I have lived here for 30 years. It is really dramatic. Especially from across the bay: A whole new southern emphasis on the skyline as the big buildings head south of Market. That whole part of town is unrecognizable. Much of the new construction is on land that once held damaged freeway on and off ramps. Way under the transit station is the empty box for California's new higher speed rail which may be pulling into the station around 2030. If we're still using surface trains by then.

A good thing. Very tall buildings and vertical cities are proven to be more stressful for citizens. I personally live in Montpellier, France, where we don't have any skyscrapers, but i've been to Boston, and New-York. And frankly, i can tell that it is much more comfortable living in a city without such tall buildings everywhere. There is more light, less wind in the streets, more trees too. It seems that there is more space, overall. Well now i'm thinking that in the Historic center of my city there many tiny streets without much light X) but i don't know, it feels different, even though it is really tiny ( when i say tiny i mean that even a normal car is too big to use them ), it has a human scale, which doesn't make you feel as oppressed as when you are in the economical center of Manhattan for example.

Glad to see SF relaxing height restrictions. I hope this heralds a new era of new housing construction. No one with a normal income can afford to live in SF today...
@cme982 жыл бұрын
Well the reason why nobody can afford to live there is because the city doesn't plan to have that class of people to live there. Simply said, if they don't plan for you, they don't want you. Oh! But they do want all your wealthy bosses living there & cater to them, not you, isn't it obvious? Give it a moment to sink in... San Francisco (& Seattle too) are two cities which have embraced segregation ...not by race, but by wealth. Wealth is the new segregation & cities are their sanctuary. So far, other than the homeless problem, its proved very successful. Eventually everybody living in San Francisco will be wealthy or be given residence from their employer either as a maid, butler, or a manager of a big company in which your employer pays for your apartment or hotel. All other people will be transit in and transit OUT monday-friday so the wealthy don't have to be bothered by you every evening & can enjoy weekends among their own segregated kind... the wealthy. Anybody who can't see this is either stupid or can't accept the sad reality of it. You aren't wanted because of your financial status. But they still want you there to work for them, they just don't want you living there. What Real estate has done for segregation can't be ignored any longer.
@gyozakeynsianism2 жыл бұрын
@@cme98 The "segregation" you speak of comes entirely from there not being enough housing development. That's due to the politics that opposes higher density development. If you haven't noticed, activists in cities who oppose "gentrification" are exactly these. While speaking in the name of low-income people, they oppose new development and drive housing prices up.

I love the idea of villages within the building. I was looking at the scale of things, and I honestly don't know if the various areas are actually big enough for the amount of folks in each village. For instance there seemed to be far too few mugs for everyone to have a coffee. And before anyone says anything about not everyone drinking coffee... You simply don't live out here. The West Coast is literally swimming in coffee. I do think having access to the 61st floor sounds cool. The reviews haven't been unanimous - for instance the San Francisco Chronicle is fairly derogatory. Their headline was: Salesforce Tower - underwhelming despite its size. It looks nice enough, and technically it is okay. But I work in an office tower that opened in 2013 that is LEED Platinum. So your comment there was off-putting as well.

I wish San Francisco would allow more density in residential development. NIMBYs are keeping supply low and prices sky high.
@kansasthunderman16 жыл бұрын
Yeah right - Let's turn the whole city into a huge trash compactor with people living in closet sized "microapartments". That will make the place a wonderful place to live (more like exist) in. By the way, all this high density residential development is straight out "Agneda 21" which was written by China so they can impose communism on the U.S. Do a search for "Grindall61" and you will see exactly what all this high density crap is about.
@GlenCocopuffs6 жыл бұрын
kansasthunderman1 lol. Maybe you should do more research yourself. Agenda 21 is harmless, in fact the world would be a much better place if it was actually implemented. Conspiracy theories about it make those trained in urban planning like myself double over with laughter. Dense cities are more sustainable and if properly designed with strong transit and public spaces, much more liveable than sprawling low-density cities.
@kansasthunderman16 жыл бұрын
Interesting how the word "density" has become a polite way of saying more overcrowded. By the way all the increased density in San Francisco has not made the city more livable and there are more and more cars on the streets. People who want to get out (and have the money to get out) are getting out of those wonderfully dense cities. People are also voting with their pocketbook and choosing pay more to drive to the suburbs than pay more for rent. If you're trained in urban planning and believe that high density cities are sustainable, you must have bought your diploma from a mail order place. Otherwise, you must be a talking horse for the Agenda 21 establishment.
@robertpreskop44256 жыл бұрын
kansasthunderman1 well it is time to restrict the number of cars and start pressuring people to use other modes of transportation. Than these high density cities would be successful pleasant places. But until Americans get over their horrible love affair with the automobile, not much is going to change for the better in the USA.
@kansasthunderman16 жыл бұрын
High density cities will never be desirable places. They're glorified termite mounds and riddled with socio-economic and environmental problems. Furthermore, people don't want (and will not accept being pressured into using) other modes of transportation. The only solution to traffic congestion is to start building more freeways.
@ralfoide5 жыл бұрын
Very great video like so many on your channel :) Would be nice to have a counter-point speaking of all the difficulties between the Salesforce Transit Center and the Transbay Terminal. Combine with a couple other towers in SF which are either sinking or leaning... It's an interesting counterpoint to the rapid expansion and how much building one tower affects the others nearby. Although media enjoy the finger pointing drama, I think it's more interesting from a construction industry point of view to see how engineers/designers can learn from these mistakes, avoid repeating them, and retrofit buildings in place.

