When I listen to joe addressing this issue, I giggled because I live in a multiracial country and chinese is one of them. Even the chinese in my country are very superstitious with number 4. Especially if they are running a business. If you have an apartment building, the floors will be numbered like these: 1, 2, 3, 3A, 5 and so on. For their car plate number, they'd rather pay thousands to have customized number than having the number 4 in it. While number 8 is considered to bring in wealth. I respect their custom and enjoy their new year festivals a lot. Just find it a bit weird about the numbers.

I knew about the tattoo thing before I went to Japan, so I knew I couldn't go into certain places... but I still got caught out by it. I wore a singlet shirt to my hotel's gym for a workout (as you do) and got asked to change into a shirt that covers it. I don't begrudge it (i.e. not my place to tell other cultures how to live, so in their country I play by their rules), but you can't help but find it a little frustrating considering I'm Pacific Islander and it's legitimately cultural for us to have tattoos (i.e. the word literally comes from our languages).

There is still place that I would rather be bare feet like my own room, but keeping even a single room's floor flawless while bare feet is difficult, I have to sweep up or vacuum almost every other day to keep my bathroom and own room free of dust and hair and other random shit that happens to fall onto the ground that wasn't from my feet.

I paused and read the sign Joey flashed up about vloggers at bath houses and it looks like that specific one might make exceptions for visiting athletes. In personal experience, when I visited japan on a college trip, we stayed at a hotel that had an onsen in Sendai and they were very accommodating to us with tattoos. Basically they asked that we go later at night or earlier in the morning during off hours and we could stay as long as no one complained. Ended up working out great and the two Japanese ladies we met when we were in the onsen were very nice to us, regardless of tattoos.

It was a big exaggeration. It's usually used to show respect to elders/people higher in the hierarchy you're in. For instance, when meeting new people, you would adress them politely (or at least more politely than with friends). They have different levels of "politeness" or formality based on context which is why there are different types of formal Japanese.

One of the things stopping me from moving to japan (I don't want to move there because of anime, I genuinely love the country, the food, the culture) is the whole tattoo yakuza thing. I've grown up around tattoos, my godfather is a tattoo artist and I had an apprenticeship with him in Scotland. I have two tattoos of my own (a small explosion behind my ear and a snake by my right ring finger). I'm planning on getting more, like the silhouette of a dragon on my back and the 00:00:00 from Unus Annus. Unless this rule (is that the right word, idk) is abolished in bathhouses etc or at the very least, us foreigners are exempt, I don't think I can move there.

