaces as opposed to solids. Rather than tapping in to extant energies, dark mages displace it (completely ignoring that their capacity to pull on the energies of living beings demonstrates their interrelations with them.) The deprived lifeforms are thereby rendered null and dead. But even this magic is not truly evil in any moral sense. The show does a good job of showing on the political level in that Xaidia is not exempt from fault; despite being allied to nature, it is not so simple that elf is right and man is wrong. It is their mutual squabbling and ignorance that generates conflict. Likewise on the metaphysical level, a mage could work evil with primal magic, while there have been many occasions where dark magic has been used selflessly, like in healing Sorren's paralysis. Dark magic is dirty and inclines itself to misuse, but even good has to cut corners. It is in understanding the nature of darkness that Callum found the inner light of the primal energy; that he didn't have to displace the energy of the universe because it was already inside him. In other areas, as the principle distinction between elves and humans, dark magic also seems to be analogous to technology in the way humanity has to pay for "making things easier." Just like the transactions of the spells themselves, every gain for the dark mages is a loss for Xadia's magical ecosystem.

1:08 that is not Aaravos diferent horns and diferent tattos. Probably that group are the "kings/leaders" of they race. But taking that in consideration that implied that Earthblood Elves and Tidebound Elves, maybe they don't take part in the exile of humans, or simple they are more conected with the world and don't care about "politics". One thing is sure the Sunfire Elves where the ones leading the exile.

I think the humans are victims but they let hate turn into greed and not strength which leads to them being pictured as the evil. Even aravos knows patience in the fight scene when aravos helps Viren fight off the guards he told him to stop but Viren's greed wanted him to continue and would get him killed

It’s because he was. He has been there since the start of time. He is not really your standard villain either. He not only talks about the show like it’s a show but kinda hints towards a bigger picture we have not been told. In the very beginning of the first episode of the show you can see his hands and the table is the same wood as the table in his “prison”.
