Common swift (Apus apus) is an unusual bird, after watching the video you will see why it is so special. It can be said that it is the king of all birds. Visually close to a swallow, it has very little to do with it. It is larger, has a brown-black color, crescent-shaped wings, and a characteristic, forked tail. However, it is not his appearance but his lifestyle that makes him unusual.
swift
King of the skies
The Swift is the king of all birds when it comes to endurance in flight. This bird is very fast. It can leave the nest at a speed of 70 km per hour and, diving in the air, reaches a speed of 220 km per hour. This is much higher than the speed limit for cars on highways. Its long-distance flights, one of its major characteristics, stop only during the breeding season, when it looks after its chicks and stays less often in the air. Apart from this period, summer is practically non-stop. "Without interruption" can be safely taken as a literal term, because the Swift can stay in the air continuously for up to 200 days. The record time without landing was 10 months; a completely unlikely result. How can Swifts cope with hunger and fatigue in the air?
Swifts belong to the group of migratory birds. They live in southern Africa in winter and the breeding season, which falls from March to June, is found in Europe and parts of Asia.
Canteen under the clouds
Swifts feed on small flying insects, catching them in flight. Their menu includes mosquitoes, beetles, small species of butterflies and flies...

For context, I live near a colony and they dive through the air like dolphin through water. When their young finally fly with them, they just fly in between the narrow streets with maximum speed and in a 3 or 4 bird formation, that don't changes, despite speed and manuvers... Its just wow when they fly past your open window, like 2 meter away from your head.

I've never heard of them before, Never. But they live in my area i thought it was swallows considering the similarities. This morning one was on my balcony and couldn't fly out of it, The walls on my balcony aren't short enough not to mention their short legs. So i helped it out although it was really in a hurry to get out of there, Im surprised it didn't try to peck me or make any loud noises but it flew off happy once i got it high enough on the balcony such a majestic looking bird. I made sure it was alright beforehand.

They are my favourite bird. I used to live in the south of Spain but now in the south of England. There are none here. I have put up a swift box high on a north wall and hope they will nest here.

Today was my last day at my university. We have flocks of them constantly in flight everywhere on campus. Sometimes I stop to watch them and wonder at how they never seem to land. So today I did just that then decided to google if they ever do land and here I am watching this video! I certainly hope I get to see one up close someday. Their calls during sunset are also very unique, I just love hearing them and knowing it will be dark soon.

Amazing creature, the swift. When I first learned at school about them sleeping on the wing, I couldn't believe it. For some reason, even the fact they can stay in the air for months at a time, didn't blow me away as much as sleeping while in flight. They'll soon be arriving in the outhouse in my backyard, together with the swallows and house martins, which to me is the sign the summer is finally on its way!

i've saved three alpine swifts so far, i've collected them all from the ground, two adults and a not so ready to fly chick, fortunately none of them were hurt. the chick was able to get back to its flock after 2 weeks, and the adults got 1-2 days of rest. i hope they're doing fine. i'm an expert, but if you ever get to spot one on the ground, *do not* proceed to raise it and take it to an animal rehab *immediately* . do not forget that they're wild animals, they belong to the skies.

@@MyNamesUnavailable well you should take it to the nearest animal rehab, if it's still alive. otherwise you have to feed it yourself- you need to open its beak and *carefully* put a small, easy to swallow piece of food inside. i recommend wet cat food (basically kibbles- you can leave them in lukewarm water for a while until they get a bit mushier), boiled eggs, minced meat etc. make sure it doesn't choke on them, though. remember, finding an animal rehabilitator or even a vet would be the best option. also i must add, if you're certain that the bird is capable of flying on its own, i mean if it is an uninjured, healthy adult, you can release it (with caution) from a high ground, such as a building that is not *too* high, you know, just in case. that is because of their crescent-shaped wings, they don't allow them to take off from the ground like most birds. that's why they never land, because if they do... anyway, best of luck friend. i hope it's doing better now!

The swift can also be found in the Pacific Northwest of the United States as an invasive species. Which is strange since it can fly such large distances.

@@johnyoung5687 I was mistaken they are Vaux's Swifts and a few other types depending on the year. There is an old school in Portland called Chapman Elementary where they roost in an old boiler stack flock in high numbers as part of their migration. Attracts all kinds of predatory birds. I had in my mind that they were invasive but that's another bird altogether.

4:34 people who have seen swifts up close may consider themselves lucky. After all it is not common to associate face to face with a king.. Then I must say,me and my family are lucky because there's a baby swift in our home from the past week or above. Writing this from Hyderabad, India, Asia. (Gave a detailed location coz I just learnt from your video that they migrate to Europe and Asia . We found the bird on 15th of May, (summer) on the stairs of our apartment. It was a small bird (baby I suppose). We gave it water through a dropper. In fact we didn't even know what bird it was and only after some googling we found it was a swift. The first two days we fed it only water at times. It was little energised. Eben After learning that it eats insects,we could not provide it because we had no insects here. And moreover we weren't sure if it can digest Coz babies are usually Fed by mothers partially digested food. We have been giving it some grains of boiled rice and boiled egg white. I even gave it black ants from our balcony which were about 7mm It always seems hungry, whenever we pass beside it, it comes closer to us and opens mouth. Any suggestions on what to feed it? Can I feed live worms(if so what should be the size of the worm) in how many days will it be able to fly. Anyone who had any idea can reply.