when i lived in korea, i experienced 60% of this. because at some point, japan invaded korea and left an impression on how society works and korea tweaked it in their own evil ways. yeah, i can totally relate to this. for example, why the hell do i have to go to cram school? it's not that i don't agree with cram school but the problem is that we have to go monday through saturday after school until 10 or sometimes even 11 at night to go home to sleep and go to school all over again. not to mention the fact that we pay for school in korea unlike here in the states. so that means, we pay to go get educated by teachers who gets payed by the government and the parents and then with some unknown donation and we have to pay to go to some cram school. like wtf, don't we deserve a hobby or youth? it's also not cheap to go to school. unless you are going to trade middle, high and college learning how to operate farming machinery or factories along with basic stuff for language arts, math, history and science. if your parents can't afford to get you in a good school, guess what, society treats you accordingly until you are able to "pay" to go to a better college to learn something else. most koreans can't afford to do so. you are either super smart to begin with or get left behind if your family is poor. when i say poor, i mean bottom of the middle class. that's right, some of the kids will have a difficult time actually going to school at all. here in america, they hunt you down to make you go which is obviously the right thing to do. but there, if you can't pay, then whatever. i used to go to cram school in korea but for a brief moment. i went to korea during 10th grade and was trying to go to school there. they wouldn't accept me and said "our school is currently full sorry" the following week, a japanese girl was allowed to go to that same school... i'm korean american and i'm fluent in korean so i'm pretty sure if they allowed me to go to their school, i'd fit right in. i was ultimately not able to go to school at all but in the mean time, i went to cram school in the afternoon(morning was my free time until 4) learning korean math(one way to solve or else!). it wasn't very fun for me. i love math and always try to learn it on my own now but damn korea, wtf... here, we can solve the same equation in at least 2 different ways and choose what works for us. i'd say i'm pretty fluent in math but every time i solved them and got it right my way, they gave me a 0. i'm sorry korea but i'm not gonna budge from where i stand. eventually, i half-assed the solving portion their way to make them think i'm improving on something i already knew how to do. i got really bored. then, they put me in science. i consider myself decent in it but to them, once again, my way is wrong. how is it wrong? i come up with the same answer again in a different way so they're the weird ones. i took korean language arts and that one was hard for all the right reasons(i lived in the states prior). korean history is too long to try to comprehend but i managed because i was always interested in ancient korean wars as a kid. they somehow convinced me to take the english quiz, i got 60% but when you look at the answers, they were actually grammatically more correct than what they use. their way make you sound like you are really trying to show how you "just learned" english. they didn't even give me the previous material to look over so that was also a factor. when i saw the actual answers, all i could say was "good luck using that internationally..." yes, i actually said that to them. it's like this, in a normal english class, we learn what we call "synonyms and antonyms" they apparently don't do that. they just memorize 1 or 2 words that mean the same thing and just use them over and over all the way through middle and high school(korean celebs and politicians are an exception to this). while it's true that they learn their subjects in a more accelerated pace, it's more like memorizing rather than understanding why it is what it is. that's a very unhealthy way of learning. fun fact, they learn multiplication at 1st grade! they even have a song for it. do you know what the number one thing they struggle with as they become teenagers is? it's adding and subtracting. that's right, the very first thing they should know how to do like the back of their hands is their weakness. i'm not saying 1+1, i'm saying really big numbers and really tedious decimals. they have a harder time adding those than us. it's a very important thing for jobs involving large quantity of things but hey, if you multiply them, the'll get it right. now, i'm aware that this doesn't apply to everyone(if it did, then oh boy. they are so~ screwed) but the fact that a very large amount of the population is that way is bad. if you watch some talent show type korean shows, there are students adding really big numbers back to back. i rolled my eyes because big "whoopty doo~" so he can add. someone give him a cookie, he deserves it. it's all in order to go to college. we do our best to get in the best college here with sat's and act's but it's rather easy to get in to college and difficult to graduate. they try so hard to get in and most likely fail until one day, they finally meet the requirements but graduating, oh that's a cake-walk compared to here. if it's that easy to graduate college, why go at all? and a lot of koreans in their 20's are currently thinking just that. if you follow korean youtubers you'll probably notice that all of a sudden, there's a bunch of late teens to early 20's korean youtubers that appeared out of nowhere. that's why they are here. to make money in a different, less stressful environment. man, this is long but hey, now you know.

We have to take off our shoes and put on indoor shoes at the school that I teach at in Japan. Of course, it was originally to keep the inside of the building clean, but often times, if you have to go outside to do something (e.g. take out a trash bag, etc.) everyone just leaves on their indoor shoes for a few minutes. Then, tell me, what tf is the point?! There are also waaaaay too many Japanese people who still subscribe to ridiculous superstitions, for example, that you can die from sleeping near a fan that is turned on. You can see a lot of advertisements for "books" about how to improve your luck and how blood types act like zodiac signs or something stupid like that. And every celebrity has to reveal their blood type to show what kind of person they are. Also, the low-key nationalism really pisses me off sometimes. Japanese children sometimes develop very strange world-views that especially hate on other Asian countries. They can get that from their parents (usually fathers) and more subtly from the media, that never shuts up about how great Japan is. This leads some to refer to themselves as "pure Japanese" to differentiate themselves (in a positive way) from half-Japanese, etc. I know a Western guy who is married to a Japanese woman, and so many kids at school are shocked when they hear that. They just can't conceive of a non-Japanese person being married to a "pure" Japanese person. And even more enlightened kids talk about how immigrants are bad because it "dilutes the culture." Japan also has a middle child complex. They have to be noticed by other, more powerful countries to boost its self-esteem. And sometimes, they'll just commandeer the success of someone from another country just because they have a Japanese name. Naomi Osaka and Kuzuo Ishiguro were suddenly all over the place once they became internationally recognized. And they were practically seen as Japanese despite the fact that they actually lived in other countries. And they will rarely change any big social issue in their own country unless it receives international backlash. The country itself really takes "notice me senpai" to a new level. Those were just some other things I wanted to add from my experience. But I also agree with everything else in this video. Japan is a super frustrating place to live for foreigners and it often makes you want to bang your head against a wall.

