BrazilianTVHD Pau Said that he often wrote the bass line after the rest of the tune had been worked out. Not sure if that's standard practise, not being a musician myself. He said it allowed hime to get the full range for the bas into each track.

That seems right. They had no stress of touring, and this was before rishikesh, so they hadn’t formed the cracks and arguments that they did. They were allowed to be as free, creative, and happy as they wanted.

Definitely the last bits of them working as a wholesome group. Sgt Pepper had some creative disputes, which came along with John & Paul writing their songs separately 95% of the time, but there weren't any big issues. This was probably the last group hoorah before the permanent cracks were made.

The Beatles were so eclectic everything from dancehall music to psychedelic, to arguably the first heavy metal song, to ballad...country. What's uniquely Beatles? You can imagine the Stones doing this. Lennon said it was "a good-sounding record that means nothing" Whatever...but it's a great song.

I just joined a band (I play bass) and only guitarist vaguely knew of the tune, drummer and keys didn't know it at all. Now we're working on it. Initial takes promising! It's been my top Beatles tune since it appeared on a compilation in the 70s.

The only band at this time of my life, (imo) who comes close to the perfection of the Beatles is a Russian Tribute band - Leonid and Friends. Started in 2014 doing covers of songs of Chicago, now do covers of Beatles, Steely Dan, EWF, Stevie Wonder and more. 11 members and their sound is also perfect, not a note out of place. Give them a listen, if you haven't. They are very very good!👍👏

Not Lennon’s best singing; try “Happiness is a Warm Gun”, “A Day in the Life” or “Twist and Shout” but great as always. His solo is probably his best, and I agree this could be Macca’s best bassline, Ringo perfect as always (love the drum sound change up on the chorus), killer piano riff from John in the chorus as well

John actually might’ve wanted to bring this bluesy number to compete with Paul’s bluesy one, but “Lady Madonna” was of course chosen as the single anyway. :-)

Lennon was well known for juxtaposing nonsensical terms. See his book 'In his own Write'. Excerpt: "‘I was bored on the 9th Octover 1940 when, I believe, the Nasties were still booming us led by Madalf Heatlump (Who only had one). Anyway they didn’t get me. I attended to varicous schools in Liddypol. And still didn’t pass-much to my Aunties supplies." I'm not sure it qualifies as 'genious' quality. It is goose for a loaf thus.

John barely experimented at all post Beatles while Paul helped to pioneer several genres. He proved who the real genius in the Beatles was. Without Paul, John would have went nowhere and got stuck doing skiffle music. John’s songwriting is good at the barebones level, but he had no idea what to do in the studio without Paul, George Martin, and Geoff Emerick

@@ewest14 I'm sorry, but completely disagree. Paul was & still is the love ballad songwriter & his music has always been very mainstream. John's "Norwegian Wood" was the 1st song that broke away from the traditional love songs they were writing in the early years. John was by far the deep lyrics song writer & genius of the group. Don't get me wrong, Paul is a good love song writer, but for a reason John was called the Bob Dylan of the group. Paul hasn't had anything of substance since the 1980's because the love ballad is no longer is what's popular, & John's style of music would've been way more relevant even in today's modern music. It's just a shame John left us at a very young 40 years of age since he had so much more great music to give this world, & truly believe he would've adjusted more to the music scene today than Paul.

That's the point. I can only speak from playing in a band as a bassist but when the band are all happy and they are with a killer drummer who lays it all down for the band to walk on. Steve Gadd would have that exactly the same as Ringo even without ever hearing it before - he's another freak. Never wastes a hit yet he has a 50TB larder full of them. I suppose that might upset those who are big on singling out certain players for prominence? nah, I don't get it, it's just four quarters to a pint, equal all the time.

Geoff Emerick stated very clearly that George played the lead. It stood out in his memory because he said it was one of the few times that George nailed it right away. @@carlostejada1479 The bass isn't even very audible. It could be removed and the song would basically sound the same. The bass line often just doubles the main riff or Lennon's vocal melody. I think most of the people on this thread talking about the great bass line don't even know what the bass line in this song is.

Yellow Submarine was a sound track of George Martin music. The Beatles did not own that as an album. Capital released "Bulldog" as a single as well. Read, "Lennon,1980, Ray Coleman". It is a must for all facts regarding the Beatles & urban legend that still swirls around today. Case in point ! I trust Ray was as close as one could be to the "inner circle" for there entire career & beyond.

@HEMAN is a JEDI They all received MBEs in 1965 or 1966, George was the only one who showed any actual public respect for it back then. John sent his MBE back to the Queen in the 70s with a letter that pretty much read, "Kiss my ass!", and Paul got knighted in 1997. George died before he could get anything higher than the MBE, and Ringo's recently gotten his knighthood in something like December 2018.

Even when the band was starting to come apart at the seams, this was a genuine moment of excellence as well as camaraderie and mutual understanding for what everyone wanted at the time. I LOVE HEY BULLDOG, the problem is back in the day when it was released it NEVER got much airplay on the radio, so it has become a "deep cut" that most people haven't ever heard, unless you were a die hard Beatles fan like I am. WHEN DAVE GROHL from the FOO FiGHTERS covered it on CBS' special on the 50 th anniversary of the Beatles coming to America, I WENT NUTS!!! I was up dancing. Paul, wife Nancy, Ringo and wife Barbara, Yoko and Sean Lennon were all in the front row when he sang it and the camera focused on them several times during Hey Bulldog.
