I know this video was a few years ago BUT trying to understand the opening bid of 1NT when you only had 14 HC points? I was always told DO NOT count distribution on opening and to open NT need at least 15+ HC points which this hand does not have. Appreciate feedback from anyone.

Hey there. It’s more of a modern method of upgrading really good 14 point hands. It’s less about strict high card points and more about trick taking potential. A flat 15 point hand is rarely as strong as a 14 point hand with a good quality 5 card suit.

There is something to be said for winning the first Diamond in Dummy and playing a small Club to the J to protect against a 4-0 break there...

If you lead a q from south, west nil and what you do? East know the distribution and hence play 4, with kt84. they do not take the first heart ten. Knowing you are nt hand with 2-2-3 distribution. Will you down one ?

The reason you good is when you lead heart from the table east shall play queen. Hence the second heart card is not good. You have a club issue.
