Just a suggestion.... you may want to do some research on hand pollinating. Doubtful any bees or wind will be visiting the greenhouse any time soon ; ) I did some hand pollinating with corn because I had so few stalks & wanted to make sure the male & female plants got the necessary fertility (?) LOL not sure what to call it. haha At any rate, I got quite a few ears of corn from only about seven stalks, so I think that little experiment went pretty well. I got the info on YT. I love the greenhouse; wish it was parked in my back yard. I'll just have to resort to daydreams again until spring. Blessings @--->----

I can answer the seed-starting question for you. The reason they started off faster was the thin cubes of the seed trays can warm up faster thus promoting faster growth. The dirt in the larger tray stays cooler which inhibits growth. I have worked with plants for 40 years and I do a lot of education for folks at the plant industry where I work. You don't have to dig up old tomato plants in order to keep them. Just break off some of the laterals leave them about eight inches long and cut the lower leaves off and just stick them in pots of dirt. It takes about six days and they will be rooted! That way you have a fresh new plant with the tender green off the end of the plant instead of the old base plant. You can get many new starts of tomatoes like this.

After a growing season, you still look like a kid in a candy store when you’re in your greenhouse. Of course having green growing plants with snow on the ground would make anyone happy. So we got 6 inches from that same storm here in Goffstown, NH. I noticed you grow no strawberries so a trick I saw my mom do in her greenhouse with great success was she found a 6 foot section of gutter at the dump. My father screwed it to the wall and she started strawberries in it and they took off hanging down not taking up much room in the greenhouse. Just a FYI!! Happy Holidays!!

I know what you mean about the green in the middle of winter. A friend keeps a large amount of plants indoors during winter. Her long dead husband had converted a southern facing room into a solarium. It was like walking into a jungle during winter and always uplifted the spirit. A bunch of us would go over on Sat morning and spend the day with her in the jungle. Maybe adding a layer of clear plastic on the inside of your studs would help create a dead air space and help raise the temp higher.

Okay last comment....😁 the larger the seed the larger the seed tray needed to plant it in. The smaller the cells on the seed trays, the smaller the seed that goes in it. Seed tray sizes are based on the size of the roots that the product growing will produce. Vegetables that are large rooted will not last but a week or two in a small seed tray and will die before time to transplant it. There will not be enough dirt to hold the water to make it grow. I would definitely think twice before planting bulbous seeds in the seed cells. The problem is, take for instance, beets. Once beets germinate they throw down a very long Tap Root to Anchor the plant to begin the bulb of the Beet or even for radishes. By that time the Taproot has circled the seed Tray cell and has practically ruined it for planting out. I know this from personal experience as I have had it happen to me. I typically will direct seed beets and radishes and turnips. Hope this helps. Here's a free tip for you..... Put a tablespoon or two of bloodmeal about once a month on your pansies. You're welcome!!
@thebossoftheswamp4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience. At my last house, I grew everything in 72 cell trays and had amazing results. I'll find thos pictures and share them in a followup video. I was on grid then and these were started under lights. The plants were outrageous.

Greetings from PEI Boss. I know your power options are somewhat limited. Myself I use a heat matt, which speeds up germination. I have multiple trays depending on when stuff goes out. I have what is called 'Root Trainer's which have grooves down the sides and train the roots not to spiral or clump. Tomatoes and peppers are started in larger trays. My onions are started in tree plug starters, they are hard plastic and quite deep. I start my onions around Feb 5th for transplant mid to late April. The baker creek web site is selling out of many seeds quickly and was not able to get the onions I wanted. Wethersfield Reds are one of my favourites for salads. Once we hit the 10+hr daylight mark you should see some more plant growth. At ten hours nothing grows, but it's great for harvesting, and you are certainly doing that. My experiment this winter is lacto-fermenting garlic. I had 200 bulbs this year and after freezing some, I decided to put some down this way. Sun set at 4:26 here these days and it makes for a short amount of daylight. All the best

Check the root mass in your experiment of the radishes. Root mass in your foam trays should be bigger with more shorter roots. Thus more roots better chance of faster growth when transplanted. On the other hand the seeds growing in a container with more soil will grow onger but there will be less roots thus less chance of growth of the plants. My two cents on the subject.

Hi Boss, Back when you first showed us your Greenhouse I told you that it looked like Heaven to me, and it still does. There is just something about growing your own and taking care of them every step of the way that makes it taste better as well as restores all those weary dreary feelings back to refreshed and at peace. Just a huge mood booster. I miss mine so, so much! I'm not sure if there's a difference between Floating seed trays and Seed trays, but I've used trays for years. A friend convinced me to use and make my own seed blocks instead of a tray. They worked just as well or better, Plus no damage pushing the plant out of the tray. You might want to try them. When my Indeterminate growth Tomatoes become leggy and start flopping over, I cover the vine with dirt where its touching. Like Pumpkins and many others, the tomatoes will grow new roots to help feed that far end. Just like yours I've had the main root die while this newly rooted section continues to produce fruit as if it was a new plant. The only time I got better results with direct planting over trays, were plants whose main tap root is vital and cant be damaged in any way. Carrots are a good example. Corn and Sunflowers are more as they rely on the strong tap room allowing them to grow tall. I am eagerly awaiting all the goodies and surprises the Greenhouse experiments will bring! Oh, when are you planning on getting chickens?
@thebossoftheswamp4 жыл бұрын
I'll be doing a followup very soon regarding the seed trays and the chickens but yes, these trays float in a waterbed and they produce amazing roots systems.

Great advice on the seed trays, and you're 100% right on starting them in the trays yields faster growing plants. I've seen this first hand as well. From experience: Because of the short day length, the plants will grow very slow if at all. So if you have full grown plants in the beds by November, they will survive through the winter for fresh picking. However sprouts will grow pretty good and are more nutritious. Your question at 19:10. It's always been my experience that when the root growth is restricted the plant growth thrives...and vice versa, when the plant growth is restricted or plants are pruned, the root growth thrives.

Hi Boss building your greenhouse was a great idea. Wow Lori picking tomatoes on Thanksgiving you can't get any better than that.👍👍

Agreed. I wish I had started more stuff to grow through the winter but we were just too busy this fall. Regardless, It's enjoayble fussing over plants with snow on the ground ;-))

I have a pair of pink mucks, love them. I find that because of the rubber the feet sweat, this what makes the feet cold. So with that said; if you get some pure wool and just wrap it or make it like a booty, your feet will stay warm. Nice greenhouse. you'll have to get a couple of hammocks to hang out with the greens. Many Blessings

Hey boss.. You think one of those little grow lights over your tomatoes might help them get that extra bit of "sun" through the winter? That's what I would try. Lovely video. The contrast of snow and purple flowers and all the other greenery is really cool. Take good care.

My DH took the shelving in our greenhouse and put hinges on them to lift up and lock when I am planting under them in the raised beds. The best of both ideas!

Nice to see your doing so well Boss & hope you read my comment. I think I mentioned to you before but anyway. I grew this year 79 celery & 51 tomatoes in 4 eight inch pots in two sunny south windows 15 inches wide. My best year planting like that was 1100 lbs of tomatoes in Alberta. Everything else we direct sow as we found they do best from seed but we sow very thickly. Peas as example we toss maybe 10 to 15 in a 1 foot area all the way down the rows. Also the grey on tomatoes is powdery mildew. Get rid of every sign & clean with hydrogen peroxide or baking soda.

I wonder if their are some energy efficient grow lights for the shorter winter days.
