UPDATED VERSION HERE: • The Law & the Story of... -
What is the modern Christian’s relationship to the Old Testament law in the Bible? Which laws are we supposed to obey? Do the Ten Commandments still apply? Here's an overview of the story of God's people and their relationship to biblical law through history. It'll answer a lot of the questions you have (and maybe even some you didn't)!
Knowing the overarching story of God’s people and their relationship to the law helps us get our bearings as we dive into different passages during our Bible reading or Bible Study groups. It also helps us to identify questionable teachings, such as those coming out of the Hebrew Roots Movement (aka Torahism or return to Torah). And it sheds some light on the divergence between Judaism and Christianity in the early centuries.
If you’re a believer in God today, this is your story. This is our shared history! The faith journey that believers are living today is the continuation of this same story.

So glad I found your channel as I deal with 2 Hebrew roots guys at work (on a 4 man masonry crew). I've tried to reason with scripture but they usually resort to saying the scriptures are tainted and have been changed. I feel there is nowhere to go once someone claims the scriptures we have are not originally what was written. It has been a true headache. Thank you for producing this material brother. Much love! ✌🏼

Thanks, Jesse! As Augustine famously said, “If you believe what you like in the Gospel, and reject what you don't like, it is not the Gospel you believe, but yourself.” Those who take that position don't usually think about it this way, but they are putting themselves in a position of authority over the Scriptures. And, at that point, when it comes to theological disagreements between us, I have to choose Holy Scripture over my friend's opinions. Hope you find my videos helpful in your ongoing discussions! Blessings, Rob

Fortunately for you, they are right! (I am NOT) a member of the Hebrew Roots but a gentile believer in Yeshua HaMassiach. What we read and study nowadays is nothing but the crooked Greco-Roman catholic theology that for almost 2000 years the main stream church is been feeding us. Time to change diets! Please, read the Scriptures from the hebrew perspective, with the hebrew understanding and you will see the difference right away. Shalom 🕎

@@Pverb623 I used to work for a company where I worked alongside Orthodox Jews. One of them confessed to me that although there are over 600 Torah Laws, in reality, they only keep about half. I would think it's impossible to function in daily life while being mindful of 613 OT Laws at all times. If you break one, you break them all, according to Yahweh. And with no system for annual animal sacrifice to atone for sins, that's a no win situation. Book of Hebrews calls the Mosaic Law system the Ministry of Death & Condemnation. But the Good News is that Jesus Christ offers salvation TO SINNERS & SINNERS ONLY. Who REPENT & abide in Jesus Christ. Try reading Book of Hebrews & Galatians & Romans.

@@avasutton5408 how can you say the law is not important? When Jesus was called perfect and sinless BECAUSE he kept the Torah the way it was meant. Love. It’s all about love. The Torah is not a burden. The new testament says we must follow the commands. Everything leads back to our example. God worked six days and he rested. We are commanded to do the same. This teaching about the law… has made Christian’s not read the back of the boot and they get all doctrine from the New Testament when the new is a confirmation of the old. The law stands. Please be humble and just ask him if you or I are wrong.

@@Romans-rz8fpSo what does it mean when the Bible says we are not under the law?
@Romans-rz8fp
@Romans-rz8fp 10 күн бұрын
@@DANNYCHISENGA it means we are under grace not laws.. meaning we have grace from these laws we broke? When God commanded Peter to kill and eat? What was his response to kill and eat? He told God No! I have never eaten unclean. This is a few years after Jesus died. They kept the mosaic law. They kept the sabbath. We are saved 100% by faith. But we should also wanna do what the Bible says to do.. I’m not trying to fight at all … just open your eyes… when you read the prophets they are prophesying restoration of Israel. During the millennial reign.. we will be keeping the sabbath and festival and if the nations don’t show up for sukkot it won’t even rain on there land. Now if you didn’t know.. we will be doing sacrifices in the millennial reign.. did you know that? See the problem is we have learned the Bible from men and haven’t studied enuff to show ourselves approved. Jesus kept the sabbath and ate clean… his disciples ate clean and kept the sabbath. Pual which came a few years later. He kept the law. He kept the sabbath. Jesus said I didn’t come to abolish. We are not under law but grace. You gotta have the right foundation or the WHOLE Bible is off in view. This is a Hebrew faith.. we are grafted in… we don’t take over the promises… those are Israeli and we cling to them. And an even bigger topic is who the true Hebrews are.. cause the people living in Israeli right now… are not what Jesus looked like… 1948 man made Israeli is not the fulfillment of prophecy. They don’t dwell safely. They hate our messiah and Christian’s. They want a new messiah. They wanna build third temple. Yet all Christian’s say.. gotta support Israeli.. well that’s wrong.. how did you treat his TRUE children?

