From Sauron’s point of view , putting his entire essence and his wil into the Ring was the ideal tool to reach the goal of total control over Middle Earth . He thought that, even if the Ring was taken, no one would have resisted to his evil influence and no one could have the power to claim the Ring and challenge his real master. This thought eventually resulted in Sauron’s downfall because he could never figure out that someone could want to destroy the Ring

I always imagined that the powers of the divine beings in Arda work in a Full Metal Alchemist style: equivalent exchange. And it can only be done once. Just as Da Vinci could not repeat his Mona Lisa, Sauron could not make other rings. The One Ring gave Sauron access to Morgoth's Ingredient. The evil energy disseminated by Melkor in the physical matter of Arda. In this way, Sauron could have access to natural phenomena (earthquakes, storms, diseases) and control beings contaminated by this Ingredient (Orcs, Trolls, Wargs, men).

One of the other main reasons for the creation of the One Ring is to prevent the decay of his power over time.

@@macrosense The ring allows him to have greater control over and full access to his full power. But in none of Tolkien's works more is created from less (extention from having no Creatio ex nihilo). So one cannot make greater things than the amount of whatever (soul/will/magic etc.) invested in.

Sauron's initial plan didn't involve dwarves and men. All the 16 rings were meant for elves, with the exception of The One. The dwarves and the men were plan B after the elves learned of his plan. The effect of The One needed to be strong if he were to dominate all those elves.

The idea of something like the one ring is like a double sided sword on one hand it brought him back after his first defeat but in the other hand it was a weakness as well when it got destroyed. On another note I wonder what would happen if an ent got hold of the one ring and what if made rings of power for the ents and ent wife’s

Sometimes the one ring, when you think about it, can only make sense if you apply a few things first. A couple of these things, can only happen if or when you gain control of the ring. But to get the ring is hard and is only for one person so I don’t know if these things could work or not.

What is interesting for me is that the Dwarven Rings did not work as he thought they would. Only the Rings of the Mortal Men and the One Ring worked as planned.
@katherinegraham3803

Well, originally all the rings were intended for the Elves. But once Sauron put on the One Ring and the Elves wearing the Three sensed his evil intentions, that plan was foiled. Giving the Rings to Dwarves and Men was just the back up plan Sauron came up with. Men proved to be easy to corrupt, but as Tolkien writes in the Appendices: "The Dwarves indeed proved tough and hard to tame; they ill endure the domination of others, and the thoughts of their hearts are hard to fathom, nor can they be turned to shadows." Given how much Sauron is driven by a love for order, the fact that the Elves foiled his plan and then the Dwarves didn't fall in line must have cheesed him off to no end.

Mairon pouring his own life force on the ring is something i would never do if i was a maiar .I can imagine mairon creating the ring in samath nau and pouring his own life force while saying, Nothing can go wrong; and Eru Illuvatar watching this was probably saying ;Boy you are in a heap of trouble;.

One thing I liked about Rings of Power on Amazon is that they provided a reasonable explanation as to why Sauron would do such a dumb thing - it was sheer opportunism. He decided to take a gamble. To depict it any other way makes him look just stupid.

"Sauron pouring so much essence inte his One Ring, not only made him more powerful. It also made sure that he could always reincarnate as long as the Ring existed.". Spot on. It also made him vulnerable to utter defeat if the Ring was destroyed, but he never thought that would be possible. He really was the new Dark Lord, and possibly more powerful than his old master Morgoth, at his end. The Valar retreated to Aman, and it's not even certain if they alone could have outmatched him on his home turf. That is the way it should be understood. The destruction of Numenor was at Erus hands, not the Valar. They sent guides and councilors in the form of the Istari instead.

Part of the reason he did it was simply because he couldn't fathom being defeated and in a sense the ring was also an insurance policy of sorts. If his power ever did leave him he could use the ring as an anchor to this realm and eventually return.

