In the second part of our series on understanding modern art we explore the work and ideas of Edouard Manet, another French painter who is considered a turning point between traditional and modern art. Manet's work depicted the Paris of his times in a candid fashion, and his ideas would have knock on effects for the artists who came after him. As we follow on from our video on Cézanne, this essay on Manet shows some of the differences and similarities between the two and their influential work. These French painters and their work are a great case study for understanding what modern art is and how it came to be.

The Arts Hole Is a channel devoted to exploring questions about art. We make videos that cover a variety of topics within the arts and try to explain them in as straight forward a fashion as possible. If your vaguely interested in things like painting, sculpture, art history, criticism, critical theory or other high falutin topics stick around. I'll be uploading videos on various topics each week. The main goal of all this extra work I'm making for myself is to help both you and me gain a better understanding of these complex topics and maybe, eventually come to some sort of understanding about modern and contemporary art.

About the composition of "Luncheon on the Grass", I found in my textbook that the composition was copied from part of Marcantionio Raimondi's "The Judgement of Paris". In the bottom right corner of the piece you can see the three figures in the exact same position. Video is still very informative and excellent though!

That's some good stuff, I didn't come across that myself but after checking it out it definitely is the same composition. Apparently Raimondi's engraving came from a drawing that Raphael did for him too, seeing the connections going back centuries is fascinating. Thanks for sharing that!

Monet was gynophobic and racist. All the impressionist were males because in those day women didn't have any options for a better life they had to be wives , maids or prostitutes. All the impressionist die from syphilis they couldn't keep their pants zipped up. I'm glad I'm a woman in the XXI century. Thank you God! The nastiest was Toulouse. Van Gogh was a Dutch gentleman he never disrespect any one and his painting radiate an electrifying energy. He was the best of all impressionists.
@theartshole311

A lot of them we're mad gynophobic racists alright, as was the style at the time. Might be worth doing a quick video looking at some of that, it's interesting to humanise some of these painters rather than deify them. I've heard that Renoir was particularly bad for banging on about how much he hated the Jews, to the point where many other impressionists disliked hanging around with him( not sure how true that is though).

Nah...oranges were always for their color first, because he is a painter...not to symbolize prostitution. Just make up your own ideas and project them onto a painter...this will keep you from understanding them as paintings FIRST, not as sociology or language theory first. Only then will you understand them. But hey...we like words, don't we?
@renzo6490

Yes , these ‘essays’ are uncommonly informative and appealing. The singular form of the word is criterion. Plural is criteria. Salon des refusés.....Salon day ray fooz AY. That’s the closest I can get to the correct pronunciation, Come on narrator. It’s your responsibility to learn to pronounce foreign words correctly if you are going to speak them in your video.

Renzo, thanks for the kind words. I don't like to be rude to people if I can help it, you catch more flies with honey than vinegar as they say. I've been involved with the arts for a while so I've developed a pretty thick skin for criticism, as well as an appreciation of its value. @@theartshole311 It's by Manet of Baudelaire & admittedly it's not bad. However, I bought it to console myself because I owned an original 19th century drawing of Rimbaud, that was thrown away in ignorance = a VERY expensive mistake. As an artist I recommend you Google Jim Overbeck Artist to see my stuff. Have fun.
