MORE USES (as suggested by commenters) 1) Soft Shackle Knot 2) Survival Bola (hunting) 3) Sweater / Purse Zipper 4) Can hang items off it like a backpack. 5) Making a Flail 6) Buttons for tarp setup - with extra line coming off the monkey fist for attachments

@joserivas88583 ай бұрын
One of my top 3 knots! If you simply let the monkey fist hang, you can hang something else like a backpack ONTO the fist, because the string/rope exit is offset from the center, meaning the fist-to-exit provides a nook/valley to snag onto. Even a string as small as 3/16" (between 1/8 and 1/4") will hold my backpack. I also attach to a sweater zipper and my girlfriend's purse zipper, as a decorative piece, and of course it makes for a superior stopper knot.

I carry two to three small monkey fists, of about 1 to 2 inches, to use as buttons for the tarp set up. So I don’t have to use rocks or anything sharp on the fabric. My monkey’s fists have the left over strand in a loop and/or attached to a carabiner, so once the button is set up, the carabiner or loop, dangles from above inside the tarp, like an extra attachment point for a lamp, or even more line.

Monkeys Fist Heaving Line- USCG, we used these, tied from long cotton lines, made off to the mooring line. As the ship nears the dock the monkeys fist is heaved (thrown) to the dock hand & he pulls the mooring line across the water to the dock. Weighted ones (for high winds) had to be dipped in red paint as a warning to line handlers. Held many positions over the years. Firefighter (shipboard), was one.

This is a great foundation for a simple bushcraft bola as well. Join 3 of these together (lightly weighted) and with some practice you can take down some surprisingly large game, allowing you to close quickly to a range where a simple spear can finish the job on the ensnared prey.

I managed to get it right the first time. A good tutorial makes a difference. I used a version with a small weight for throwing lines. With a small weight it´s still considered legal due to not being able to inflict real injuries. I also use it to wrap cork balls for the cup and ball routine. It gives excellent grip.

Some boat owners use a monkey’s fist as a quick visual indication if a boat is slowly talking on water (sinking) when at anchor or docked. The Monkey’s fist is lowered to just above the water, usually at the bow. If hours or days later it’s in the water, you’ve got a problem.

This knot used to be standard on the end of throwing lines during mooring manuvers. Often done around a heavy nut, bag of lead pellets or dipped in lead based paint to make it heavy and hard, good for throwing. It is banned to day, downing and even killing more than a few linesmen at the docks.
@les34493 ай бұрын
Are you serious?! We used this in the Coast Guard and Navy. We also wore hard hats. I got out of the CG in 1999, did they ban this or just the civilian dock workers?
@DinJaevel2 ай бұрын
@@les3449 I surely hope they have banned it over at your side of the pond as well. At our side there are only sand bags allowed, as far as I know. Hardhats or all nice and dandy, but there are several other places on a human body who should really not be hit by a reinforced monkey fist.

hey, I'm trying to make a tensionable soft shackle to easily lash things together tightly but also easy to remove. I can make a larks head knot pretty easily in the middle of a loop and then stick the bend/stopper knot on the other side through it to make a kind of soft shackle, but it doesn't tension. I thought about using a prussik knot in place of the lark's head, but it is very hard to keep the knot from collapsing since i can't wrap it around the other end of the loop the way you usually make a prussik. Any suggestions?

PLEASE BE MINDFUL OF YOU STATE'S/COUNTRIES LAWS I didn't hear it mentioned in the video, but just to be on the safe side, be very careful if you plan to make a Monkey's Fist knot and bring it around with you. Many US states have laws regarding the "Monkey's Fist", some going as far as making it illegal to carry on your person, which others counting it as a deadly weapon if used in an attack, or even self-defense. @TheBearEssentials2 ай бұрын
Sorry but you’re not correct here. The monkeys fist can be tied around itself, or a hard ball, or a soccer ball, or a rock. It is the knot itself, and doesn’t need to be used as a swinging weapon. If it is, it’s called a “slungshot” in that case.

Obviously laws are going to vary and any knot laws have gone full Re…d but are those laws about the knot or do they have to have some weighted fill? Meaning can you have a simple knot but if you wrapped a steel ball now you’re a bad boy who deserves to be punished by the state?