Something that always bothered me about the One Ring is that it sure looks like Sauron, by creating the Ring, was able to fool Eru Iluvatar himself. If you look at the parallels between Eru's destruction of Beleriand (the final overthrow of Morgoth) and the destruction of Numenor, it sure seems like had it not been for the One Ring Sauron would have joined Morgoth in the Outer Darkness as punishment for his corruption of Numenor. But instead, Sauron survived and kept being a menace to men and elves. With the sheer scale of divine destruction of Numenor (it wasn't just the elimination of the Ar-Pharazon's fleet, or a depopulation of the island) it sure seems like Eru intended to wipe Sauron out completely, but because of the Ring, he failed.

The rings didn't really work out for him. The Dwarves proved to be indominatable. The elves took theirs off and then used them to preserve strongholds and grow the resistance during his period without the ring. Finally he was utterly destroyed because he poured too much of himself into the one ring and there was nothing left of him once it was gone.

Everything comes from Sauron's nature of creation in the beginning. His desire to control the elements of order in order to maintain order is the source of his basic motivation. The rings of power are a tool for this. Whatever metaphysical substance that forms the basis of the power of the rings of power was, in order to control them, what he would do had to have a quality that was superior to them. There was only one source for this, and that was his own spiritual power. He achieved this by focusing a certain part of his spiritual power on developing his will to rule and connecting it to the material structure of the One Ring, which he constructed from the material of the Arda Marred (tainted by the will of Melkor) (this is the essence of his incarnation).

Sauron was a fool to join Morgoth and to seek domination. His "genius" was limited to intellect and magical skill, both of which were severely limited by his lack of real insight borne of his devaluation of other beings. In this respect, he was an idiot. The idiocy is proven by his ultimately making himself, an immortal being, vulnerable to destruction through the ring.

The more I think about it, the more creating the one ring does indeed seem foolish. He already had to adjust his plans giving the other rings to dwarves and men. He should’ve just focused on those races first, then his ultimate target: the elves.

So, at the risk of being petty, I think I get why Gil-Galad, Galadriel, and Cirdan got the chance to remove their Rings, instead of immediately falling under Sauron's will when he put the One on; they were the Three least touched by him, and he honestly didn't even entirely know about their existence, but what about the other sixteen? They were never meant to be doled out to Men, and Dwarves, but to ensnare other Elves, like Celebimbor himself, so why did none of these capture a single Elf? If the big three leaders are supposed to be special, even among Tolkien's most special people, then why did EVERY important Elf; the obes Sauron INTENDED to ensnare, also just get to whip theirs off, or why were they all in a box, doing nothing, after Celebimbor took the tine to craft them, with a dream in his heart? He gave out the Three, despite any of them should have panicked when he delivered them, saying "This emissary of the Valar, Annatar, and I made these incredible rings, and I want YOU to have them!", so why weren't the others already on important hands, orwhy did even THOSE nameless Elves get to buck the control? Youd think Sauron would still know the most about how these should work, and interact with the fea of Elves.

The 16 rings of power were not yet distributed when the Elves learned of Sauron's deceit and the forging of the one ring. Sauron demanded the rings be returned to him which of course the elves refused and then the city of Ost-in-Edhil (Capitol of Eriador) was attacked and destroyed by Sauron's forces. The 16 original rings were hidden in the city but were recovered and given back to Sauron. The other 3 eleven rings were given to the other eleven lords of Middle Earth (Círdan, Gil-Galad and Galadriel) before Sauron could take them back by force.

I disagree with broken sword's assertion Sauron putting most of his power into a ring was clever. If you remove so much of your power into something else, especially then taking it of all places onto a battlefield, excuse me, that's not cunning, it's dumb. Moreover, that's losing control, because so much of your power has now left you. Plus, Broken Sword makes a lot about Sauron wanting control, and i believe it says so in the Simillarion, but i don't recall anywhere in lotrs where this urge to control everything is mentioned. The Rings of P have by far the most reasonable explanation - as Halbrand, he found out what the elves and dwarves were planning and decided to take a gamble. Thanks to Rings of P, i no longer think of Sauron as Sauron the Moron.
