Here in a city of 150 thousand+ people, I found a market that carries double yolked eggs as a product. Looks awkward on their shelf as they come in large (12" square?) paper mache egg flats wrapped with plastic saran wrap type film. No labeling, no UPS code, no nuthin. Our daughter came to visit so I pranked her by replacing our regular eggs with the double yolkers as I knew she wanted to bake something when she visited. Prank worked beautifully - first double yolker solicited an exclamation of surprise when she cracked it, but upon cracking the second egg, she soon found out that she had been pranked. Anyway, we find that these eggs really shine when used for egg salad as they make for a creamier, less runny egg salad mix.

my mom also got the XL and all twelve had double yokes. that was before she gave birth to my sister and me (twins). we have no hereditary genetics in our families, thus she even thinks it might be related to the double yokes. Is that possible?

@@blueberryangelz haha no. my dads from vietnam and they say this as well. he ate a lot of twin fruits growing up, especially bananas. everyone said he was going to have twins and here i am a twin. i think its a global phenomenon. the thinking may go “that person eats a lot of double food, theyre going to have twins...” but then doesnt, so no one cares and forgets. but if they do end of having twins “see i its true everyone!” everyone remembers as it seems theyre connected. “put 2 and 2 together”

You are so right about chickens making you laugh! About 6months ago my daughter found a chick and called me and asked if I would take it in. I had been thinking about raising 3 or 4 chickens for eggs but wasn't set up yet. But I couldn't resist. So I now have a pet Rhode Island Red hen! We have a coop in progress but I have a Guinea pig pen in the house she sleeps in at night. She has an enclosure where she spends her days in our yard. But I have to say she is in the house off and on during the day. She follows me around everywhere and she makes me and my husband laugh so hard every day! During covid it has been a bright spot in our life! This coming spring I am going to add 2 more chicks (hens) to the flock and we are so excited. I get 5 to 6 eggs a week from her. But I don't think I can NOT HAVE CHICKENS NOW! I absolutely love her. She has a fuzzy blanket and gets on the couch with me and snuggles down next to me and falls asleep! So funny!
@ultimatefoodgeek3 жыл бұрын
Congrats, Salina, you're now a bonafide chicken person! (You're either a chicken person, or you're NOT a chicken person, and you don't know until you have them.) It's best to raise multiple chicks at the same time, as they are flock animals, which you've now discovered because your Red considers you her flock, and won't want to be without you. I recommend raising at least 2-3 more, and letting her be part of raising them from the moment you get them. Introducing adult chickens to other chickens that aren't from their flock is VERY traumatic for chicken lovers. They become vicious bullies. If your Red raises the chicks from an early age, they should become part of the flock. But if you adopt or buy a mature hen or 2 from another source, there will be trouble in Paradise!

There was a grocery store near my house that carried jumbo sized eggs (usually there are only extra large) and the tray always carries around 4-6 double yolk eggs. My parents were sure that the chickens must’ve been injected with something weird so we never bought them anymore.
@ultimatefoodgeek4 жыл бұрын
No, what happens is that the double yolks (which are a normal process in young, healthy chickens) are rejected after candling, and don't go into the commercial supermarket egg cartons, so all those eggs have to go somewhere! Some vendors specifically collect the double-yolk rejects and sell them to people specifically looking for that! We have a stand at the farmer's market that sells flats of double-yolked eggs.

Hey Ben...great vid! Its true that you don't need a rooster amongst the hens for egg production?
@ultimatefoodgeek3 жыл бұрын
It's true! Think about it this way...a female human lays an egg every 28 days, whether there is sperm present to fertilize it or not. Chickens are the same. They will lay an egg whether there's a rooster around to fertilize. But those eggs cannot be incubated and hatched. (Unless, the chicken is a hermaphrodite, and it's quite well documented for a hen to lay an egg and hatch out a chick without a rooster due to hermaphroditism.)

@Ben Starr The Ultimate Food Geek...Just came across your interesting video. You suggested the world record for multiple yolks in one egg shell was 19!? My very brief Google search says the record is 9, not 19 but both sound impossible. Either way, 9 or 19, if it happened, I wonder if it killed the hen!? I note that Guinness claims the largest size chicken egg was 9 inches in diameter (!!) with 5 yolks. FYI, I am currently experiencing what I think is very very rare...I live in downtown Toronto and bought a carton of Burnbrae Farms large size eggs about a week and a half ago (not extra large or jumbo and the carton does not say organic or free run) from a fairly large, modern but small-chain grocery store called Coppa's. I noticed that 11 of the eggs looked larger than the large eggs I had been used to seeing while one is quite small (which I am leaving to last). I have now eaten (fried-and one every day or sometimes every other day) 8 of the 12 and...wait for it...starting with my first egg on Jan. 14, ALL 8 HAVE BEEN DOUBLE YOLKERS!! Starting with the second one, I have taken photos of each double yolker in the fry pan and when finished I will advise Burnbrae and Coppa's to see what they say. You can check out their website but Burnbrae appears to be a very large egg producing Canadian company headquartered here in the province of Ontario and it's origins go back to the 1800's. Before this, I have never had one double yolker despite buying grocery store eggs all my adult life (I am now age 71). I plan to wait until this incredible run of double yolkers from one carton ends and then buy some lottery tickets!

I love the looks of your chicks and I can tell you care about them. However, what do you do with them when they stop laying. I’ve thought about having a few but the idea of having to kill them breaks my heart.
@ultimatefoodgeek4 жыл бұрын
Bonnie, many folks who keep chickens as pets just consider the eggs a benefit during the middle part of the chicken's life. Otherwise, they are no different from a pet dog or parakeet. Depending on its breed, your chicken will start laying after reaching maturity, lay eggs for a few years, gradually taper off, and live another few years with maybe only laying an egg every week or two. They can still be wonderful, affectionate, happy pets during old age. As for me...I eat my chickens when their laying cycle wanes. I grew up on a farm and developed an understanding of the role of meat animals at a VERY early age. To me, it is the highest honor I can bestow on my chickens to let them fulfill their complete cycle on the food chain. It is the purpose of their existence, and they would no longer exist if it was not their purpose. But I am well aware that most city folk would not be able to understand this. The only catch is that it's VERY tough to introduce new chickens into a small backyard flock to keep the laying cycle going. Chickens are fierce and cruel to newcomers, and will often go so far as to kill them. (Research "the pecking order.") So if you keep chickens as pets, it's best to keep a single flock at a time, until all the ladies are gone, and then start a new flock...which may mean a year or two with few to no eggs.
