When you have profits involved, there is an incentive for the system to jail people for lesser crimes and longer sentences to satisfy the demand of those with financial interests. There is also the problem that jail should rehabilitate convicts, not just punish them. But private prisons are essentially labor camps, that use convicts as very cheap labor, or even unpaid. The other problem is that often times, those private entities that are supposed to be more efficient and cost effective for the state, end up costing the state more money than the state doing it themselves, as the private sector sees the state as a cow to milk with bloated prices. Additionally, the profit/business-oriented style of private companies, let's a lot of space for poor conditions and abuse. And finally is the moral problem. The state can use legitimate violence against the citizens, according to the social contract, for the greater good and benefit of the society. That under no circumstances should be outsourced to an entity that does it for profit.

Second, they're kept in bunkroom style open 80-bunk cells with 2 toilets for the generally 100+ prisoners in each (and that's with the prison at about 1/3 designed capacity). Each prisoner has about 0.6 square meters of floor space in the cell, and they're kept in those cells 23.5 hours a day. The other half hour is "exercise" time during which they remain shackled. Third, no contact is allowed in or out of the prison. That includes no visitors, no calls, no legal council, nothing. It's intended as a form of soft execution much like the Soviet Gulags, as so far as the outside world can tell you may already be dead and they'd never know.

Putting people in jail and prison is WAY more expensive than investing in the community to ensure they are happy and feel fulfilled (which statistically leads to far less crime.) I mean every inmate in America, on average, costs the taxpayer $160,000 PER YEAR. Our prison system doesn’t work and it’s the biggest drain on taxpayer money in modern American history.

A compromise we've used in Canada before, is to have the builder invest several million in the surrounding community, repaving their streets, building parks and swimming pools, adding landscaping and trimming overgrown trees and bushes, or other improvements that the city isn't really doing. Looking at the site at google maps, it is just a stones throw away from the new York supreme courthouse and other smaller courthouses. So it makes sense to build it nearby. In 30 years time, real estate sellers will be talking about Rikers Island being "such a peaceful and idyllic place to live and to raise family in" and the prison will be nothing more than a memorial site buried in some obscure corner of the island. They could have very well slowly tear it down and rebuilt it upwards to be more space efficient, but with such close proximity with LaGuardia Airport, it's bound to be turned into a series of either luxury high rise condos or single lot mansions with private yacht docks, sorta like those man made islands in Biscayne Bay, Miami.

We in The Netherlands already had this, it was called "Bijlmerbajes" but it closed in 2016 and was demolished in 2018-2020

Well, there are some differences. It was a prison (i'm not sure we even have jails?) for about 600 inmates divided among 6 towers of about 12-14 stories high. 2 towers were allocated to psychiatric patients. They were built in the outskirts of Amsterdam, far from the center.

Big developers really do Machiavellian with real estate strategies. If that jail drives people out of the surrounding area, they'll buy it and build large. And when Rikers finally closes, the island is a substantial plot of undeveloped land in the middle of Manhattan.

Agreed .... But in this particular case, it might be worth questioning whether the location may actually be worthy of criticism. There are much less expensive plots of land in New York City, for example. Whatever happened to the old New York habit of putting everything they don't want to see on the border with NJ in Staten Island, for example? (I say this as someone who was born on the Jersey side of the border.) I can think of four big plots of land over there which would be great to hide a prison out of view.

Undeveloped land in islands that are far out from the restricted areas (like airports or highly sensitive sites) may work best. Otherwise, they would have just put the planned closure of Rikers Island on hold if they say it's becoming a priority to hold defendants in detention.

For those saying it will "Only" house 850+, this is a short term Jail with high turnover, not a long term stay prison. So you handle way more people than 850. Also can you fathom what it costs to build anything in NYC? Unfortunately no matter where it's built people will complain, I just hope that they spend the little bit extra and build it right rather than cutting corners. It costs a lot more to fix stuff than to do it right the first time.

You clearly didn't watch the whole video and you must not know the difference between jail and prison. They covered this in the video. Inmates need to go from jail to court. Transportation already costs $30 million a year, IN the city. Inmates miss court dates because the jail bus sits in NYC traffic for too long. Jails need easy access to their local courthouses in order for the trials to take place. Prisons can be built outside city limits and they are. Too many people don't know the difference between jail and prison. Building a jail for NYC outside of NYC is the absolutely idiotic idea.
