There was a theory floating around that links Momo to the Lemur elder spirit we see in Avatar Wan's time. (Legend of Korra). It was said that the Lemur Spirit who became best friends with Avatar Wan did not know about Avatar Wan's death. Thus he went out of the spirit realm and into the physical realm which resulted in him giving away his immortality (like the koi spirit in the northern water tribe), to 'look for his pal'. Somehow he ended up becoming friends that transcend lifetimes. That is why when Aang came back to the air temple after 100 years, the first animal that came to him and was overly friendly with him was a lemur. Because technically that is the same Lemur Spirit that was friends with Avatar Wan.