Thanks for pointing out that the relationship to the law for the people of Israel was covenantal. This is imperative to understand in respect to the promise of the new covenant, where sanctification is defined as an internal work, clearly because of God's sending of The Messiah, who is our righteousness and holiness. This is why Paul defines our relationship to the law as being entirely re-defined by the freedom found uniquely in Christ (Galatians 3:22). Keep up the good work!

Even though I am not subject to the law, I did this so I could bring to Christ those who are under the law. Paul wasn’t under the laws….as he says. This is the usual Jesus nullified the law teaching. He came and fulfilled the law in order to nullify the law. Because God made a mistake with the first law so had to make another covenant that didn’t include all those annoying bits. The problem with the first covenant was that the people were stiff necked and hard-hearted so the new covenant He is writing it on our hearts so we will want to keep his law! It’s not a new law. Jewish people are not Israel. Israel are the twelve tribes of Jacob. Ten tribes were scattered amongst the nations not destroyed. Jesus came to restore the lost sheep (lost 10 tribes) that is who the gentile believers are. They are descendants of Jacob or they are adopted into Israel. They are certainly not Jews but likewise they are Gods people. The feasts are not Jewish feasts they’re God’s feasts to be kept for all generations, not “until I made another covenant”. Again the covenant was made with Israel not just the Jews so we should keep His calendar rather than man’s calendar. The fourth commandment is keep the sabbath not Constantine’s sun worship day. Peter’s vision was not about abandoning the dietary law! It was about not calling gentiles unclean. Peter didn’t start eating bacon 😂he went to the gentile household and gave them the gospel. Paul went to the temple and paid for the sacrifices so the men could complete their Nazarene vows. He was accused of teaching against the law of Moses which he denied multiple times. Peter warns that Paul is difficult to understand and is easily misinterpreted by those who teach lawlessness. Paul didn’t teach against circumcision. He taught it is not for salvation and you should not do it until you understand the law which new gentile believers did not do. Gentiles are not to become Jews but they’re to learn to follow the Torah out of loving obedience just as messiah Yeshua (Jesus) did. That’s what he was teaching. Hebrew roots people go too far and start keeping the oral law which Jesus riled against. He condemned the ritual hand washing and sabbath walking laws turning the ritual hand washing water into wine and commanding the lame man to pick up his bed and walk in breach of the oral tradition of man. Jesus taught to not add or subtract from the law of Moses. He commanded we do what the Pharisees teach isn the synagogue when seated on the seat of Moses (the Law) but not do as the Pharisees do (oral law) Your wife is doing correctly teach your children Torah. Sunday worship, Easter and Christmas are pagan holy days. Humble yourself,seek His face, pray and repent and He will hear you, He will be your God and you will be His son and He will heal your land (relationship with your family). I bless you and your family. May you experience the blessings of keeping His commandments as a family being set-apart from the world, in Yeshua’s name amen

Hebrew Roots adherents seem to have a problem with Paul, so much so that they come close to rejecting him as an apostle and some fully do so. There is a problem there: Peter validated Paul’s ministry and instructed believers to observe Paul’s teaching. So to reject Paul is to reject Peter.

What does it clear up about Jewish law? First Christians need to understand that the laws were given to the Jews and no one else. Psalms 147:19-20 He relates His word to Jacob, His statutes and Judgments to Israel. He did not do so for any other nation, no such judgments - they know them not. Hallelujah!

Dear Mr. Solberg, Thanks so much for your beautiful analysis and summary! I do believe however, that there’s an even greater truth in clarifying our relationship to the Old Testament Law as having been completely nullified. Certainly all of the Bible is God-breathed and should be studied, but context is everything! A New Testament believer has Christ’s laws - basically to believe in Hi, and love others as He loved us, not Old Testament Law written on our hearts and minds. (Hebrews 10:16 specifically changes Jeremiah‘s “Law” to “Laws” for that purpose). Our motivation now is to bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit in our daily living, not be guided by Old Testament Law. Paul in many passages makes clear that we are not under the Law, Christ is the end of the Law, and believers are dead to the Law; as in Galatians 2:19: "For through the Law I died to the Law, so that I might live for God." We should have therefore no relationship whatsoever to something that we are dead to. Moreover, our New Testament guidance as to sin is whatever is not of faith. As Paul states in Romans 14:23: "But whoever has doubts is condemned if they eat, because their eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin." I pray that what I believe to be the greater truths of the New Testament will be edifying and truth that sets free. Thanks again for your diligent and thoughtful videos! Your brother in Christ, Jose

