WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

@ Paul Simon McCarthy - Bingo! and the show could be vastly improved if the call screeners started their interaction with callers by saying something like: "Welcome to the AXP… are you calling to speak with our hosts on today's show? OK, what we're looking for is for callers to share with us what they believe, and more importantly WHY they believe it, or how it is they know it's true… so keeping that in mind, can you give me a brief summary of what'd you'd to talk about today?" The call screeners don't have to "get into it" with the callers… they don't even need to address the "quality" of the rationale, they can continue using whatever criteria they have for determining whether the call gets sent to the cue for getting on the air. Callers will understand they are expected to address WHY they believe as they do and will already have had to think about that before they ever get on the air.

@ Thomas Maughan - "And that is why I don't bother to call. I know why I believe and I don't feel a need to persuade anyone." That makes perfect sense, but it does make one wonder why then you'd watch/listen to the show and comment here. Also, what part of whose comment demonstrates bad logic? The OP's point is the majority of theist callers completely ignore the "2nd half" of the CLEAR INSTRUCTION to call in (if they like) and "tell us what you believe & WHY". I would be the 1st to concede perhaps it's a failure on the part of the show's staff (maybe the call screeners) to get that message across, but it seems more likely to me the message is ignored in favor of just wanting to spout off what they believe without offering any rational support for those beliefs.

@@Robert44444444 "it does make one wonder why then you'd watch/listen to the show and comment here." It's fun. Why is anyone here? I'm pedantic. Where else can one participate in rigorous but utterly futile arguments? It is a field filled with strawmen! Bad logic is "every caller". It is unlikely that the writer of that comment is accurately reporting every caller, it is unlikely that the portion that says "I believe" stops with that but might include WHAT exactly he or she believes; since it may be that a person believes some things, not other things and perhaps provisionally some things. A more subtle bad logic exists; and that is a demand for a thing that is so extremely unlikely as to be impossible, and that is for a demand for proof that is extraordinary and yet not repeated for everyone that demanded extraordinary proof for all time. That is to say, if an eternal god raises the dead, then it would be routine, and not extraordinary and thus also not proof of "god". Matt wants a demonstration that is indisputably unique and that means it cannot have been demonstrated to anyone else and it must be something he cannot do with scientific instruments. However, nothing is written about HOW resurrection takes place and whether the resurrected person is actually the one that died, and what that means; since the molecules now in my body weren't there 10 years ago for the most part; it is a continual stream of replacements and yet "I" am "I" despite that. Scientifically, then, a resurrected person probably has the same DNA, but not the same actual body because nobody alive has the same body they started with anyway. Now if I clone your DNA and insert memories, how will you know that you are you? You won't and you can't. You might have been cloned yesterday. Can you prove you were not? No, of course not. It is merely unlikely. Now the main problem with death is depolarization of the brain. Tissues can be kept alive or at least revivable for quite a long time. Resurrecting Jesus after only a day or so would be extraordinary in his day, somewhat extraordinary in modern times and would seem to require, at least for now, some means that will seem miraculous to prevent depolarization.

I recall my reaction when I was 6 and they told me the resurrection story. "Jesus died on the cross and resurrected", they said. @thomasmaughan4798 4 жыл бұрын
Past events cannot be tested. In many instances past events leave evidence or residue that CAN be tested; but it is difficult to assure that only one single cause of any particular evidence exists. Radium eventually decays to lead. But does that mean all lead was once radium? I think not. It might have been radium, it might have been a blend of lead and radium, it might have come out of some primordial supernova already lead and only lead. Biblical events generally cannot be disproven. They can certainly be judged to be extremely unlikely. How exactly would you go about proving your own existence as of five minutes ago? You cannot.
@dwightschrute8726
@dwightschrute8726 4 жыл бұрын
Thomas Maughan Those are good points, DISproving something is impossible in a lot of cases. My wording would have been better to say: the testing that we have available shows that many biblical “events” are highly unlikely to have happened based on the evidence.

