You could instead use Mud Blocks for the sugarcane, so when the piston breaks the block you can just have it drop onto the block and hoppers underneath will pick it up. Instead of Running Water you can also use waterlogged stairs or half slabs. That way there's no sound or memory used in animating the running water.

Ok, if you don't know what happened there 16:13, the "farmland dirt" is 1 pixel lower than normal dirt. So, the minecart has LOT of issues with hitboxes.. so when the minecart lands on a farmland seems like it doesn't detect it as "terrain to land" and try to go to the next full block 1 layer down, ignoring if it has entities on it (like a villager). This allows you to send a villager in a minecart thru a 1 block railway.. and usually we put glass so the villager doesn't suffocate, it's the same principle.

Oh man, this was great. That Terraria remix from Qumu (song name is "Terraria - Overworld Day [Remix]") is excellent! And of course, the builds were what got me curious in the first place, they were excellent as well, very inspired to try some of these designs as I'm a big fan of trying to minimize chunk loading.. Although that cactus farm would probably suck a bit of performance on old MC servers what with all the flying entities. 15:39 RIP

Sugarcane farm: Ignoring the fact that there are more compact water based designs as well, that cot less resources and produce more results, it looks decent. BUT a constantly running observer clock? O.o why? A simple smart dropper doesn't need more materials, and could fit there just as well... Slime farm: You do realise, that you less than halved the efficiency of that farm by building that house above it, right? Spawn rates depend strongly on how high the highest block is in a chunk. The lower, the better. Building above a slime farm is counterproductive. Cactus farm: Not that bad, unless you somehow turned on forced plant growth back on like it used to be in older versions, where pistons rapidly extending and retracting to blocks beside the cactus would force it to proc wether it'll grow or not, effectively making a relatively small farm produce multiple times as much as an entire chunk sized (from bedrock to build limit) cactus farm does normally. That said, noone needs that much cacti, unless they need it for composting or green dye cooking as an exp farm based on furnaces. Tree farm: A nice and simple, rather compact design. Requires either TnT duping (better option), or an excessive amount of TnT to make it work. Crop farm: meh. usable design, but I don't understand why you use hopper minecarts for collection, when it's not a wheat farm. You could have just put another villager near them, on top of a hopper, inside 2 hopper minecarts, and save blocks of height / layer on the farm. Works well for everything other than wheat, so no issues there whatsoever. Villager throw their crops to ones who don't have food once or twice a day, so that collection system is what most relatively compact potato/carrot farms use. It could also function as an automatic beetroot farm (no seeds) or as an automatic bread farm (no manual crafting required, the farmer villager does that himself when you use this type of collection system on a wheat farm. As a summary, the types of items you could collect with villagers like this: wheat / beetroot / seeds (forboth) from a wheat farm that uses a hopper minecart system. For that, also fill up their (the farmer villagers) inventory with 8-8 stacks of seeds first, so they can only pick those up, and not the wheat. Potato/Carrot/Beetroot with either type of collection system, and with the one I mentioned: Potato/Carrot/Bread/Beetroot. By adding a layer of hopper minecart based wheat/beetroot and the version I mentioned that relies on hungry villagers for the rest, you could build a tower of villager farms that get you: level 1: wheat/seeds level 2: beetroot (with seeds) level 3: bread level 4: carrot level 5: potato That's 7 types of items you can get from it, while all the floors resupply themselves for replanting. If you automatically compost the seeds anyway, since they're kinda useless, that's still 4 forms of pland based foodsources + wheat that you could turn into either bread manually, or haybales to lessen fall damage in some areas, or target blocks, etc. + by composting the seeds, obviously also some bonemeal.
