The first strawberry. That is true love, right there! Enjoy! And thank you for the explanation on candle pruning. So much to learn, but my pines are very early in development so plenty of time to learn.

Douglas Firs look good... all this new growth you got on them. Looks like they started to acclimatize to Southern Ontario weather... trees are looking lush and full, nice to see this happening after a couple of hesitant years.

On your pine, do you get needle-cast fungus? I have a Pitch Pine, and my concernes are needle-cast, pine web-worms, and cut-worms. I think you had the latter on one of your trees last year? For the needle-cast, I spray Daconil fungicide in the spring, when the candles are just starting to extend. For the insects, I just keep an eye out for them and treat as-needed. I wonder if I might get that candle-borer - might have to investigate. My tree is in early development, so I'm not candle-pinching yet.

Yes to all! I watch for insects everyday and I removed the needles that were going yellow. I'm lucky, my needle cast cleared up the following year, it's usually not fatal to the tree, but very concerning!

I feel like Ive been told pinching results in smaller needles and pruning results in longer needles. Ive been studying Ryan Neil from Mirai and was under the impression this was the case. Now hearing Nigel say the opposite has got me really confused. I may be wrong in that thinking. Further investigation will be required, LOL
@JBugDavis3 жыл бұрын
So after digging in the Mirai archives for a few hours, I would have to disagree with what Nigel said about pinching vs pruning. Pinching is used in the refinement of single flush pines, along with needle reduction, to spread the energy causing smaller needles. Pruning is generally done in developing trees to force back budding and establish good "pads". Now I'm not saying Nigel is wrong, and what he said may be the case for him, but I did need to clear that up...... At least in my head lol

Insects are my biggest fear. I spray neem oil as a preventive measurement once a month. Its heart breaking seeing the trees get damaged.
