I noticed your elms on the back font on video that is coming to leaf after pruning. How will you do with the Elms to prepare them for winter, if for now they feels like in "spring" because they are coming to leaf. It will not harm the trees if the leaves are not mature yet?
@TheBonsaiZone9 жыл бұрын
+ak50gunit The leaves on the elm trees are the original leaves from summer that I didn't remove. It hasn't put out any new growth since the last video, even though we have had nice warm temperatures.If you do get new growth in fall, it usually dies back. The trees always seem to recover, producing new buds in that area in spring.

I've been growing trees for about five years but I count the zero year so if I did not say 0 then it is basically 5 years and I have a sister who grows them with me I gave away 3. 5 year old trees basically 5 but they where 3 year Olds when we gave them away now their 4 year Olds but you can say 5 anyways we had 6 but only 3 servived and we had a lot of 2 year Olds now their 3 but we had a evergreen tree and a big leaf maple now this year we only have 2. 3 year Olds witch last year of course was 2 year Olds these ones where SUPER SHORT! But one grew VERY TALL!!!! last year so out of the two ones going but the other is growing fast this year so yea ........ no bonsai's though we also have two year olds and one year olds we have TONES OF ONE Year OLDS!!! And about 700 seeds of Douglass firs, and giant seqoia's, and coast redwoods, and sugar maples, and Colorado blue spruces to we have right now 20 Norway maples it's ok no more for sure vine maple seeds next year. Oh we are also growing one fullmoon maple and two japanese red maples. One big leaf maple two bushes and a type of Madrona forgot what kind and one willow. Thanks for reading my message if you did do the whole thing and happy growing. ^_^

Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone xd I'm growing a tree farm i think at least with a lot of acres and if people want them we give rare trees for cheaper price and common ones cost more takes a lot of work but yea love it I'm planning some bonsai's later in my future.

+Robert Broswick The tree hasn't changed a whole lot, its been growing well all winter. I've done some light pruning just to keep it under control and to size. I'm hoping to find a nice pot to plant it in for spring. A larger flat oval pot. They are expensive and hard to find around here, my search continues!

What about this tree in 2019 ?!

Still alive and growing. I did loose the top part of the tree from too much heat in the greenhouse, but it has created a very interesting looking tree! You can see an update at the end of this video.... kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqaseHebbqaDfa8

Good morning Nigel thank you for your tape, but was very instructive and helpful. You said that you fertilize your trees each time you water, is that true for all varieties or just your tropicals? Thank you so much for your work, Jack
@TheBonsaiZone9 жыл бұрын
+Jack Earley Hi Jack, I fertilize all my trees with a small amount every time I water. See my reply above to Jordan, for my reason why. Thanks.
@carlostrevino49129 жыл бұрын
Thank you for showing us how you take care of your trees. A small amount of food for the tree every time you water makes a lot of sense. Iike you, I use soap and water and a tooth brush to clean the trunks. I like your watering can. where can I find one like it?
@TheBonsaiZone9 жыл бұрын
+carlos trevino The watering can is a "Haws" It's plastic, I got mine from a store called "Lee Valley", they sell gardening and wood working tools. You can order one on line also. Some day, I love to get a copper one!

The only thing I might do different would be to prune it first and then do the inspection and clean up. that would make less work :-)

Can I use soap and water for the trunk?
@TheBonsaiZone9 жыл бұрын
+Franco Pulcini Yes soap and water works fine for the trunks, don't let too much soap get into the soil, it may damage the root tips. It's best to cover your soil with plastic just to be sure.

I find it interesting that you use 20-20-20, do you carry out your technique when all your trees are actively growing? And the tropicals in winter? I would almost think that would be too much fertilizer, I use 10-10-10 and I find that my trees are quite vigorous by using it by the recommend instructions, of applying it once every one to two weeks. And once again THANK YOU for all the videos, I have learned a lot and they have been an inspiration.
@TheBonsaiZone9 жыл бұрын
+Jordan Pape I believe 20-20-20 is the same as 10-10-10, just twice as concentrated. Fertilizing once a week or once every two weeks can be less consistent than fertilizing with every watering. Say I water and fertilize on Monday, then Tuesday we have a heavy rain, all the liquid fertilizer is washed out of the soil. The tree will go without any fertilizer until the next Monday. If you divide the amount of fertilizer you normally use, by the number of days between fertilizing, you will get the right quantity to apply daily. With a very small daily application, if the rain washes out the fertilizer, it will be replaced with the next watering. A small amount of fertilizer is also easier on the root tips, with less chance of burning. I have not tested this in any scientific way, but it seems to work well for me.
@thatbronyguy3729 жыл бұрын
That is an important point about it being washed away, but on the same note you could have to much fertilizer build up in your growing substrate. And another question if you don't mind, have you ever tried using organic fertilizers, I hear there easier on the tree to use, and can cause less stress for them. And if you have have you noticed any difference between the two? Thank you for your time!
@TheBonsaiZone9 жыл бұрын
+Jordan Pape Hi Jordan, I haven't tried organic fertilizers. I haven't found any in this area. Organic fertilizers depend on micro-organism action in the soil to break down the fertilizer into a form the plant can use. If the temperature is too high or to low, this process can slow down or stop. Organic fertilizers can also attract birds and squirrels. I have found the more I look into fertilizers, the less I know! So far the simple method of adding a small amount of fertilizer to every watering has worked for me. It's kept the trees healthy and the growth to a reasonable rate. Fertilizer is like bonsai soil, everyone has a different formula. I haven't noticed any harmful build of salts in my soil, but I re pot quite often. Thanks for your great questions!
@thatbronyguy3729 жыл бұрын
Thank you, and I haven't tried them for the same reason of just not having any place too get it around here as well. Next summer I might try your method of applying fertilizer, it can rain an awful lot here, I use inorganic substrate so I'm kinda wondering if it would be better, and thank you again!

is 20 20 20 good for coniferus
@TheBonsaiZone8 жыл бұрын
+stevegot710 I use 20 20 20 on my coniferous trees, I'm not sure its the perfect thing, but I'm happy with the results for me. Fertilizer is a subject you can study and experiment with for a long time. The 20 20 20 seems to be working well, so I'll stick to it!
