I’m learning to program but my background in more musical (MA in Music Production). Are there certain paths in this industry that lend themselves more to musical folk?

Ironically, I was discouraged from studying audio programming at university because it was seen as too small/unreliable of an industry.

DSP is used everywhere, from cars to medical imaging and ultrasonics, science in general and many more areas. And speaking of music/post production: your teacher did also not know about the many companies that became global players relying on VST/AU/AAX plugin format like Waves,Native Instruments, Arturia, Izotope, FabFilter etc. , not to mention all companies like Steinberg, Emagic (now part of apple), Ableton, Celemony, Protools etc. But it's never too late to start fresh !
