I volunteered at a shelter for several years. I never failed to amaze me the wonderful dogs that came in. I remember a huge Great Dane that we got and got him a home in Delaware. There was a waiting list for him. Then a friend informed me that two great Danes, mother and son, had been dropped off near them. We contacted the same rescued and took those 2 dogs to them. They had a home immediately and never spent a day at the shelter.

In the states we are progressive compared to half the planet thanks to spay and neuter programs keeping the numbers down but we still euthanize over 700,000 pets per year. It's absolutely mind-boggling when you become involved in rescue and fostering!

Sometimes it is not that they aren't wanted, vet costs and food costs have become prohibitive, nevermind rentals and no dog/cat rules. They are there because someone cared enough not to just let them loose. It is a no win situation currently

Cosmo is the spitting image of our dear old Clyde who we were going to travel around the country with in summer 2020. It was a blessing that we were locked down and missed all of the concerts and camping because Clyde had developed prostate cancer and we were not jolting down the road as he was living his last few months. I always love to see rescue day with Lee's excitement, big smiles and "weeoo's" but the follow up is just as good because there is such a change in the dogs. They arrive nervous, unsure and closed down, tail and ears down.. They ALL change to wagging tails, with tongues lolling out smiling with happiness with the freedom to roam and play. What a gift; you give to them, they give to you and then you give to all of us. Thank you Asher House and thank you happy pups.

One of my senior cats walks similarly, has sacroiliac joint arthritis, there are now monthly injections that can really help. I'm a sucker for the oldsters, already love Theodore with his skinny little wagging tail, so adorable.

Lee, what you and everyone who works with the sanctuary is truly beautiful. Every rescue I see how excited you are from the moment you meet them, even when they aren’t exactly in a meeting mood. Our shelter bought my Sephie more time by putting lab/retriever on her paperwork. She was a year old the day I got her, and with her solid black coat and piercing eyes no one was calling about her. She was mine the moment I saw her pic on the website. I went in ready to pay over 100 bucks and they said they were doing a December deal and gave me her for 10 dollars, I still can’t believe it! For her to get a crate, collar, and lease it was 50 bucks, including her! You can see the bully breed in her, but my landlord can’t say anything if the papers don’t mention pittbull and she also works as a therapy dog for my ptsd. I’m so happy for these dogs, they don’t know it yet, but they are going to have so much fun meeting the pack and going on walks!

I am stunned as well. We have four dogs at home right now (of the six) that were rescued the day they were going to be euthanized. Three came to us from San Antonio, Texas- one is a foster fail, one has been adopted and one is still being "fostered" with us. One is from ACC in New York. All from areas that are high-kill areas. Unfortunately, NH sheltered are restricted from taking in dogs from Texas so I did it alone and took on all the boarding, transporting and vetting costs myself (and one was heartworm positive so technically she was supposed to be allowed in the state). It has been well worth the journey and we have learned a lot for our future rescues- but the infrastructure and, of course, the current economic climate and the resulting flood of unwanted and surrendered animals don't make it easy. I wish more people would just take the challenge to open their hearts and homes to soon-to-be-destroyed animals because it is well worth each sacrifice. Each one has been nothing be appreciative and loving.
