Derik's surgery was a lot worse than expected

Derik gets surgery...but the procedure was a lot bigger than we thought it would be. Also his recovery in the hospital is HILARIOUS.

There is always a good laugh when someone is waking up after surgery. Derek did not let us down. His eye rolling was top notch, to say the least. Do what the doctor said. Don't try to rush your recovery. I know you have a lot going on. The kids, moving into your home, and then the every normal routine. It's difficult, trust me, I know all about having bad knees and how important it is to do only what you are told you can do. Also don't forget, just because you don't feel any pain, it doesn't mean you can now do what ever you want. Especially NO STAIRS!! I think they must use different drug combinations in the US to the UK. I’ve had anaesthesia for surgery where I was asleep and procedures where I was awake and never had this happen to me. The anaesthesia videos seem to come out of the US.

Wow. Both knees done and out of hospital same day, that's great. Looks like waiting for the anesthesia to wear off was the hardest part (and the funniest). Speedy recovery Derik.

I had a torn minicus as well, and a torn ACL. I went 2 years before having surgery, but finally did it. Recovery is a process. My doc and physical therapy nurses said it would take a year for my knee to be at its fully-recovered, new normal. And they were correct. My mistake was trying to do too much before my knee was ready. PT and exercises really strengthened my knee and leg, which had lost muscle. It's a process, so be vigilant about making daily improvements. Sending healing and positive vibes. ✨️

I've had one knee placement for 21 years and it has been great and it's still in great condition. BUT, I'm scheduled for my other knee to be replaced due to arthritis and no more cartilage on August 28. I'm not looking forward except to the pain being gone!

@@sparrowsfriend My surgeon is doing a minimally invasive knee replacement and if all goes well I can go home the same day. Blew my mind. Tiny incision. Nerve block and twilight for anesthesia. I’m surprised Derrick didn’t have any prep. I have to shower with antibacterial soap and use that goopy stuff for 7 days. I guess she wants to keep her 1% infection rate. Hope everyone who’s having surgery has an easy recovery.

I'm glad that Derik is home to recuperate. I see he has an ice machine for his knees. Sometimes, it helps to add frozen water bottles in the machine, along with the ice and water. It keeps it colder longer. Those things are the best. I hope you continue to heal perfectly. Sarah, I'm sorry that you are going to have to be his nurse along with 2 little kids. I had to have knee surgery 9 months after I had our daughter. I ended up having to go stay at my parents' house with my husband and baby girl. It didn't have so many stairs. It's nice that you can work at home. The extra help made things so much easier. Get well soon, Derik!!

Oh my gosh, poor guy. But anesthesia does some weird stuff to me too, not to mention I also have a hard time waking up (take longer than usual). Man it’s entertaining to watch him but I feel so bad about the pain he’s enduring😢 praying it’s a smooth recovery!!

Poor Derek, he’ll never live this down. He maybe the funniest waking up patient I’ve ever seen. Prayers for speedy healing. My husband had hip replacement surgery on Wednesday and 5 bypasses on Monday. So I know where you are. Exhausted and with 2 babies, I’d pull my hair out. You have to get some rest. Anyone who volunteers to help accept their help with both the children and Derek. You must get rest to be able to do what you need to do. It’s going to be VERY STRESSFUL. Prayers for you all!

Oh dear...hate to bee...LOL the voice of "oh uh" here, but his response to the anesthesia...which is a medically induced coma, not sleep, was clinically concerning. Is this the young man with the past head and brain trauma from falling off rocks? From what I'm seeing with the eyes rolling back...could be a bit of seizure activity, were his pupils the same size, Sara? Sara, your instincts are 100% correct here when you said the eye movement was scary. He is going to need a lot of fluids and (don't laugh, I'm serious here) a lot of salmon, green vegetables, almonds...more green veggies, blueberries, etc. to help promote "good Krebbing". Yes, I talking about the Krebs cycle! (Insert awe and wonder here. The Krebs cycle is how physiology students learn about thier body as the most efficient machine on the planet.)The cycle turns food into ATP, the body's energy. (The deep leafy greens have all the B vitamins that help form the intermediates of the Krebs cycle.) He has to get all the broken down remnants of the meds he was given out of his body. The super healthy food will help do that and promote healing. One of the intermediates of Krebs is malate which can help mitigate pain. This will also help recovery. O.K nurse Sara...you're on! Derrick- marathoning may not be the best option to measure your recovery. Marathoning is associated with addicitive personality development due to the massive amounts of dopamine secretion. Dopamine is the catecholamine the mediates addictive behavious. Marathoning is a sport that originated from someone running to deliver a message...and then dropped dead. Maybe select a sport that is live giving, and less Dopamine secreting. My concern here, is that if a knee gives out during the run, and he hits his head, it is going to trigger, or worsen a bigger problem neurologically. Derrick wants to be the best husband and dad possible. Channel the drive into your family, and protect that brain! What is our faith for here on earth for if not to conquer our vices? You don't need to prove you can do a marathon to get to heaven. That's not how it works. Be free. Love each other all the way to heaven! That is the journey worth finishing! Love each other all the way to heaven! Pax.

Lol everyones usually a lil funny after a surgery. I work as a health care aide and have seen some good ones as well. A lil surprising and overwhelming as wel for the person to realize they cant use a leg. I have also been in the that position but both my feet back to back 9 weeks off one 9 weeks off the other. It was rough. But you guys are super positive and blessed you will do great in the harder times too! Dont rush the recovery. You have a whole life time ahead of you 😊 Keep your leg elevated as much as possible to help the blood flow when your down walking all day you will see a colour difference.
