When I started graffiti, the people that were good never helped me cause I was a toy. I had to do graffiti with friends that were toys or people that didn’t even get up. But then when I turned 18 my parents let me write in the backyard and that’s when I started to meet people with better skill cause they wanted to come over and practice without worrying about the cops.

I was walking home from my train and I was Havoc (HVC) writing broad day over an old throwie he did someone beefed on. I was star struck and was like "yo havoc I fuck with you" or something to that extent. Instead of being a dick, this all city writer and his two friends were gassed that I even said anything and they tagged an old no parking sign for me to put on my wall. Perfect example of it. He saw a random kid appreciate him and was appreciative back.

i just started and was in the books for quite a while, so one day i picked up a can and went out and by a total mistake went over a crew tag with a throwie, the next day i got threts that if it happens again that imm done. So that was quite cool.

The positive side to graffiti for me is it gave me something to do when I needed to occupy myself during hard times. There haven’t been a horrible amount of negatives yet but, one time I saved a guys life for him to then shatter my windshield. Fun

Bro im 31 and still destroy every bridge, wall, sign, billboards, anything I can get my name up lol the graff community is unlike any other culture out there, met people when I was 11 who I still talk and write with, also meet people to this day that ask me to go bombing with. Been Graffiting for 8 years now meet a dude graffin for a year and I've now been taking him out with me and teaching him how to evolve his style and techniques. He also said how come I'm so chill about it. I said I too was once a toy and had to learn on my own plus I enjoy watching you progress within a month he's already running more tidy tags and throwies 🤙

As someone who started in art and lettering, before transitioning to graff and piecing. My first genuine interaction with a writer was when I found out one of my many cousins was a writer. We actually became closer as family through that connection. My second official interaction with genuine writers, was through Deviantart. I met this cat (KAD) who's younger than me and we got to talking. It turned he's from the same town as me and ran with a crew of writers (KATS) that were getting up in all the hot spots. Somehow a year and a half later, they invited me to be a part of a Graffiti and street art themed show at a gallery. Since then I've valued the positive interactions over the negatives. Yes, I've dealt with the gang taggers. Who have no qualms about a beat down if you're bold enough to go over/cross out their ish. Since I've gotten my own wall and the social distancing it's been more isolating in experience. But. Like you Jon I used to be a smart-ass- I still am. I am doing better in responding and engaging positively.

I met 2 of my best friends through graffiti in high school. It was an ice breaker for conversation, really chill dudes and 16 years later I'm still good friends with them today. On the other side of that I met writers that were very disrespectful and ignorant to the unspoken rules as well as form and quality. We truly are all just different people when it comes down to it ❤

I’ve only ever been dissed by someone online. My local graffiti shop is really chill and the staff are friendly. I once went over a piece with ‘toy’ but it was one of the ones I had painted that I didn’t think was very good 😂haha! I find the main negativity comes from random people spouting- graffiti is illegal- and having a go at you whilst painting.

Graf is a full contact sport if you want to... beef build you skills, it is also foolish. We all want to get up, we all want a wall. I made really good friends by beef and being nice. Internet corrupted all beef. Made it to easy and ruined the concept of respect..... Make that sink in.... Being nice gets you further in graf and life

im a graffiti writer from israel and the scene here isnt so big but there is a lot of skill and a lot of graffiti in the country i never encountered negativity in our commiunity in all my time as a writer it seems like here in israel every1 likes every1 and there is no toxicity at all

lol ya know, i can understand that. while i feel like iv met plenty of nice people the past year or two (and a few back in the day) i've certainly met 5x more obnoxious rude writers. In my experience, the ones who's only personality trait is being a writer, or those hard-core bombers are the ones i stay away from, too annoying, too ego driven.

I have not had any bad experiences, but I have also kept to myself. I feel as if I cant interact with the community, because I am a trans woman writer. I have already seen how a lot of this scene treats women, let alone trans women. In that respect I like the anonymity that comes with just being just a name on a wall, because if they knew who wrote it, my work would be dismissed.

what does trans have to do with being a writer, there's no need to introduce yourself as a trans writer, you're just a writer like all the rest of us. You fit right in, so there's no need to depict yourself as a trans writer. To be straightforward and not beat around the bush, being trans is irrelevant in graffiti. In all my years doing graffiti, i've NEVER seen anyone show hate to any other group of people, graffiti artists don't care, they just want to paint. Also, Graffiti rolls out the red carpet for women. If you're a lady in graffiti then literally every door opens up for you just for you existing. I've seen this all the way from toys to legends that do this so all your fears of getting into the community are misplaced. Any decent human being gets along well in graffiti, regardless of what's between their legs, and regardless of skin color, hell even disabled people, ( there's a 1 arm graffiti legend for example), doesn't matter, decent humans are all welcome, that's all that counts.

@@Theartistblock i don't think this is necessarily true, ladyk for example is a writer i love, however i have seen so many comments that are sexist, and would never happen to a man. I do not have to introduce myself as a trans writer but if people find out, it changes their perception of me, in all aspects of daily life, not just writing. The only doors that open up for women are fetishization, and sexism.

Theirs pros and cons to everything in life that's how it works. Men and women both have struggles and benefits in graffiti, for example men get jumped more in graffiti, less access to walls and crews with higher conditions to get in, lady pink even talks about how easy it was to move up in the scene specifically because she was a girl and people treated her nice, youre less suspicious as well and get away with more, claw speaks about this, ladies get compliments on their work even if it's lower quality more than men and I mean the list goes on and on. Both have struggles the other doesn't and benefits the other doesn't, my point is just that all decent people in graffiti have an easy time regardless of what you are. If you're just a chill, kind person then you get lots of benefits simply because people like to be around you. Graffiti is flooded with outcasts and people who feel they don't fit in, youre not unique in this, you're hardly the first trans in graffiti, iv spoke to plenty here on YT who love being in the community so I know there's a place for you if they fit in. In short, I'd worry less about what you are, and what people think and worry more about being good at graffiti and being kind to people ( not saying you're not) because if you are then you don't have anything to worry about 👍
