Phoebe was really the most complex character in the entire show. Very very deep. Underneath the bubbly blond was a kid that just wanted to make everyone happy.

Nah! She was a condescending bitch THROUGHOUT. Being an adult means taking responsibility for your actions and past trauma doesnt excuse you off the accountability. Phoebe's stepfather has been in jail the entire time since shortly after her mother's death (well, the woman who raised her -- her birth mother is still alive (Phoebe Abbott)) -- at this point, over 16 years. He stabbed a man in the exercise yard during an argument. He has mental issues. *He* is the one who told Phoebe that her mother killed herself. They never say it in so many words, but it's fairly obvious that Phoebe's stepfather killed her mother and manipulated and gaslighted Phoebe into believing he was (like her) a victim of the trauma of the suicide of a loved one, instead of the cause of her trauma as the murderer both of her mother and her substitute father figure (the man she believed her stepfather to be, killed by the truth of what he is).

Same. My father only does holiday or birthday stuff in the hopes that he can catch someone else forgetting and gloat. He never actually cares. If anyone else forgets, he thinks they’re a POS. If he forgets then you’re a POS for not reminding him. I don’t care if he forgets. It’s him that makes a giant thing out of it. I don’t care that much that he never had or had time for me. That’s his choice. It’s fine. It’s just galling that he then tries to hug me or talk about shared trips (that I never went on because he forgot about me but brought his current girlfriend’s kids.) as if we have this great relationship. The man is delusional.

He died when I was 19. When I was 15 he asked me to promise him if he was ever so sick and on life support that I would not let him suffer or linger. He asked me to vow I’d pull the plug. Though I could not stand by his bed and hold his hand as he died, I did fulfill the vow of a child to her father. That was the hardest promise I’ve ever kept! ❤

I'm sorry you had to go through that experience. However, you're not alone in such sadness. I had to make all the medical decisions for my dad when he got sick. Though I knew what he wanted and I tried to respect his wishes, I wasn't as strong and had to make sure that I had done absolutely everything possible before the final decision had to be made. The fear of possibly making all the wrong choices instead of considering all possible choices kept me from respecting my dad's requests longer than we both wanted, but I just had to make sure. Lisa's acting in the last two shots of her are the best I've ever seen.😢 literal embodiment of remorse, judgment, pain, regret, blame, longing for closure...A face of sorrow, but still wanting approval. She's simultaneously little girl wanting to be loved; while also being street hardened woman who won't be broken anymore in life. She looks right into his soul, while a part of her tries to hide.

@CarlottaHall no, she and her sister had several falling outs due to Joey and another guy her sister had hurt. I think the most recent falling out at this point in the show was when her sister stole her identity to become a p*rn star. After that, she kind of cut ties with her. So, obviously, she wouldn't have invited her to come.

I don't like this trope on TV shows. Deadbeat dads don't just show up out of the blue and start acting like dad's. Maybe there are some exceptions if the dad didn't know the kid existed, but that's rare.
