As 17 year olds a couple of friends and I started a band here in rural Germany, mainly covering Charlatans songs. "Then" was among the tracks and I played the hammond organ on it. Years later our guitarist, who had stopped making music to become a medical doctor was hanging out in a hotel bar after a congress on radiology. He got into a conversation with a lad from England and told him he thought British music was great. So the guy said: Oh yes? Which bands do you like? He replied: The Charlatans. All of a sudden all heads at the bar turned to him, saying: We are the Charlatans! He couldn’t believe it. They met each other at that bar three nights in a row and Mark Collins got him tickets for a show several months later in Düsseldorf.

Followed and been to Charlatans gigs, and now my son is a Charlatans fan, took him to gigs as well. Transcending generations with sound and meaning and poet lyrics. ❤The Charlatans ❤

Hypnotic, rhythmically beautiful and lyrically brilliant. This whole album was/is so solid all the way through every track. In the early 90s while we were being bombed with Grunge (not at all a bad thing!) and the beginning of the end for good Hip Hop/Rap (a very bad thing), this band had an extraordinary way of making me want more at the end of every song. Nothing could really compare to the Manchester sound of the early 90s. A very special time to be young and hearing this band!

My favorite album of all time is "Some Friendly" by this band , the Charlatans U.K. I could not wait for this LP to come out back in early October 1990 since I bought the CD single import for "The Only One I Know" 2 months prior and hearing their 2nd single "Then" on the radio for the past month. It had such an impact on me like no other album. What a trip...I would play the entire CD religiously for the next year. Definitely a rebirth of 60's-type psychedelia for me and a whole lot of others at that time... this was THE BAND for me.
@rayanthony74638 жыл бұрын
Thank you TW, I actually still have all those CD's from back then except Northside. I do have The Darkside "All that Noise" w/the songs "Waiting for the angels" & "Guitar voodoo", rest of the album is kind of lame. I think that's awesome that quite a few of your gen can appreciate 90's alternative bands, speaking a few are making comebacks this past year(Slow Dive, Lush, Stone Roses, Verruca Salt, Kula Shaker) I still listen to collage radio (88.9 WMCX) even today because there is no better format of music that always keeps me young at heart. Whether it's early artist like Bowie,Velvet Underground, Ramones to current bands like Alt J, Wolf Alice, Phantagraham, at least it's not typical top 40 format. Cool pic of yer band by the way...Rock On.

RIP Martin Duffy. An incredible and iconic sound on all of The Charlatans albums.
@tomdusick8511 Жыл бұрын
Duffy was only a touring keyboardist mid to late 90s. This is the legendary Rob Collins on Hammond organ (rest his soul), he played on first 4 albums and most of Tellin' Stories before he was tragically killed. Tony Rogers has been their keyboardist since Robs' passing. Only saw them once before Rob died, 4 times with Tony. Both are excellent keyboardists without a doubt.

This takes me back to the Autumn of 1990; cold and wet days, listening to this fab song from the album 'Some Friendly', brilliant stuff. The video has that low-budget, student film feel that was so prevalent in this period on programmes like MTV's 120 minutes. What a great legacy as a band. Their whole 90s period was fantastic and beyond.