My feelings are that A) Many who praise this building are unaware that it actually isn't that original or groundbreaking and B) it is getting more praise because it's in San Francisco, not for it's design or anything else about it.

So the Transamerica Pyramid has a more massive concrete and steel foundation than the Salesforce tower but it's a much shorter and less topheavy building? I'm not an engineer, but could somebody explain how this makes sense from a seismic safety perspective?

It looks like they forgot to finish the top. That's not a crown, it's a crew cut. The Bay area really doesn't need more office space. Truthfully, the last thing San Francisco needed was another ginormous office tower. What it needs is housing. There are very few other places in the world with such a severe imbalance of housing to other uses. It's also a major tourist destination. It needs more hotel space. At the very least, this building should have been a mixed-use building. Instead, we got more of exactly what SF doesn't need more of. Very disappointing! It's definitely not a village, but it could have been if only the planning commission had been alert to the real needs of the community. *ABAG needs to be much more forceful in requiring communities to meet their housing needs within their own boundaries.* This building, and others like it in downtown SF could not exist if it were not for BART. Most people can't afford to live anywhere near downtown SF. Instead, they commute from Richmond, Pittsburg, Pleasanton, Dublin, Union City and Fremont, or places even further away and drive to those BART stations. Even so, the housing prices are still outrageous even so far away from the city. It's a very unpleasant lifestyle to have to devote an hour or two each day just to commuting. Some of the crazier commutes can last up to 4 hours round trip.

dlwatib well the fact of it is. It’s there 🤷🏻♂️ and that’s what San Francisco has become. There is still a lot of housing projects on the way. Treasure island, the shipyard, candlestick redevelopment, park Merced. It’s just the beginning. The Bay Area NEEDS this. It’s a sign of success. It’s good for our future generations. We can’t stay back in the Golden Days forever. It’s time the Bay Area became more recognized. Not to mention that the Bay Area is the largest metropolis in America that is underdeveloped. The Bay Area needs to spread out. It’s just to much going on in the small existing areas.

I have mixed feelings about the tower I live in the area not in San Francisco itself but about an 1:30 minutes away but I have mixed feelings about it because the city is beautiful and has a lot of beautiful history and natural beauty I don't want this all to be covered with high density towers in the future but at the same time the beauty is also being prohibited by the housing crisis because now many parts of the city have been taken over by homeless camps. San Francisco is a beautiful place I would like it to stay that way but not sure if it is possible to stay that way in the future. The tower looks ok on the outside but It sticks out like a sore thumb in many parts of the city it just brings a whole bag of mixed emotions on the city despite the tower not being a big problem itself but the future it represents being a troubling thing.

I'm sorry but we have to move on the from the fear of towers coming into SF. The city is to big and has to many people! We need skyscrapers in order to have a sustainable future in the city and surrounding areas. There is barely any room to build houses and small apartment complexes there. In the future it's just going to get worse due to the fact the majority of the world's population will be living in big cities like Sf. so we have to build vertical villages like this, because if we don't our housing crisis is just going to get more ridiculous. San Francisco also has decent building regulations in terms of design. They don't allow square roofs because they don't want SF to look like Manhattan.

The company name Salesforce is one thing, but to name a landmark building after it is quite another. Such a soulful name, always lovingly spoken. I'm sure the plaza at the tower's bottom will become the no. 1 meeting place for romance.

They’re forgetting one thing, during a major quake, that bed rock becomes Jell-O, and anything sitting on top of it does as well. San Francisco is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, but you could not pay me to live there, it’s just too risky, if you don’t believe me just look at the videos from 1986. I can’t believe they actually built a super tall skyscraper on reclaimed land, it’s a recipe for disaster, I just pray to God, that when the next big one hits, this tower doesn’t topple over, because if it does it’s going to take half the city with it. And frankly, despite all the engineering skills on earth, nothing can defeat mother nature. No matter what we build or how strong we built it, it can be destroyed within seconds during a major quake, I hope they keep remembering that.
@californiamade56084 жыл бұрын
First of all the videos are from 1989 not 1986. Ans second of all, you have no idea what you’re talking about. Salesforce Tower was built to bedrock. Therefore, it’ll be strongly supported during an earthquake even if the land around it were to liquify. Did you not watch the video? The tall buildings in SF didn’t even suffer any damage the way the apartment houses did because they are made to withstand such forces. You just let Hollywood movies get to your brain and forget about reality. No tall buildings including the Transamerica Pyramid, fell in the quake. They built the super tall tower because they knew exactly how it should be engineered in an area. You really just not know how things work. It’s the same with Chicago’s skyscrapers. They are made to withstand the winds off the lake. It’s not too risky. It’s fine. It’s called engineering.

You can see this building from just about anywhere in the city... I am an architecture student at pratt (used to live in SF) and this tower was always referred to as the Salesforce dildo by my old a+d teacher and I wholeheartedly agree

As the dominant building of the skyline, I was hoping for something more architecturally interesting than just a subtle cone effect at the top. I live in SF, and everybody I've spoken to about it is kind of 'meh'. I hope future skyline buildings are less generic.

Larry David what hideous old buildings are you referring too? I happen to think a lot of old architecture on a majority of SF’s “old buildings” are very beautiful. And resembles a the time of architecture at that moment. Of course new towers are nice as well, but kinda dull.
