WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

@Viktor Tandofsky "the glaring mistake of interpreting the entire bible as literal fact." Except, many if not most of the callers do think the bible is 100% true and to be taken as the literal word of god...
@TheMonk72
@TheMonk72 3 жыл бұрын
@Viktor Tandofsky "He misinterprets numerous Old Testament passages." According to who? What authority is there that can definitively state the meaning of those passages? And if such an authority exists, why so do many different Christian sects have different interpretations? I have no doubt that Matt has a different interpretations than you do, but the same is probably true of 99% of Christians. So what? The Bible isn't very clear about the meaning in any language as far as we can tell. The oldest copies we have use words that are poetic or unclear, and Christians come along and interpret those words in new and interesting ways all the time. "He makes the glaring mistake of interpreting the entire bible as literal fact." No, he doesn't. He has often stated flat out that some parts of the bible that a caller is taking literally is clearly allegorical. So either you're dishonest or misinformed. What he does is ask if the bible is not meant to be taken literally, what mechanism can we use to determine which parts are literal and which parts are not. And when he asks people about whether a specific verse was literal or figurative - something he used more frequently back in the early days - he got different answers from different people. "No minister would do that." Ignoring for the moment that there are actually ministers that do exactly that, what difference does that make? Matt is not a minister. You know what I think? I think you know all of this, you're just posturing here. You don't call in because you know that Matt would say pretty much the same, and you know that you can't actually address his objections. I believe that you don't have a good reason for your belief, and that you probably recognize as much. And if you want an example of pure, unwarranted arrogance, listen to the caller in this video. He's an arrogant child who appears to think that talking fast, being rude and disrepectful, and trying to bully Matt is going to anything. He probably lords over his peers with these tactics, and I'm going to guess he doesn't ever understand just how badly he got slapped down. He's probably proud of standing up to the bully, and will almost certainly never recognize his own disgusting behavior. Honestly, you guys might as well be telling us about your girlfriend that you can't introduce to us because she goes to a different school, or she lives in Canada or something. We're not that dumb, okay?

I've been a full-blown atheist for many years now, baptized Catholic, slowly getting my mind back, final years passing thru Episcopal phase, then Wicca, then......well, life and thirst for knowledge finally cured me of it all, even allowed me to face the fact that being full blown Caucasian did NOT make me some sort of superior human being. I still am not sure why, having been raised in the back woods of prehistoric Mississippi in the sixties, that I did not become a Klansman, and knew SOMEthing, even at around 11-12 years of age that SOMEthing just wasn't right about how "MY" people were treating black people. Nowadays at the ripe old age of 66, still stuck in Trumpland, I take it as a source of pride that I consider myself a "rational" liberal (I try to temper my left leanings with common sense), have NEVER been a racist yet understand the rational behind institutional racism as practiced by Caucasians against just about every other race of human, and have an enduring hatred of all things Republican, Facist Trumpism, or religion, ESPECIALLY fundamentalist Islam and Christianity (if you can honestly even call it that), I'm sorry, but these people are f*%$$#@ crazy, and I have NEVER been more fearful of losing our democracy to yet another Theocratic style government with NO separation of church and state. THANK you guys for showing me a better understanding of why I AM an atheist, and why I'll die one, without some stupid fear of burning in some freak show idea of an afterlife.

That doesn’t mean he cannot point out that the caller was being a total bad-faith interlocutor. At least Matt has the decency to apologise unlike the caller, who failed to listen consistently and never even admitted it.
@andrewwallwork9257
@andrewwallwork9257 3 жыл бұрын
@@humblesentiments1553 I would rather Matt had just not apologized at all. Either (a) calling them a runt was justified, and an apology isn’t necessary, or (b) calling them a runt was unjustified and a sincere apology was needed to remediate it. You can’t call it an apology if you’re functionally saying “yeah sorry for potentially being a jerk in response to you being a jerk.” I agree that the caller was a jerk, though either you’re sorry or you’re not and I’d rather Matt not be sorry than to offer a potentially disingenuous apology.

