Five of the Best White Sand Beaches in Jervis Bay (That Aren't Hyams Beach!)

Hyams Beach is a victim of its own success - on a sunny summer's day thousands of people descend and turn paradise into purgatory. But if it's white sand you're after, you can find it on plenty of other awesome beaches in the bay. This is my round-up of Hyams alternatives that are better than their famous cousin!

These are all excellent beaches. But Hyams beach is as good. Yes it's bussier on high season weekends but away from then it's generally NOT over busy and is awesome

There is no whitest sand in the world because you have to test every sand on every beach on earth Hyams beach sand was tested and won a competition Having said that ,the sand is very white

Hi Louisa. Hyams Beach did not win any competitions. It is not listed in the Guinness Book of Records. It was all made up by the tourism manager at Shoalhaven Council about 20 years ago to help boost tourism to the area - and the lie has been working well for the beach ever since. It is repeated all the time by lazy journalists who don't ever bother fact-checking, but it is categorically, not true.

The Armchair Adventurer Like I said it is impossible to test every beach on earth Even Florida claims the same Anyway it is very white regardless and we all should appreciate it as a beautiful white sand beach Have you heard of Shelbourne bay at Cape York Peninsula ? The sand dunes are as white as snow The problem there is that you can only access by 4WD You videos are excellent and you make a very good narrator regards Louisa

Cheers Louisa. You don't actually have to test all the beaches - just the silica ones, as those are the white ones. This was actually done by one of the Sydney universities and they found that Lucky Bay in WA had the whitest sand in Australia. That said, yes Hyams is lovely, it's just far too busy to be enjoyable most of the time. Thanks for the kind comments and I hope you enjoy forthcoming episodes :)

"Hyams Beach, NSW, DOES NOT have world's whitest sand according to the Guinness World Records." It's a claim that has been published repeatedly for decades. The Sydney Morning Herald refers to it as far back as 1987. And now, every few months, a major news publisher (including this one) or someone on social media picks up that tag and runs with it. No questions asked. The only problem is, it's not true. The tiny coastal town in New South Wales, near Jervis Bay, has become a victim of fake news and its own popularity. Home to only 100 people, the population swells into the thousands over the summer as tourists flock to this seaside village to see the "world's whitest sand" and take the perfect Instagram shot. Sure, it's white - whiter than the sand at Bondi and St Kilda. But it's not the world's whitest - Hyams Beach is not even home to Australia's whitest sand. And to further debunk the myth, the Guinness World Records doesn't even have a "world's whitest sand" category. So, where is the whitest beach? It started as an afternoon banter over beers for Noel Schoknecht, soil scientist and former chairman of the National Committee on Soil and Terrain, to find the country's whitest beach. A term of reference was then drafted and samples taken from beaches across the country. The samples had to be taken from the swash zone (the gently sloping area between the water and the dunes) and they could not be treated in any way apart from air-drying. The winning beach was Lucky Bay in Cape Le Grand National Park on Western Australia's south coast. Followed by Hellfire Bay in WA, Tallebudgera Beach in Queensland, Whitehaven Beach in Queensland, Squeaky Beach in Victoria, Boat Harbour Beach in Tasmania, Hyams Beach in New South Wales, and Bromby Island in Northern Territory.

@@robert-brydson-1 Squeaky beach in Victoria is not whiter than Hyams beach . I have been there and even Whitehaven beach isn’t whiter. They may have less impurities than Hyams beach . It is still very white and lovely to visit regardless of the false claims.

Regarding drones there - the answer is yes and no. The whole bay is in an area of restricted airspace (due to two military airfields) so you cannot fly during the week, only weekends. Also - all of Booderee National Park has a complete ban on drones, which means that pretty much the whole southern side of the bay is a no-fly zone. So you can fly in parts of it, but only under restricted times.