It’s more for the sake of keeping dirt and other things that’s caught under your shoes out but also because it’s just something that’s a part of the culture here. It is pretty common to keep them on depending on what job you have though, but than again that is outside of your home.

Same in Macedonia. I don't know about other people, but I've been taught to take my shoes off when entering someone's home or at my home. I rarely keep my shoes on when entering someone else's home, usually when the home I'm entering asks me to not take my shoes off.

The weird cultural thing I will never understand from The States is tipping the waiter/waitress. Just pay your employee the full amount. why must the costumer have to be in charge of paying them for partial amounts of their pay checks? If it was not so culturally ingrained. We would see how cheap and unprofessional it is.

If we don't tip here in the US, it means the server can't pay rent. It's a business practice left over from prohibition era restaurants screwing over their employees super hard in order to make up for the profits lost from the criminalization of alcohol. And because businesses only ever care about money, most restaurants/bars/etc still pay far below minimum wage for servers, bartenders, and bussers. I've done tipped labor and I honestly hated how my workplace was forcing the people paying for my service to also pay my wages. Just one bad night means you can't pay rent for the month and it's truly disgusting. The history of it makes it apparent it's unethical but most businesses won't budge.

the worst part is, it's a cycle. the owner doesn't have to pay minumum wage because they get tips, so you have to give them tips because they don't make minum wage. if we just get rid of the minumum wage exepmtion because of tips, everyone will benifit, and tips will because a bonus not a nessisary onligation. (it gets a little tricky when talking about small buisnesses, but with large chain companies there is littrally no escuse)

I mean to be fair: the customer is always effectively paying the waiters check, because all of a restaurants money comes from their customers. On a purely conseptual level tips effectively being part of your wage should incourage waiters to make sure the customer is happy and feels well treated and thus gives a bigger tip - variable wages that depend on how well your department performed aren't uncommon at least in manager positions. The big problem with tips is that it allows restaurants (mostly in the US) to pay less than minimum wage to waiters and thus the customer doesn't really decide on the amount they tip based on the service, but instead are efectively forced to pay a certain amount no matter what. And also people are cheap by nature and only few people actually reward very good service with larger tips.

It’s not weird. With tipping, you get to tell the waiter or waitress in no uncertain terms what a good job they did - or conversely, what a crappy job they did. We should be able to tip the chefs too, if you ask me. That way, if the food sucks, you can let ‘em know with a penny’s worth of your thoughts.

My cousin has a chronic illness that makes walking very difficult and painful. She loved going to Japan but found the lack of benches very frustrating and felt it showed a lack of awareness towards disabled people. I've watched a lot of vlogs about Japan and also have issues with walking, I'm also covered in tattoos and a 'big' girl, I don't think I'd do well in Japan 😣

Work culture is actually the reason, why I don't want to live in Japan, even I if I have a chance in future. The country is great, but I hate the idea of trading my 8-hour work day and 26-days paid annual leave for overworking, lack of holidays and forced nomikais. Japanese people should learn the word work-life balance.

It's pressure on the newcomers that if they don't, they'll be looked down upon either by the boss or by their seniors, and becomes something of a rite of passage, and as such, while it isn't technically forced, there are consequences for not doing it, as it can stunt career advancement.

So I get why they'd want to wear shoes in someone elses house. But if it's your own house, aren't socks enough? I don't know, it just feels weird to me, as someone who spends 80% of their time barefoot.
