'Do You Know What I'm Saying?' was the third solo single from Transvision Vamp vocalist Wendy James, released in 1993 as the last single from her debut album, it failed to chart on the UK Top 100 Singles Chart.
Wendy James also released her debut solo album 'Now Ain't The Time For Your Tears' in 1993 to minor success, the album climbed no higher than #43 on the UK Top 100 Album Chart, which echoed it's three singles successes.
Released on MCA Records CDs and Cassettes.

Yes, some of us finally know what you are saying ...over 25 years later. This album is an unknown masterpiece.

This song is really great. The whole album has been written in three days by Elvis Costello and Cait O'Riordan) as a gift to Wendy James who ask him for advices about the continuation of her career after the split of Tranvision Vamp.

Sounds to me more like Leonard Cohen, Hallelujah. Please explain Do You Know What I'm Saying? lyrics. Ironically I don't know what she's saying, and I'm too lazy to guess (especially the last verse about him whispering about putting his hands together? - is this clapping or playing cards or something).

Her grey eyes are enigmatic. I never knew grey eyes even existed.

NME front cover in 1990 - three years later and her single didn't get into the top 100 singles chart - harsh !

@@cobell7267 1990? Superb line-ups at the Reading & Glastonbury festivals, House of love on the rise, the Mission, New order's "world in motion" topped the chart, Happy Mondays at their zenith, James, last great singles from the stone roses, Wonderstuff, Carter USM, Beautiful south, (some) acid house singles were amazing before the rot kicked in, The The, Lush, last great album from the Pogues, Public enemy at their best, the release of Sinead O'Connor superb second album - things were great in that year ! No excuse for this shit from the once mighty Transvision vamp !

Bad choice for a single. We Despise You would have been a great single. This is a boring stiff of a song.

She needs to find a real writer. This sounds too much like pink floyd. She has the talent and character to do so much more.

She found a real writer, one of the greatest songwriters in the business wrote this song and all the other tracks from this album - unfortunately the songs didn't sell.

Andrew Williamson Elvis Costello fits a niche but he is not great. This song comes across as being melancholic and repetitive. If Elvis were so talented, he could have done so much better. He held Wendy back.

lapelcelery42 She needs to have her own sound. Not sound like someone else. Too bad she didn't find someone other than costello.

You know, I'm not sure who her musical director was, or her band, but Elvis' demos for the album are up on KZbin and for the most part have very different arrangements, so I agree with your criticism, but I'd be surprised if he was responsible for this specific problem (the same goes for Cait O'Riordan who never receives the credit she deserves for co-writing the whole thing as well as a lot of his other songs with him).