Thomas Maughan Interesting post. Wouldn’t the radioactive decay (gamma radiation?) from the radium leave a signature on its immediate environment, leaving a footprint? If the footprint has been lost to time, recall science merely presents conjectures to be confirmed or refuted (Popper). Where the opportunity exists, statistical modelling can measure probability, error and the relationship between constructs. We know that if you exited the elements sufficiently their atoms would not form, here, we could reproduce the conditions of past universe. You could be a brain in a vat impregnated that five minutes ago with your belief in the Bible, by a mad scientist from a non divine realm.
@thomasmaughan4798
@thomasmaughan4798 4 жыл бұрын
@@petersinclair3997 Yes to radium decay but the distance into the past that can be measured is somewhat limited, although considerably longer than carbon-14 decay. These decay measurements are used, in part, to calibrate geology and then geology can be used to go back even farther once you have reasonable estimates of rate of sedimentation and so on. "You could be a brain in a vat impregnated that five minutes ago with your belief in the Bible, by a mad scientist from a non divine realm." Indeed, and good science allows for that remote possibility. But as there's nothing to test, essentially all scientific effort will be put into things that CAN be tested and measured. Where atheists go off science is concluding that things cannot exist if they cannot be measured. This is not a proper conclusion; the proper conclusion is no conclusion! Work with what you've got, acknowledge a small fraction of possibility for things that are ephemeral and thus not suitable for laboratory measurement, and go with what you've got.
@petersinclair3997
@petersinclair3997 4 жыл бұрын
Thomas Maughan I am unsure whether atheist scientists would be as fixed and dogmatic as you state, noting there exist qualitative and quantitative research approaches and in some disciplines, both. Building a basic mathematical model would require running constructs through rotating factor analyses to test reliability and validity. Here, one needs confidence in the constructs, especially, if extending to structural equation modelling, using, say, partial least squares. Can one achieve the aforementioned for societal constructs? Yes, if data collection is trustworthy. This would prove very difficult with ancient data, for one building a statistical model; owing, to a lack of confidence in sources. Attempts at qualitative historical research would also have same issues, with regards confidence in sources, with contemporary researcher personal biases and, also construction biases by the contemporary researcher and ancient writer. Also, the motives of the ancient writer, need to taken into account; wherein, for example, might a political aim, have led to embellishing the events around (even a historical Moses) and the Exodus? Taking a reading of history approach, to the Exodus, as best as I know, there is no mention of major Exodus events by the Egyptians nor the Ancient Greeks, who did record Egyptian history. Six hundred thousand plus people taking forty years to travel a few hundred miles, without leaving a significant archaeological record? Problematic? From the time of Sumer to OT times, from what I have read, it was more likely nomadic tribes would raid settled communities and city states, than city states expelling populations on mass. Even, if one builds a non statistical model, the Bible still is at odds with accepted historical events. Working with what is to hand from history and archeological artefacts during, say, the Axial Period through to the Fifth Century CE, the weight of evidence, suggest gods are created time and time again for political, societal and superstitious agencies. One can build a strong case for significant reasonable doubt against Zeus or Yahweh, without a p-value, I put. p.s. Research Methodology typically contains a Limitations section.

I'll paraphrase a comment I read elsewhere: Similarly, it has puzzled me as to why God would wait to resurrect Jesus when nobody was around to witness the event as it was happening. Why didn't he perform the resurrection in plain view of the multitudes, moments after the death of Jesus? Why all the mystery?

Some things are easier to do NOT dragging a body around; there is a hint of this in scripture. As to WHY no witnesses of the actual event, a purposeful god could have arranged it if that was his purpose. Clearly, it was not his purpose or more specifically it achieves his purpose to NOT have eyewitnesses of the resurrection. As to why that might be, I have some pretty solid ideas but you seem sufficiently intelligent that you could figure it out and probably be correct or nearly so. As a hint, I am going to suggest something rather un-Christian in an evangelical sort of way; what god wants is for you to choose a path through life, of your own free will, and what is wanted is for you to care for your neighbors (charity; not handout, but charity, assistance, compassion) because it is what you choose to do and not because last Saturday someone rose from the dead and its no big deal it happens every day. That is to say, the more god does something the less miraculous it becomes. Miracles convert no one, not for long. You change yourself or you don't change at all.

As with all past events, it is a case of ‘history was written by the winners’. There were numerous gospels circulating among early christian groups of radically diverse beliefs, which led to the convening of the ‘ councils ‘ to establish ‘orthodoxy ‘. After that, only those gospels that accorded with the ‘winning’ beliefs were biblically chosen. Who knows how many ‘heretical ‘ writings were destroyed, along with the christians who followed them. The fairly recent discoveries of ‘alternative ‘ gospels of for example Judas, Philip, Thomas and the Gnostics suggest other dimensions of the meaning of Jesus’s ministry

Cause even if we had direct access to supposed eye witnesses to the resurrection it's still more likely that they are either lying, been deceived or are delusional than an actual resurrection took place.
