Airbrush Color Theory: Transparent vs. Opaque Colors

Gradient can be a ball buster Having just started portraits but only having opaques i tried mixing my black with a clear base carrier like i would for candy's it worked but the binders are pretty strong for erase techniques it does work well enough for practice Good stuff bubba share that knowledge

i hear you man. Black paint is one of the most difficult colors to get even gradients (for me anyway)- gets dark VERY quickly. Try an easier color like sepia or burnt umber. best of luck to you!

I have started with airbrush for about 4 months I have bought many opeque color did not know the difference between transparent and opeque color and after I started to, see your lessons I shifted again to transparent color thanks for your lesseon i know its not that easy to make them cant wait to next week ..❤

This is the best explanation I've ever seen of these different kinds of paints. Now I really do understand how to use both and why they work the way they do. That portrait you're working on is spectacular! I actually gasped when I saw it. Totally stunning and a very high degree of difficulty. You definitely have an excellent artist's eye. Can't wait to see the finished piece and watch the tutorials. The production quality of your videos is superb, especially the airbrush reviews, however in this one some parts seemed a bit dark to me. Was wondering what kind of lighting you use? In one of the Caravaggio's I remember you listed your camera and lens, but just curious as to your lighting setup.

Thank you! Yeah, some parts were a bit too dark. I'm still messing around with lighting and ISO levels, plus audio needs work. I use a Nikon Z5 with the 24-70 f4 lens. That lens is incredible. I love it!

Is it ok to use normal acrylic paint( the one in almost gel form),water based,which is used for artist paint brush,and prepare it for airbrush with thiner or water,or it will clog more because pigments are bigger than in airbrush specific paint

It'll work but it doesn't spray great. I'd recommend trying to get yourself some airbrush paint. So much easier to spay. Best of luck! @@EmersonIvankovic

Thank you so much for doing these videos. You are amazing and the information is a godsend to beginners like me! However, I am confused by something here. At 0.24 minute of the tape you show the bottle of Cobalt Blue Createx Illustration Color Paint -with the logo on it showing “optimized for use with Dru Blair’s color buffer method” and you continue on with saying “which is transparent”. At minute 3:24 you show the same bottle and explain that the marketing term “color buffer method” is used for opaque paint.

Correct. You can make any transparent color opaque by adding an opaque white to it. This is what createx illustration calls buffered colors. Basically they are transparent until white is added, which "buffers" them, making them opaque. Basically, you can buy opaque colors or make your own using transparent colors and white.

Is it possible to paint a lighter color over a darker color where its semi transparent and makes the darker color underneath a little lighter with properties from the top color?

As a newbie to airbrushing, I do have difficulty in controlling the volume of the Createx transparent colours and stopping before they get too dark. For portraits could I use opaque neutral grey as a start point and add colour to it for a base flesh colour that doesn't get darker with more paint and then glaze transparent over the top?

This is the most difficult thing to do with transparent colors. Yes, of course you can start with an opaque base color and use transparents over the top. Many painters only use opaque colors (transparents mixed with opaque white) to make it easier. It works well but for me it's difficult to erase and you get an odd blue gray color shift when you spray lighter opaques over darker values. You just have to find a style that works best for you.

Hey brother mark, in order to get all these different colors in the Iris, Eyes. I’m going to need more then just the Basic. illustration create text colors, right?. Can I mix Golden transparent with Createx illustration colors. I know you had mentioned golden before. I see so many different eye color textures I’m wondering. Am I gonna have to go outside of Createx illustration colors. Golden transparent and create text illustration colors. Can you mix them together? I know I can’t get all the colors I need. Inside of createx illustration so I might. Have to go outside of Createx illustration colors and get some gold transparent colors, and is that Ok. Thank You Please Explain It To Me Please. Hi Michael- hope you are well. Yes, I've been mixing acrylic paint for years and have never had any problems. If you mix golden and createx, you'll notice that the paint is harder to erase than createx alone. But as long as both paints are acrylic (which they are), they'll mix without any issues.
