I don't remember exactly, but if I'm not mistaken: The songs were made for someone singing at a higher pitch, when he was choosen they didn't have time to change the tone. Furthermore, Zac was also on another simultaneous project.

Zac was a teenager and his voice was still mutating. He literally couldn't sing most of the songs, plus Drew sang demos, I believe, so it was just an easier way to go. It was a TV movie, anyway, so no one cared at the time.

This was great! As a person that grew up with all three high school musicals, this makes me so happy! You did a phenomenal job and even though the ai parts make him sound more mature than he does in the first movie, it fits so smoothly! It really felt like listening to Zac Efron singing. I heard Drew was originally cast to be Troy Bolton and recorded all the songs before they shot the movie. But then something happened and when Zac efron took over, they didn’t have the budget or didn’t want to take the time to re-record all the songs and just went with Drew’s voice over instead.
