I agree, looks like the block gave it up first. Classic failure splitting out thru the bolt holes. Back in the day split several 12v blocks like that some from end to end. At 13:49 it is visible a lot of sand caved in in that casting also appears there maybe a metal issue at the bottom of that right hand head bolt/ You can see it looks real shiny compared to everything else. A pitty Hamilton can't put a chamfer on a hole. Everyone visible there is a sharp as machined hole, that makes a huge stress riser and a perfect place for cracks to start. Going to be some much better recast blocks coming out of Pa/Ohio I hear soon but they won't be wet blocks.

@bcbloc024 жыл бұрын
@@pddofficial One of the shops I do machine work for is looking into getting blocks cast to be a more affordable option to the deck plate motors. They likely will be 4 bolt mains with cross bolts as well to tie the entire lower structure of the block together in a girder around the plane of the crank rather than below it like a girdle does. So no girdle will be needed.

Oil gets dark quickly on race engines with larger than stock ring gaps and such, the sooty blowby on a diesel is much nastier than a gasoline engine. If we build a new 500ish or less HP engine to nearly stock specs, the oil will stay golden and clean for about 2k miles. On one of these loose big power engines, oil stays golden colored for 1 run! Now the super nasty thick oil in the picture is the result of water mixed with sooty oil, cast iron metal bits, raw fuel, etc.... it was pretty nasty!

Honestly, the 8.3 is the weak dog in the Cummins line, the 5.9 and 6.7 B-series are much stronger. The only thing an 8.3 has going for it is the bigger displacement gives it an advantage in medium duty buses and trucks with additional off-idle torque, but under boosted conditions, the 6.7 kills it!

Power Driven Diesel leads me to think it was a singular issue not an issue with the blocks overall.

Power Driven Diesel - please ask Hamilton for some good will if that’s the case 🙏
@robwalters96954 жыл бұрын
Peter Southern Boy unfortunately after Joshs rant on FB stating Hamilton is at fault and the comp blocks are junk pretty much and he’ll never buy another Hamilton product I doubt that’s even in the realm of possibility. Not to mention these are competition products that really don’t carry a warranty due to what they will be put through. As far as having to machine things that’s part of the comp game, even in the gas world things in a comp motor build require machining and custom fitting of parts. That’s why good engine builders charge so much.

R&W Diesel - speaking of the gas world, every engine builder that I know of owns sonic testing equipment and sonic testing blocks has been SOP for 40 years now.

Let me guess, injection duration at or over 40 degrees?
@pddofficial4 жыл бұрын
24* was the injection timing on that run.

Power Driven Diesel thanks for the reply. That’s not that aggressive, when you mention doing everything with fuel I made the incorrect assumption you really tweaked it. You might have the answer with the cooling jacket thickness, but I have a hard time seeing a quality fab shop making a design mistake like that. I would hope they have tested the design well beyond the power you are making.

Yea but how tired was the engine already?

What does all the water it was pushing out mean?
@pddofficial4 жыл бұрын
We hose down the intercooler between runs to help cool it off quicker/faster, especially when there isn't a huge fan out front to push air. What you were seeing is water trapped in the radiator and intercooler fins falling out as engine fan speed and vibration picked up during the start of the run.

Look like to tight a ring gap. For it to have just about pulled the wrist pin bore apart
