I have 13 baby lemon trees growing from seed ... they have a loonnnnngggg way to go - but I am very glad I stumbled upon your lemon Bonsai video's - I have enjoyed watching what you have done. Any suggestions for me as to how to achieve bonsai's with these little ones ....
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 8 жыл бұрын
+Shannon CME Hi Shannon, I would just let the trees grow until they get some woody bark on the trunk. After you get to this stage you can begin pruning the trees to get them more compact. Work on your roots every time you re pot also.

Hi I have a question. I transplanted a lemon tree , prob like 10 feet tall , like a month ago. The leaves fell down already but tree seems to be alive. Do you know how long is going to take for new leaves to grow back? I live in Northern California. Thank you :)

Thanks for posting these great videos! You’ve piqued my interest in growing bonsai. Can any citrus variety be “bonsai-ed” or only dwarf varieties? I’m hoping to take a citrus cutting and grow it as bonsai. I’ve heard dwarf varieties are grafted onto dwarf rootstock; if taking a citrus cutting, it will likely not be dwarf. I’m hoping to apply bonsai principles to keep it small

laughingc0w Non-dwarfs should grow faster; that will be better for producing a 'finished' product in your lifetime.

I like to prune and re pot mid summer. The trees have the first half of summer to gain strength and energy, then the second half of summer to recover. Winter here can be dark and the trees stay almost dormant until the days start to get longer in late winter.

In my opinion lowest branches grow from below graft point so you may want to remove them completely so they dont compromise or overpower grafted plant above graft point. Hope you get what Im trying to say :)

Learned so much just from this one video. Curious though. Can you regrow the branches you cut off? Will they root if you stick them in water or soil?
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, the Citrus trees will root easily from cuttings if they are kept warm and humid (greenhouse conditions). You can try propagating the cuttings in the small greenhouse seed trays and keep them in bright light.

Do you ever intentionally rip a branch (smaller branch) off, like down the the trunk, as if the limb was ripped off by a storm. And as it heals, it will create a seam along the trunk and give it interesting texture. Just a thought.

Thanks for another great video Nigel! Amateur question (just started out) ... will cutting a truck to a point where there won't be any branches & leaves actually continue to grow? Will new growth sprout from the cut trunk?
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 8 жыл бұрын
+Peter Willis Yes if the tree is healthy, cutting back into old wood will stimulate back budding. The tree will be fine.

My lemon tree looks like the third lemon tree, I was curious to know at what point can you give a trunk trimming to it? (The trunk of the tree is only 1/3" but super tall and leggy) Thanks for the videos! I thoroughly enjoy them :)
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 8 жыл бұрын
If the tree is growing strongly, you can cut it back to a stump and it should grow branches from what's left. Be sure to not over water the tree when it has no leaves. The soil will take longer to dry out. Summer is a good time to do this operation. You can seal the cut with a dab of white glue to stop it drying out. As with any operation in bonsai, the results are not guaranteed to work, but without trying you won't get a bonsai! Good luck.

Nigel Saunders Could I make a cutting out of the remaining plant? Does that have a good success rate if the main plant fails to grow?
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 8 жыл бұрын
Sonja Peters You can try rooting the top as a cutting, I don't think I've had any luck with them. Air layering the top off might be your best option if you want to save both.

My husband bought a tree for our anniversary. Its an indoor tree. Once we got it home the tree suffered what i assumed to be shock from the sudden freezing temperatur on its way home. The leaves fell off and fruits dropped. Its now at a point where it has started sprouting again. But one half of the "tree canopy" is dead. The branches are dry and has no moisture in them. Im not sure what to do. What can i do to grow new structure? Ps: i know nothing about trees or plants so please help i don't want it to die...
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 6 жыл бұрын
I would let the parts that are growing continue to grow so the tree gains it's health and vigor back. After the tree has recovered, the dead parts can be trimmed away. You will have to clip and grow the top to slowly get it back to the shape you desire. It may take several years.

Hi, really good video, as usual. I was wondering : how your other lemon tree bonsai is doing ?
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 8 жыл бұрын
+ExtremToxodon The other lemon tree is doing really well, I'm just letting the three new upright trunks get mature enough to do a drastic reduction to them. I think mid summer the time will be right. The trunks are starting to get woody.

I’ve often seen neglected plants at garden centres they don’t seem to know basic care of plants. Usually they are expensive as well. I think it’s all about money with them the6 don’t care about the plants.

+Nigel Saunders that's alright! I have started a few citrus seedlings from seed and I'm growing them slowly :) I'm really excited. I'm also attempting to no say a curly willow and a few other things. Your videos have really helped me a lot! Your videos have inspired me to make a temple out of concrete (I'm going to make little bricks but I'm going to make the form out of Legos.) and make bonsai pots. Hopefully i will be able to have all sorts of bonsais. I started my 1st citron seed when I was 17 so it's about a year and a half old now. I just want to try all sorts of things

@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 8 жыл бұрын
+Nik Hasangjekaj The tree must be first cut heavily to get the basic structure in order. After the first major styling, pruning gets less severe. This type of work is done before the tree is called a pre-bonsai. Most pre-bonsai trees have had a major prune some time in their life.
