Regular keys can be replicated any are used in many locks. So my house key probably works for thousands other locks. But in order to know which one I need to test them. Not feasible. However your key also has a NFC chip inside with a code that only works on your door. It can be copied but only if they actually has your key in hand pretty much. The doors and locks in Sweden are also ten times as good as the ones in USA or many other countries because we actually think its worth it. I can pick a lock in USA or eastern europe but would need special equipment in Sweden.

For your keys question, they're not really unique xD if you look closely you'll see that there's different highs and lows on the key, and thats a specific number code based on the heights. And inside the lock there's pins of different heights that match the key. They're not unique at all, but it's enough to have each key in a building different, for example if your key has 4 different pins chosen out of 6 different height levels, then you can create 6^4 different keys (e.g. 1296). Which is more than enough for even old school hotels that still use physical keys xD

There's also some locks that can be opened by the same key (called a master key) even if they all have different keys (its like a physical backdoor) Edit: i'd even say theres trillions of locks not just millions because in a single household you can have many doors each with different locks, closets, drawers, lockers etc =p

The old "standard" home locks here would have 6 pins. There would be 3 slightly different keyhole designs to go with those keys. That's already 101 million different combinations in the 3 most common lock bodies. Nowadays, most keys will have either little divots or bumps on the side. Which can be virtually anywhere-ish. It has a cool design to make production easy. This made the number of possible combinations astronomically high, though. The tolerance of the divots on my lock is about .4mm. Divide the key length by the tolerance to get the amount of different placements for those. As well as different sizes, depth,... Oh and little security pins on the side or bottom of the key which have multiple possible locations. It would take a miracle to find the same key on 2 different locks. In 4 pin tumblers it is pretty common. (Lockpicking is a fun hobby, btw)

If anyone cares, no, keys are not unique, they have various models of the same lock/key and sell them equally. The thing is you can't know which one your neighbour has. So sure enough, if you go and try to open random people's doors with your key, eventually you'll find a lock that matches your key

Replicating a key is so dumb. A locksmith has tools to open any lock and LockPickingLawyer can open a lock with any tool. I learnt it in 20 minutes in Econ class after my friend bought a kit (none of it is regulated)

Am a year late, but I am here to say keys are NOT unique. An average key lock combo you can buy at a store will have about 20k different keys. Anything over that will be repeats. Of course something like a high security lock will have a much higher number, shitty master locks a lot lower

How often do you walk around trying your key in other peoples house or car? Unless they are modern electronic keys you would be pretty surprised at just how many other houses or cars your keys actually will unlock. There are not infinite combinations. There are different profiles, but the majority of locks are cheap locks that arent actually very secure. Check out the Lock Picking Lawyer on YT.

Keys work by pushing pins in a lock. the lock can only turn if all of the pins are directly inside of it with none in either the chamber where the key goes, or the chamber above. This means that your key pushes all the pins exactly allowing the lock to turn when you turn your key.

A key (like the one of your appartment's door) is nothing more than a code of 4-6 digits going from 0 to 5. So yeah it is possible to make a copy from a picture. For your kind of key, there's in theory 6^6 different combination possible, but often the 1st pin is a 0-cut for security reasons (I don't know the details). Also some keys have pins on the side, some have a completely different look (the locks that require LpL's "lockpick bosnian bill and I made") So yeah, that's just maths.