@@andrewwallwork9257 the apology was sincere, I don’t know what the fuck might have made you think it wasn’t sincere but I guess I’ve probably just hit on why you think so. So, what’s the minimum amount of time that’s acceptable between making a sincere apology and saying fuck?

@andrewwallwork9257 3 жыл бұрын
@@gurrrn1102 To answer your question, the minimum amount of time that's acceptable between making a sincere apology and saying "fuck(ing)" is when the word fuck is in a different fucking sentence -- I assume that you'd likely agree with that. At a minimum saying "I'm sorry for reacting that way due to the fact that you weren't fucking listening as you've repeatedly proved (20:42)" is really just another way of saying "I'm sorry, but you deserved it." Either you're actually sorry or you're not, and I'd rather Matt not be sorry for calling a theist a runt when they deserved it. I also legit don't know what you meant by "...but I guess I’ve probably just hit on why you think so."
@gurrrn1102
@gurrrn1102 3 жыл бұрын
@@andrewwallwork9257 we're getting somewhere here. To me "I'm sorry, but you deserved it" does count as a sincere apology, at least for covering one's own arse - at least mini-Shapiro doesn't have grounds to turn around and frame Matt as someone who resorts to petty name calling, at least on the basis of this call. I don't understand how the word fuck/fucking would be the clincher here. If the quote at 20:42 is not a sincere apology, surely "I'm sorry for reacting that way due to the fact that you weren't listening as you've repeatedly proved" is just as sincere/insincere?

That's a really good clarity for me and speaks to my own feelings I've suspected and have pondered: the Jesus of the biblical text is likely not real and has never existed, but the mythical figure were mythological accounts that cults tended to come up that appear quite common in ancient times. Jesus is an allegorical figure of ancient early Jewish-Christian mythical accounts. Really needed this. Jesus Christ is among a set of mythical figures of ancient mythical thinking like zeus or Hercules. Damn, I never realized that the synoptic texts are likely a set of mythological texts of early christian thought from the time of the Jesus Christ original times. That Christianity was a disparate set of sects that came out with their own myths competing with other myths of the period. I can finally ask this: were early christian texts and their later altered renditions just mythical stories like Jewish stories about Lilith or other myths about Loki being a son of Odin or Astarte having sex with El giving forth other gods and goddesses? I feel a massive loss but finally can reckon that early christian texts were just mythological stories that would give forth many sects. And that Christianity is just mythology we are alive to see like people of the past who worshipped mythical creatures, goddesses, big tortoises, avatars etc.

When i first started looking at videos debating religion i thought Matt and the Atheist experience were really great. Now i know that this is not the way to have productive discussions about people's worldviews. You have to understand what their current beliefs are and challenge them one at a time with respect. You can't just lambast them about the end product of their reasoning, and throwing insults and generally having a shitty attitude just makes the whole process worthless. I wholeheartedly wish Matt would think about his approach to these discussions and think about how people really form their views and the reasons that people don't accept what he is saying on face value.

George was, at some earlier stage in his life, misdiagnosed as intelligent. The problem is he believed the diagnosis. There must be thousands of kids wandering around under the misapprehension that the teacher was using the Arizona definition of "smart", not the American one. So George thinks the best way to work out which way the creek is flowing is to dangle his legs in it to see which side the weed gathers, and has to take off his boots to count past ten. A smart Arizonan is one who knows the correct order in which to do these things. Matt kept his temper wonderfully when dealing with this yappy little bugger.

Matt is right about this kid not listening, but I think one of the other hosts would have handled this better. This kid isn't going to come away from this thinking "I should have listened better" but rather "atheists angrily shut you down and yell and cuss - they're as bad as my parents/pastor/whoever tells me they are!" Is that the lesson he should take away from this? No, but a host with a little more patience would have been in a better position to handle this particular call and put this kid in a better mindset TO listen.