Thank you. So many are confused about law keeping, Jesus' fulfillment of the law, love being fulfillment of the law for believers by faith, etc. When I read (over & over) Romans, Galatians & Hebrews I finally began to understand it. Sad, because I've listened to 1000s of hours of Christian radio (because I ditched my tv in 1980) & no one can explain what should be so simple - especially Hebrews, which I feel is the "magnifying glass" that harmonizes both Old & New Testaments.

Dude! (No offense, just a lil excited!) Where have you been all my life?! I'm 44, been in church all my life, saved as a young adult, listened to hundredssss of sermons, Bible studies, classes, podcasts, bought all the books, devotionals, study and parallel bibles, actually read some of em, including the Bible of course, but it took me watching the Prince of Egypt (yrs ago) and this 27 minute, animated slide show produced by an awesome theologian btw, articulated with brevity and simplicity for me to finally understand what I never could about all this. God bless you Bro. Solberg. I have adhd and sitting to read the Word of God has truly been a struggle, and feels like a daunting event, because I get bored, distracted, restless, etc. I was totally engaged here the entire time, finally able to fit the pieces together. I thank God for leading me to this video, and for you making it! I think I will just have to get myself a children's KJV bible.... I'm getting excited all over again! Thank You Lord Jesus for Your Holy Spirit! God bless whoever is still reading this really long message 😊! Much love!!

@@rayray4192 To start your comment by telling me to grow up and stop calling the professor 'dude' insinuates that I've done it before or that I do it generally speaking in which case neither is true. I find it disheartening that with everything I said here, for reasons I won't ask you about, you intentionally chose to make a post about that one word I used in my honest and grateful appreciation for his teaching. It's also worth mentioning that too often we miss the blessings of the life changing messages because we're too focused on the title or degrees of the messenger.... It's kind of how some people condemn others for not capitalizing the Lord's names as being disrespectful, while they live utterly sinful lives with no regard for God's commandments daily.... Which would you say God will judge them on? Using proper grammer or being an obedient servant of His commands? I look forward to your thoroughly thought out answer. God bless you and much love to you no matter what! 10 commandments are not part of Mosaic law. They are eternal moral precepts given to all mankind, not just the Hebrews. They were placed inside the ark of the covenant, as opposed to all other laws placed outside the ark. That was done to make a clear distinction between the two. The 10 commandments is the moral law given to all created beings, whether angels or humans. How do we know that? All throughout the Bible, whenever there is a mention of fall of Lucifer ( angels) or Adam ( humans) there is a reference to sin. What is sin? Transgression of the law. Which one? 10 commandments.Therefore, it is critical two make demarcation between Mosaic laws ( for the Hebrews) which were nailed to the cross and 10 commandments which were not. 10 commandments define sin, and we are supposed to fulfil the law ( like Jesus), love is fulfilling of the law. To keep God's commandments is synonymous with love. Blessings

the question becomes, if the only two commands are to love God and people. how do we do that? it seems like now that every other command is gone, we are left to our own interpretation of what love is. example: it used to be Gods command that his people were not to worship him the way pagans did by making up their own feasts to him (golden calf) but now can we love God and celebrate man made feasts to God. (chrismas) It seems with only just two commands that we are leaving a lot out and a lot would be left up to people's own interpretation of what they believe love is. And what exactly would be the definition of sin now?

This is the working of the Holy Spirit. He’s there to convict the world of sin, the believer of his righteousness. If you understand your identity in Christ you are much less focused on sin and more-so focused on Christ living through you. If all a person focuses on is sin managment I think it is worth asking, have they died?

Hey, BT! The Law of Moses speaks to more than just what sin is. It also speaks to the ceremonial and national laws of ancient Israel. And the problem arises when we conflate the two. The ceremonial laws were given to Israel alone and have never been incumbent on Gentiles. It's not a sin for Gentiles to eat pork or work on Saturday, for example. The laws of right and wrong, on the other hand, apply to everyone. We know this because (a.) those moral laws existed long before Sinai, and (b.) God never judges other nations for not keeping Shabbat, or eating kosher, or observing the feasts. Israel alone is judged for that. Yet, (c.) other nations _are_ judged for moral evil. Blessings, Rob
